CBS News faces the wrath of Twitter for misleading Beto O’Rourke tweet

If you bothered to log onto your Twitter account at least once this week, you almost definitely saw the viral video of Democratic Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke responding thoughtfully to a question about whether he finds it disrespectful when NFL players kneel during the national anthem. The clip drew wide praise, including from LeBron James, Ellen DeGeneres, and Janelle Monáe

But a CBS News story on the exchange created viral outrage by reducing the nuance and insight of O’Rourke’s response to a terribly misleading headline and tweet.

This is what O’Rourke said: “I can think of nothing more American than to peacefully stand up, or take a knee, for your rights, anytime, anywhere, in any place.” (The full clip is below.)

This is how CBS News translated those words: “Beto O’Rourke says there’s ‘nothing more American’ than NFL players protesting the national anthem.”

In case anyone needs a refresher, NFL players who choose to kneel are not protesting the national anthem but racial inequality and police brutality.

Journalists, advocates, activists, and even Mark Cuban called foul on CBS News for essentially adopting the same false language Fox News and O’Rourke’s opponent, Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, used to describe O’Rourke’s answer.

The story’s headline has since been corrected, and the piece now includes an editor’s note that accurately states why NFL players kneel during the national anthem. Yet a tweet with the original language has not been deleted from CBS News’ Twitter account as of Saturday evening, even though it had a like/comment ratio of 4,800 to 11,000 by Saturday afternoon (which definitely isn’t good). It might not be long before the news outlet does the right thing and retracts the tweet as well.

In the meantime, here are O’Rourke’s comments for your own listening pleasure:

Mesut Ozil: Arsenal boss Unai Emery denies midfielder missed West Ham win due to row

news image

First win very important for Arsenal – Emery

Arsenal head coach Unai Emery has denied Mesut Ozil missed Saturday’s victory over West Ham because of a row in training.

The Spaniard said Ozil, 29, was not in the squad for the 3-1 Premier League win at Emirates Stadium due to illness.

ESPN Brazil reported the midfielder had an argument with Emery on Friday and refused to be in the squad after finding out he was on the bench.

“Why is this information out there? It isn’t true,” said Emery.

“He left training because he was going to his home because he is sick.”

Emery told Match of the Day that he sat down with German Ozil and the team doctor on Friday and decided he would not play.

He said he told Ozil to attend the match if he was feeling better and that the German was “with the team” before the game but later left due to his illness.

“He is bad with sickness. There is no problem with the player, speak with the doctor he can explain better,” Emery added.

Issa Diop’s own goal and Danny Welbeck’s late strike helped an unconvincing Arsenal secure their first victory under Emery since the former Sevilla and Paris St-Germain boss replaced Arsene Wenger in May.

Ozil, who started the defeats by Manchester City and Chelsea, quit international football after Germany exited the World Cup in the group stages, citing “racism and disrespect”.

Homeless again, man fears he’ll never get most of the $400k from a GoFundMe in his honor

news image

When Kate McClure’s car ran out of gas on an interstate, Johnny Bobbitt Jr. came to her rescue in an unexpected way. Now she’s surprising him with something even bigger.
USA TODAY

A GoFundMe campaign was supposed to be a “second chance at life” for Johnny Bobbitt Jr. after the homeless man’s kindness to a stranger went viral in November 2017. Now, Bobbitt says he’s on the streets again and thinks the more than $400,000 raised was mismanaged.

Bobbitt gained fame after giving his last $20 to a woman who ran out of gas in Philadelphia. That woman, Kate McClure, worked with boyfriend Mark D’Amico to set up a crowdfunding campaign that attracted 14,000 donors.

But now Bobbitt says he’s homeless, hungry and addicted to drugs again. His lawyers say the couple has given him a fraction of the money, CNN reports. And Bobbitt fears he won’t benefit from the rest, according to an interview published by The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Bobbitt’s lawyer estimated there should be $300,000 left from the campaign, according to CNN. Chris Fallon said he and another lawyer are working to secure a guardian other than McClure and D’Amico for the balance of the money.

The relationship between Bobbitt and the couple has deteriorated in the past year, the Inquirer reports.

The GoFundMe promised the possibility of Bobbitt owning a home. Instead, the couple made arrangements for him to live in a camper on family property, the publication reports.

Bobbitt told the paper that the couple may have spent some of the money from the GoFundMe on expensive cars and gambling.

