Reports: Eddie Murphy expecting his 10th child at age 57, second with Paige Butcher

news image

Eddie Murphy is adding to his brood, reports say.

The comedian-actor is expecting his 10th kid with his longtime girlfriend Paige Butcher, the second for the couple, People magazine and Entertainment Tonight report. USA TODAY has reached out to Murphy’s rep for comment.

Murphy, 57, and Butcher, 39, began dating in 2012. Their daughter, Izzy Oona Murphy, turned two in May.

The new baby is set to arrive in December, according to the outlets, and will be welcomed by several siblings.

Murphy has five children with his ex-wife, Nicole Murphy: Bria: 28, Miles Mitchell: 25, Shayne Audra: 23,  Zola Ivy: 18, and Bella Zahra: 16. The former pair were wed in 1993 and divorced in 2006.

Murphy is also the father to 29-year-old son, Eric, whose mother is Paulette McNeely;  27-year-old Christian, whose mother is Tamara Hood; and 11-year-old Angel Iris Murphy Brown, whose mother is former Spice Girl and current “America’s Got Talent” judge Mel B.

Shayne Audra tagged some of her siblings in a photo shared to Instagram last Christmas.

How to watch Netflix together online without being in the same room

news image

Image: JONATHAN NACKSTRAND/AFP/Getty Images

Just because you and your friends have moved to different corners of the globe doesn’t mean you have to stop watching shows and movies together.

Trying to all hit play at the same moment — as well as juggling between Netflix and Skype, a Facebook chat, Slack, Discord, or any other online chat program — isn’t exactly the most convenient thing in the world. Luckily, there is another way.

There are several great apps, extensions and websites with the goal of syncing up Netflix streams across the Internet, but they all have their ups and downs. Some are exclusive to Chrome, some have top-notch chat features and some don’t go full screen.

Here are the pros and cons of the best ways to watch Netflix with your friends online.

1. Netflix Party

Netflix Party is a Google Chrome-exclusive extension that only requires one person to install it, making it the easiest of the three to set up.

Once you install it, choose a movie or show, pause it, and then click the red “NP” button at the top right of your browser to get a link to a shared session. The extension allows you to chat with everyone in the viewing session, but doesn’t allow you to put in a name, so you’ll have to remember your friends’ random symbols.

Netflix Party allows for full-screen viewing and anybody in the session can hit pause, play or scrub through the timeline. The stream adjusts seamlessly.

The biggest downside to Netflix Party is that if you want to watch a few episodes of something or another movie, you’ll have to create a new session every time. Even if Netflix autoplays to the next episode, it will kick everyone out of the session and you’ll have to send out a new link to everyone.

2. Rabbit

Rabbit is one of the most well-rounded stream-sharing services available, partially because it can be used with any browser and partially because you can share all your favorite streaming services including Netflix, Hulu, Crackle and more.

Rabbit requires you to have an account and add the people you want to share a stream with as your friends. It works by having one person in control of the stream, which is shared via a proxy browser right on the Rabbit website. This means you’re essentially sharing the view of a full browser with everyone in your party, and you can go anywhere on the web that you like.

While this is a great feature, it doesn’t give the best stream quality. Even when watching something in a Rabbit room alone, the Netflix stream is pretty pixelated. It also cannot be put in full-screen mode or resized, relegating your viewing area to a small portion of your actual screen. If you’re watching on a laptop or tablet that’s 13 inches or less, good luck seeing much of what’s happening.

The shared stream in Rabbit takes up less than half the screen space.

The shared stream in Rabbit takes up less than half the screen space.

The chat options on Rabbit are great, though. The chat window on the right shows everyone’s username and picture, and you can even do voice and video chat.

These services have their upsides and downsides but they are the best Netflix-sharing services available, at least for now. Happy viewing with your friends.

Russia to hold biggest war games since Cold War

news image

Russia will hold its biggest war games in nearly four decades next month, a massive military exercise that will also involve the Chinese and Mongolian armies.

The September 11-15 manoeuvres will involve almost 300,000 troops, more than 1,000 military aircraft, two of Russia’s naval fleets, and all its airborne units, Russia’s Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said in a statement on Tuesday.

Shoigu said the drills “are on an unprecedented scale both in terms of the area covered and in terms of the numbers” of military forces.