McClure and D’Amico tell a different story, saying they are withholding a portion of the money for Bobbitt’s own good. They say his problems with drugs have contributed to him wasting some of the money from the campaign that he was given.

“Giving him all that money, it’s never going to happen. I’ll burn it in front of him,” D’Amico told the paper. He indicated the money could be as dangerous to Bobbitt as “a loaded gun.”

GoFundMe issued a statement to CNN and the Inquirer saying they are looking into the dispute.

Results from Logan Paul vs. KSI and Jake Paul vs. Deji boxing match

news image

Apparently, the new way to settle YouTube beefs is to punch each other in the face and make a whole bunch of money off it.

After months of hype, shit talking, and petty drama, YouTube has made its final descent into the gutter. Disgraced vlogger Logan Paul faced off against fellow YouTuber Olajide “KSI” Olatunji for a sold out boxing match in Manchester, UK on Saturday, while their respective brothers, Jake Paul and Oladeji “Deji” Olatunji, traded blows in an undercard.

We know why you’re here. Please enjoy this GIF of Logan getting punched in the face.

Sadly, we aren’t allowed to share more GIFs or videos because the whole event, preceded by numerous monetized YouTube videos including some truly awful diss tracks, was only available on YouTube pay-per-view for $10 a pop

We can tell you, however, that Jake won in his fight against Deji and Logan’s fight against KSI ended with a majority draw.

Jake vs. Deji

Jake, who entered the ring with a plastic muzzle and “Fuck Jake Paul” bling around his neck reeked of confidence, which comes as no surprise from the cocky YouTuber.

Image: Scfreenshot/YouTube

Deji, on the other hand, bumbled his way to the ropes with his face covered.

Image: screenshot/YouTube

By the end of round one, Jake’s face was bloodied from a blow to the face. Deji’s white gloves were stained red.

Image: screenshot/YouTube

Jake maintained a slight upper hand on Deji through the fourth round, though Deji managed to hold him off well. But at the end of round five Jake rocked Deji with a series of punches, enough for the latter’s team to throw in the towel and forfeit the match before the final sixth round.

Image: screenshot/YouTube

“Deji fought an amazing fight,” Jake said afterward. “I respect him. I hope he learned a lesson about the things that he said, ’cause he said some shit about my family that wasn’t cool … but much respect to Deji, no hard feelings.”

Jake then used the opportunity to announce the launch of his new clothing line. He plugged the website, the crowd booed.

Logan vs. KSI

Logan was calm and focused on his walk out to the ring after legendary boxing announcer Michael Buffer called his name for the main event of the evening.

Image: screenshot/YouTube

KSI chose an intimidating black skeleton mask as he  milked his slow walk to the stage.

Image: screenshot/YouTube

Logan boasted in the first round, laughing at KSI, often taunting him with his hands down and his face unprotected. He managed to take the round with a series of punches at the end.

In round two, KSI was visibly angry and took wild swings but was unable to land many substantial hits. KSI threw a cheap shot at Logan after the bell, and Jake briefly entered the ring. Regardless, Logan took the second round, too.

KSI managed to land a few big punches in round three, and clearly took the round. Logan seemed to tire a bit, and continued to look sluggish in round four while KSI ramped up his energy. Both of the YouTubers swung wildly, and failed to show any strong defense.

Logan seemed to amp up his energy at the start of round five, and managed to land a series of explosive punches on KSI. Both were exhausted by the end of the round, as KSI landed a strong right hook. At this point there is no clear winner.

In round six, KSI connected with multiple strong punches against Logan, who seemed defeated with a minute to go. KSI’s stamina kept him above water.

In the end, the judges landed with a “majority draw,” giving the YouTubers another chance to settle the score and profit off the drama. The two already have a rematch in the works in Los Angeles.

Image: screenshot/YouTube

“Let’s give them a motherfucking rematch,” Logan said. He later said he felt like he won the fight, the crowd booed.

The two appropriately left the stage with more shit talking.

Regardless of the outcome, the months-long buildup to the event, along with the over 780,000 accounts that shelled over $10 and tuned in, helped line the pockets of the already rich YouTubers. Using their massive platforms fueled by clickbait-y drama, the Paul and Olatunji brothers did what they do best: take money from children — or, really, parents willing to open their wallets for merch and PPV.

‘At home, we’ve no chance’: Thousands reach Peru before new rules

news image

Thousands of people fleeing Venezuela’s deepening economic crisis have rushed towards the Peruvian border before the introduction of new rules making it harder to cross into the country.

As of 05:00 GMT on Saturday, Venezuelans are required to show valid passports instead of national ID cards to enter – although Peruvian authorities are reported to be “flexible” with children, the elderly and pregnant women.

Up to 4,000 people have been arriving daily in Ecuador, Peru, Colombia and Brazil, heading south to escape Venezuela’s political turmoil and economic crisis which has seen inflation skyrocket and public services fail amid chronic food and medicine shortages.

Peru, one of the region’s fastest growing economies with 4.7 percent growth projected for next year, is a particularly popular destination, with an estimated 400,000 Venezuelans already living there.

But a rising backlash to Venezuelan migrants prompted this week the introduction of the tougher border controls in Peru – as did Ecuador, though a judge there on Friday rolled back the passport regulations.

As Saturday’s deadline approached, thousands – some carrying small children – poured into Peru’s border with Ecuador by any transport means possible, with many travelling on foot.

“This is very sad,” Joander Perez, a 15-year-old Venezuelan who travelled more than 4,000km with members of his family, told Al Jazeera at the border.

“We were at the best time of our lives, with friends, school, family but we have to leave to find a better life,” he added.

“In Venezuela we were hungry.”

The United Nations has described the exodus of Venezuelans to neighbouring countries as a “crisis moment” comparable to events involving refugees in the Mediterranean.

And although numbers are alarming, this is not a new phenomenon, experts said.

“This started in 2002, when only the wealthy people migrated from Venezuela,” Ronal Rodriguez, a professor and researcher at the Venezuelan Observatory, a think tank at the University of Rosario in Colombia, told Al Jazeera.

“In 2007, we saw the migration of the middle class. But from 2015, onwards, we have seen the migration of the popular sectors,” he added.

“The ones that take the roads – even risking their own lives.”

‘Humanitarian corridor’

Ecuador opened a “humanitarian corridor” on Friday and lifted its own entry restrictions to facilitate the Venezuelans’ travels to Peru.

Interior Minister Mauro Toscanini said that 35 busloads of migrants were on the move along the route authorities had opened to Peru.

More than 2,500 migrants swamped the small Aguas Verdes crossing on Friday – 10 times the usual daily traffic.

“People keep on pouring into this border,” Al Jazeera’s Mariana Sanchez, reporting from Peru’s border with Ecuador, said on Saturday.

“Many believe that the Ecuadorean government does not want [Venezuelan people] to stay in Ecuador, because they were forced onto the busses – and even if people want to stay back there, they are being forced to come all the way here,” she added.

“Authorities [however] have said they will be flexible with people that have small children, elderly and pregnant women to allow them in without a passport,” she added.

Sanchez said on Saturday that those at the border without a valid passport were applying for asylum, “the only option that they have to be able to enter the country legally”.

The pace of departures has accelerated in recent days [Douglas Juarez/Reuters]

Of the 2.3 million Venezuelans living abroad, more than 1.6 million have fled the country since 2015, according to UN figures.

Colombia says it has already given temporary residence to 870,000 Venezuelans but it can barely cope.

It has pleaded with its southern neighbours to agree to a combined migration strategy, while Ecuador has called a meeting of 13 Latin American countries next month to discuss the crisis.

“From all countries, Colombia is the one that is taking the worst hit, we cannot ask the population to go back,” Rodriguez, the professor, said.

“Every day we receive pregnant women that require medical assistance. Turning them back is sentencing them to death, we need to respond and find spaces in societies that are feasible for them,” he added.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will set up a special team to ensure a coordinated regional response, his spokesman Stephane Dujarric said.

Venezuela is in a fourth straight year of recession, with double-digit declines in its gross domestic product. The inflation rate is expected to reach an astonishing one million percent this year, according to the International Monetary Fund.

Under President Nicolas Maduro’s leadership, industry is operating at only 30 percent, hit hard by the crash in oil prices since 2014 in a country that earns 96 percent of its revenue from crude.

In efforts to boost the economy and tame the rampant hyperinflation, Maduro and his government on August 20 rolled out a new currency, slashing five zeroes from the bolivar.

The new bolivar, which will be in circulation alongside the old currency during a transitional period, will be pegged to the country’s state-backed cryptocurrency, the petro.

“This change has generated huge uncertainty among Venezuelans, and people are not having easy access to the new currency,” Rodriguez said.