“Imagine 36,000 pieces of military equipment moving together at the same time — tanks, armoured personnel carriers, infantry fighting vehicles. And all of this, of course, in conditions as close to combat as possible,” he said.

The exercises in central and eastern Russia, dubbed Vostok-2018, will take place at a time of heightened tensions between the West and Russia, which is concerned about what it says is an unjustified build-up of the NATO alliance on its western flank.

NATO says it has beefed up its forces in eastern Europe to deter potential Russian military action after Moscow annexed Ukraine’s Crimea in 2014 and backed a pro-Russian uprising in eastern Ukraine.

The war games are also likely to displease Japan, which has complained about what it says is a Russian military build-up in the Asia-Pacific.

China’s state Xinhua news agency has reported Beijing plans to send 3,200 troops and about 900 weapons units for the exercises.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will attend a forum in Vladivostok over the same period. A foreign ministry official said on Tuesday that Tokyo always pays attention to shifts in Russian-Chinese military cooperation.

When asked if the cost of holding such a massive military exercise was justified at a time when Russia is faced with higher social spending demands, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said such war games were essential.

“The country’s ability to defend itself in the current international situation, which is often aggressive and unfriendly towards our country, means [it] is justified,” Peskov told reporters on a conference call.

‘More assertive Russia’

When asked if China’s involvement meant Moscow and Beijing were moving towards an alliance, Peskov said it showed the two were cooperating in all areas. China and Russia have taken part in joint military drills before, but not on such a large scale.

NATO spokesman Dylan White said Russia had briefed the alliance on the planned exercise in May and NATO planned to monitor it.

Russia invited military attaches from NATO countries based in Moscow to observe the war games, an offer he said was under consideration.

“All nations have the right to exercise their armed forces, but it is essential that this is done in a transparent and predictable manner,” White said.

“Vostok demonstrates Russia’s focus on exercising large-scale conflict. It fits into a pattern we have seen over some time: a more assertive Russia, significantly increasing its defence budget and its military presence.”

Sexually-transmitted diseases surge for the 4th straight year, CDC reports

news image

Federal health officials said Tuesday that new cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis spiked nearly 10 percent in 2017, continuing a four-year trend of rising sexually-transmitted diseases fueled by lack of awareness and changing sexual behavior.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that 2.29 million new cases of these three common yet treatable sexually-transmitted diseases were diagnosed in 2017.

The number of new STD cases have continued a “steep, sustained increase” since 2013, CDC reported. The rise in cases — now at record levels — comes as the federal budget has not increased STD program funding since 2013, leaving local health departments scrambling to address the problem with fewer resources.

“There is a shocking increase in STDs in America,” said David Harvey, executive director of the National Coalition of STD Directors. “We think there is a direct correlation between the increase in the number of STDs,” and the lack of federal funding increases.

From 2016 to 2017, cases of primary and secondary syphilis grew more than 10 percent, chlamydia increased nearly 7 percent and gonorrhea surged nearly 19 percent, according to preliminary CDC figures released Tuesday.

Left untreated, these infections can result in infertility, pregnancy complications or increase the risk of HIV transmission.

Federal health officials are particularly troubled by the 67 percent jump in gonorrhea cases since 2013 because the bacterial infection has become resistant to all antibiotics except ceftriaxone.

Public health officials in England this year reported a man contracted gonorrhea that resisted the commonly prescribed drug combination of ceftriaxone and azithromycin.

Public health officials expect that super-resistant strain will emerge in the U.S.

“We will have drug resistant gonorrhea in the United States,” Harvey said. “It’s going to happen. It is not a question of if but when.”

Since 2015, the CDC has recommended a single shot of ceftriaxone be combined with an oral dose of azithromycin to treat people with gonorrhea.

Although this two-drug combination has not yet failed in the U.S., the CDC said that lab testing confirms that resistance to azithromycin has increased from 1 percent of cases is 2013 to more than 4 percent in 2017. Azithromycin has been used to stall resistance to ceftriaxone.

Experts said many factors have led to the increase in STDs, including a lack of awareness about the seriousness of infection and changing sexual behavior. Medical technology such as pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, a daily medication used to reduce the risk of HIV transmission, have prompted some to no longer use condoms.