“All the paper money [new and old] look very similar, creating huge confusion, all of them are labelled as Bolivares, so now the citizens don’t know if they are using the right money or not”

“This situation has made incredibly difficult for Venezuelans to receive the remittances, creating huge chaos, this change is what ultimately motivated people to flew the country,”  he added.

Maduro, who says that he is the victim of a US-led “economic war” designed to sabotage his administration through sanctions, said that using the petro will abolish the “tyranny” of the dollar and lead to an economic rebirth in Venezuela.

Other measures recently introduced by the government include a loosening of foreign capital rules and a massive increase in the minimum wage.

But despite these moves, the pace of departures has accelerated in recent days.

“It’s sad – I graduated with a bachelor degree, now I can’t begin my career in law,” Zenalis Rodriguez, a Venezuelan at the Peruvian-Ecuadorean border, told Al Jazeera.

“We all gave up our future – in Venezuela we don’t have a chance.”

As the exodus continues, many fear the crisis will not end any time soon.

“Even if Maduro falls tomorrow, that doesn’t mean people will go back – people won’t go back to a country that is highly unstable,” said Rodriguez.

“This situation will transform Latin America, and it will last many years. A joint response will be required, Latin America will need to work as a region,” he added.

“These people will need to be absorbed and assumed, and the countries will need to come up with instruments that aid them and regulatory mechanisms to sort this crisis out.”

Burning Man begins under close police scrutiny, sorrow over deaths

news image

CLOSE

The annual Burning Man event centers on building an almost-anything-goes city in the desert for just a week.
Trevor Hughes/USA TODAY

RENO, Nevada — Tens of thousands of costumed participants flooding into Nevada for the annual Burning Man festival are facing newly toughened law enforcement scrutiny as they wind their way into the remote desert to build a temporary city for 70,000 people for a week of all-night dance parties and with a strong dose of nudity.

The event is being held for the first time since two notable deaths, including that of founder Larry Harvey, who passed away this summer following a stroke. Participants will also be mourning the death of man who during the final days of last year’s event shockingly ran into a massive fire in view of thousands of participants.

TRAFFIC STOPS: Burning Man threatens to sue Feds over traffic stops

The event officially runs Aug. 26-Sept. 3 and culminates in two days of massive fires, first the raucous burning of a 100-foot-tall wooden effigy amid a blazing fireworks display, and then the solemn burn of a wooden “temple” stuffed with notes and letters to loved ones.

About half the participants are returners, and the other half, like fulltime digital nomad Brittney Gustin, are brimming mix of excitement and anxiety. Burning Man participants must provide all of their own food and water for the event; the only things for sale will be coffee and ice. Friday found Gustin loading her van with supplies in a Walmart parking lot, surrounded by dozens of similarly occupied “Burners.”

“I have no expectations. And that seems like a good thing,” said Gustin, a health care consultant who lives in her van. General admission tickets for the eight-day event cost nearly $400 and sold out within minutes. Participants routinely give food or trinkets to each other, but bartering and the exchange of money is frowned upon.

MORE: The 10 Principles of Burning Man and other playa facts

The festival itself is facing a crossroads, driven by organizers’ eventual desire to increase annual participation to 100,000 people while maintaining the ethos that made it special in the first place: an “almost anything goes” atmosphere of nudity, drugs and all-night dance parties. Organizers are also trying to balance a culture of consent and the #MeToo movement with the festival’s longstanding tradition of strangers hugging hello.

The event has drawn criticism over the past several years for the growth of special camps for the ultra-wealthy, where hired staff cater to their every need, including customized Instagram-ready costumes, and private planes whisk them in and out without the inconvenience of waiting in line. Executives from Google, Apple, Facebook and Tesla have all attended previously.

CELEBRITY BURNERS: See who made appearances at Burning Man

But before it has even officially started, this year’s festival is already facing controversy: Federal police are targeting participants heading from Reno north into the desert, pulling over drivers for minor traffic infractions and searching for drugs.  Burning Man officials are threatening to sue the federal government over the traffic stops, complaining they are unwarranted and unconstitutional. Federal officials say the timing of the extra-tough traffic stops is merely a coincidence as the Trump Administration cracks down on opioid abuse.

CLOSE

Here’s a quick peek at the scene on the playa before the first official day of Burning Man.
Andy Barron, Reno Gazette Journal

“The real gauntlet is getting to the playa,” said Mike Harden, a member of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe, whose lands most Burners must cross via a two-lane road to reach the event. It’s unclear whether the get-tough law enforcement attitude will extend to the playa itself, which is federal land rented by Burning Man for the event. Federal cops circulate within the festival, and have been searching arriving vehicles to enforce the federal ban on marijuana, which is otherwise legal in Nevada.

Longtime participant AleXander Hirka of New York City said the “amazing” level of freedom at Burning Man is a major draw for participants, who adopt playa names, wear costumes and take on roles they might never consider in the outside world. That freedom means people are welcome to walk around naked without judgement or fear or arrest. As he usually does, Hirka is camping with a group of polyamorous friends, who celebrate unconventional romantic relationships. Still, Hirka said he’s noticed an increased law enforcement presence over his 11 years attending: “It does feel more oppressive.”

Crimson Rose, one of the event’s founders, last year said there’s always been a struggle to balance safety and freedom.

More: Burning Man-bound? Show a little respect for the locals

“It’s easy to dismiss the idea of strangers peacefully existing on a barren lakebed,” she said. “How do you explain it? It’s about community coming together. Sometimes people don’t know how to handle the extremes. There’s so much freedom here.”

Dozens of participants are usually arrested each year, mostly for drug possession, and the Burning Man organization officially disavows any illegal activity. In their threat to sue over the traffic stops, Burning Man organizers said the harsh policing seemed designed to stifle participants’ First Amendment rights to peaceably assemble and express themselves.

Free expression and the art accompanying it is what draws Tammy Remington of New York. Fantastic and whimsical art installations are scattered around the seven-square-mile “city” in the desert, and lighted vehicles circulate constantly, dance music pumping from massive speakers. There’s nothing else like it on Earth, she said.

“I don’t go because it’s cool. I don’t even think of it as cool,” Remington said. “It’s just that you go and there are these sublime moments you have that you know will never happen anywhere else and will never happen again.”

Downgraded Hurricane Lane dumps rain on Hawaii, flooding still a fear

Hurricane Lane may have looked like a monster storm earlier this week, but it petered out by Friday thanks to strong wind shear. Now a tropical storm, Lane still poses a threat to Hawaii in the form of flash flooding.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu extended its flash flood warning Saturday morning. It may be extended again, beyond Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Hawaii Standard Time, if heavy rain persists. The warning was issued for the northeast and southeast sides of the Big Island from Hawi to Hilo to South Point. The tropical storm warning remained in effect.

The National Weather Service said runoff levels remain high and an expected band of heavy rainfall moving onshore could overwhelm ground that is saturated from the rain that preceded Lane’s arrival. The storm already resulted in “life-threatening flooding and landslides,” according to the National Weather Service.

Some weather experts posted images on Twitter of Hurricane Lane breaking apart once it encountered wind shear.

While many felt the state dodged the worst of the storm, the torrential rain still caused significant flooding and damage.

Millions in Idlib brace for Syrian government assault

news image

Idlib, Syria – Nearly three million Syrians living in the northwestern province of Idlib are bracing for a possible government assault, which neighbouring Turkey has warned would result in a large-scale humanitarian disaster.

Idlib is the last remaining opposition stronghold in the country. It is home to about three million people, half of whom are internally displaced.

If the forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad press ahead with an offensive, observers say as many as 2.5 million Syrians could try to flee to the shuttered Turkish border, creating a new refugee crisis.

On Friday, Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu warned against the possible assault, while offering to work with Syria’s ally, Russia, to pursue a ceasefire in the area and prevent a mass exodus.

Many in Idlib are already preparing themselves for the worst case scenario.

“We won’t leave our nation alone again, we will defend our people until the last breath,” Ahmad Ghajar, an Idlib resident, told Al Jazeera.

Meanwhile, Muhammad al-Hajj Marai, owner of a candy shop, said the possible Syrian government assault “does no difference”.

“Why should I be scared? Assad has already been killing us for seven years – our families, brothers, and sisters, even the children.”

‘A catastrophe’

Since the conflict, Idlib has provided a refuge for many Syrians fleeing other parts of the country, including after government offensives targeting other rebel-held parts of the country.

Explainer: How important is Syria’s last rebel stronghold of Idlib?

The so-called Syrian Salvation Government is a civil authority formed in Idlib last year, and is backed by Hay’et Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the dominant rebel group in the province.

“It will be a disaster and a catastrophe if such an attack happens, because even rich and able governments can’t evacuate three or four million people quickly in such difficult conditions that we are living in,” said Jamal Shahoud, deputy prime minister of the Syrian Salvation Government.