Young adults may not fear HIV transmission as the once-deadly virus has become more of a chronic condition that can be managed with medication. Some appear more willing to engage in risky, unprotected sex, which has led to the spread of preventable STDs, officials said.

“We are sliding backward,” Jonathan Mermin, director of CDC’s National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention, said in a statement. “It is evident the systems that identify, treat, and ultimately prevent STDs are strained to near-breaking point.”

Man Utd: Jose Mourinho has club’s backing despite defeat by Tottenham

news image

‘Respect! Respect! Respect!’ – Mourinho walks out of news conference

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho still has the club’s backing despite Monday’s 3-0 home defeat by Tottenham.

United have lost two of their first three Premier League games for the first time since 1992-93.

However, senior figures at Old Trafford are convinced Mourinho can turn the situation around.

Mourinho, 55, remained on the pitch to applaud fans after the game at Old Trafford and praised them in TV interviews.

Asked about United’s defensive problems in the post-match news conference, he raised three fingers and said: “Do you know what this means? Yes, it means 3-0, but it also means three Premier Leagues – and I won more Premier Leagues alone than the other 19 managers put together. Three for me. Two for them.”

As he got up to leave, Mourinho told a journalist: “Respect! Respect! Respect man!”

The Portuguese last week said had “no problem” with United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, amid reports that they have fallen out.

Mourinho took over at United in 2016, winning the League Cup and the Europa League in his first season in charge, when they finished sixth in the Premier League.

United were runners-up to Manchester City last season.

He has won the Premier League three times with Chelsea and claimed two titles in Portugal, two in Italy and one in Spain as well as winning the Champions League twice.

Trump aide says president weighing regulations on Google search engine that he considers ‘rigged’

news image

WASHINGTON – White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said Tuesday that President Donald Trump is considering new regulations on Google’s search engine to address his concern that it turns up too many stories that are critical of him.

Pressed by reporters at the White House on Tuesday about a tweet the president wrote criticizing Google’s search engine as “rigged,” the director of Trump’s National Economic Council said the administration is “taking a look” at federal regulations for the company.

“We’ll let you know,” he said.

Earlier, Trump expressed frustration on Twitter that when Americans type  “Trump News” into the search engine, it generates mostly negative news about him while conservative media is “shut out.”

Google said in a statement that its search engine is not designed with the intent of promoting a political ideology but is instead aimed at generating “high-quality content” in response to user queries.

“When users type queries into the Google Search bar, our goal is to make sure they receive the most relevant answers in a matter of seconds,” said Riva Sciuto, a Google spokesperson.

“Search is not used to set a political agenda and we don’t bias our results toward any political ideology,” Sciuto said. “We continually work to improve Google Search and we never rank search results to manipulate political sentiment.”

Trump and Kudlow raised the prospect of regulating the company days before executives from Facebook, Twitter and Google are set to answer questions on Capitol Hill. US rejects UN court jurisdiction over Iran sanctions case

news image

The United States told the UN’s top court it has no jurisdiction to rule on Iran’s demand for the suspension of nuclear-related sanctions recently reimposed on the country.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague “lacks prima facie jurisdiction to hear Iran’s claims”, US State Department lawyer Jennifer Newstead argued on Tuesday.

During the first hearing of the case on Monday, Iran argued US President Donald Trump breached a 1955 treaty with his decision to reimpose sanctions after withdrawing from the landmark 2015 nuclear deal with world powers.

Iran unemployment crisis, rising living costs bite amid sanctions

Newstead said the United States has the right to protect its national security and other interests.

She said the treaty “cannot therefore provide a basis for this court’s jurisdiction” in the case.

Sanctions on Iran were lifted under the 2015 accord with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany. In return, Tehran committed not to develop nuclear weapons.

However, Trump said the deal did not do enough to curb the alleged threat from Iran. He pulled the US out of the accord in May and began reimposing sanctions earlier this month.

“This case is entirely about an attempt to compel the US by order of this court to resume” the 2015 nuclear deal, Newstead said.

On Monday, Iran’s lawyers said the sanctions were threatening the welfare of its citizens and disrupting tens of billions of dollars worth of business deals.

Lawyer Jennifer Newstead, right, looks at Iran’s representative Mohsen Mohebi on Tuesday [AFP]

The Islamic Republic’s lead representative in the case, Mohsen Mohebi, branded the sanctions “naked economic aggression”.