Opposition groups in Idlib are attempting to unify into a “National Army”, with Turkey’s help, to try and overcome any divisions to fight the Syrian government. Some 70,000 fighters have pledged to fight against Assad’s forces.

But HTS has not offered its support yet.

Syrian forces have already dropped leaflets over Idlib, calling for rebel groups to surrender.

For now, those living in Syria’s last opposition stronghold can only wait and see what happens next.

Challenge Cup final: Catalans beat Warrington 20-14 to win first piece of silverware

Catalans beat Warrington to win first ever Challenge Cup
Ladbrokes Challenge Cup final: Catalans Dragons v Warrington Wolves
Catalans Dragons (14) 20
Tries: Tierney, Garcia, Wiliame Goals: Drinkwater 4
Warrington Wolves (6) 14
Tries: Murdoch-Masila, King Goals: Roberts 3

Catalans Dragons pulled off one of Wembley’s biggest upsets as the unfancied French side beat Warrington to win their first Challenge Cup.

No team from outside England had ever won the trophy in its 122-year history.

But from the moment that Lewis Tierney went over in the second minute, the Dragons looked capable of defying the odds.

Ben Garcia and Brayden Wiliame got their other tries, while Josh Drinkwater kicked four goals.

Warrington crossed twice, through Ben Murdoch-Masila and George King, who both began the game on the bench, while Tyrone Roberts kicked three goals.

But in front of 50,672 – Wembley’s lowest Challenge Cup final crowd since World War Two – former England coach Steve McNamara’s Dragons were deserved winners.

Even allowing for the way they stunned Super League leaders St Helens right from the kick-off in the semi-final, Catalans would surely never have dared to dream they could make the sort of start they did at the national football stadium.

Stefan Ratchford did not deal with the first high ball, Benjamin Jullien offloaded and Tierney, son of dual code rugby legend Jason Robinson, was over in the right corner – scoring a try at Wembley, just as his dad did in 1995, with two against Leeds in the last of Wigan’s famous eight successive wins.

After kicking the goal, Drinkwater quickly added two more points with a penalty.

And from 8-0 down with 10 minutes gone, suddenly it was an unexpectedly uphill battle for the Wire and there looked a distinct chance that the Dragons, beaten 30-8 here by St Helens in the first final at the rebuilt Wembley in 2007, might this time go one better.

Perhaps the idea that it might not be Warrington’s day began to formulate when, in a short space of time, so many little first-half breaks failed to go their way.

Lineham had a try chalked off in the right corner, 37-year-old Benny Westwood briefly had to go off, Dragons forward Mickael Simon got away with a high shot and Roberts made a mess of a promising break when he threw a loose pass.

But luck finally turned their way when, from Ratchford’s high ball, Daryl Clark put pressure on winger Fouad Yaha, who spilled backwards, and Murdoch-Masila was allowed to run in the easiest of tries under the posts.

Roberts’ conversion cut the gap back to two points, only for Garcia to then dive over and, when Drinkwater successfully kicked again, restore that eight-point cushion.

Worse was to follow at the start of the second half for the Wolves when Tony Gigot’s 40/20 kick to the left corner created the attacking platform for Wiliame to go over for the Dragons’ third try.

King’s try reduced the deficit, Roberts kicked the goal and then added a penalty to make it 20-14.

Despite Warrington’s best efforts late on, the French defended frenetically and held on for the historic win.

And it was a particularly personal triumph for three Englishmen – try scorer Tierney, coach McNamara, a loser at Wembley as a player with Bradford in 1997, and hooker Michael McIlorum, who picked up his third winner’s medal after successes with Wigan in 2011 and 2013.

Reaction

Catalans Dragons hooker Michael McIlorum told BBC Sport:

“It’s unbelievable. It’ll take a while to sink in but it will when we fly back and see the fans in Perpignan.

“The first three or four months of our season was one of the toughest periods of my career but it brought us closer together and we started working for each other and got our rewards.

“We made hard work of it today and kept dropping the ball but thankfully the boys dug in and we came away with a win.”

Catalans Dragons captain Remi Casty told BBC Sport:

“The progression of the club and the team through the 11 years is awesome and a great achievement for Catalans and for rugby league in France.

“Warrington came back well but we never gave up and we kept fighting to win.”

Warrington Wolves’ Chris Hill told BBC Sport:

“It hurts, the first 20 minutes broke us. We weren’t sensible enough and what they did to us was what we wanted to do to them.

“We have got to learn our lessons and got to stick together.”