“The United States is publicly propagating a policy intended to damage as severely as possible Iran’s economy and Iranian nationals and companies,” Mohebi said.

“Iran will put up the strongest resistance to the US economic strangulation by all peaceful means.”

But the US lawyers held Iran to blame for its economic woes.

US-Iran sanctions: Economic uncertainty hits hard

They have “deep roots in the Iranian government’s mismanagement of its own economy and repression of its own population”, Newstead said.

The court in the Netherlands adjourned until Wednesday when Iran will have the opportunity to respond to the US’ arguments.

The ICJ is expected to take several weeks to decide whether to grant Tehran’s request. A final decision could take years.

Its judgements are binding, final and without appeal, however, it has no power to enforce its decisions.

However, whether any decision will be implemented remains unclear. Both Iran and the US in the past have ignored the UN court’s rulings against them.

Despite the 1955 Treaty of Amity and Economic Relations, the two countries have not had diplomatic ties since 1980.

US Open 2018: Johanna Konta, Roger Federer & Novak Djokovic open campaigns on day two

news image

Johanna Konta went into the 2017 US Open with an outside chance of becoming world number one
2018 US Open

Johanna Konta says she has learned from her experience of “burning out” as she begins her challenge at the US Open against Caroline Garcia on Tuesday.

The British number one, 27, suffered a dip in form after her run to the Wimbledon semi-finals last year.

Konta, ranked 46th in the world, plays French sixth seed Garcia, third on Grandstand Court from about 20:00 BST.

Five-time champion Roger Federer and two-time winner Novak Djokovic also open their campaigns on day two.

Can Federer end a 10-year drought?

Roger Federer won the men’s US Open singles titles on five successive occasions from 2004

Swiss great Federer, 37, is tied with Americans Pete Sampras and Jimmy Connors as a five-time winner of the US Open men’s title, but last won the trophy at Flushing Meadows in 2008.

The 20-time Grand Slam singles champion faces first-round challenger Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan in the first match of the night session on Arthur Ashe Stadium from 00:00 BST.

“I won the US Open five times so I stand here pretty happy, to be quite honest,” the number two seed said.

“It’s not like, gosh, the US Open never worked out for me. It hasn’t the last couple years, but it’s all good.”

Wimbledon champion Djokovic, victorious at Flushing Meadows in 2011 and 2015, faces Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics in the second match of the day session on Arthur Ashe.

The 31-year-old Serb, seeded sixth, has enjoyed a renaissance over the past few months after a loss of form and injury saw him drop to world number 22 earlier this year.

He defeated Federer in the final of the recent tournament in Cincinnati and both men are drawn to meet in the last eight.

Elsewhere, Australian Open champion and second seed Caroline Wozniacki begins her bid for the women’s title against Australia’s 2011 champion Sam Stosur in the first match on Arthur Ashe at 16:00.

Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber, fourth seed in New York, faces Russia’s Margarita Gasparyan in the second match on Louis Armstrong Stadium before fellow German Alexander Zverev, the men’s fourth seed, takes on Canada’s Peter Polansky.

In the Louis Armstrong night session, Australia’s Nick Kyrgios faces Moldovan Radu Albot while 2006 champion Maria Sharapova plays Swiss Patty Schnyder.

‘I’m in a better mental space’

Konta was ranked seventh going into last year’s US Open and had an outside chance of becoming the world number one.

However, she suffered a surprise first-round defeat by unseeded Serb Aleksandra Krunic – the second of five straight losses at the end of 2017.

That came after a fantastic start to the year – during which she had won WTA titles in Sydney and Miami before reaching the last four at Wimbledon.

“I’m in a better mental and emotional space,” she told BBC Sport.

“That sticky period at the end of last year was a good opportunity for a lot of self-discovery.

“I feel I definitely understood myself more and what is important to me and what areas of my work and life I need to take care of.

“I’d also like to think it has made me wiser – and if I’m ever approaching that situation again of feeling burned out then I could recognise it sooner and be able to act in an appropriate way.”

Konta arrived in New York on the back of some impressive victories against former Grand Slam champions Serena Williams, Jelena Ostapenko and Victoria Azarenka.

However, she is still recovering from a virus that forced her to pull out of the Connecticut Open last week.
