Our 5 most anticipated films of fall 2018

news image

Image: Annapurna / Mashable

Welcome to our 2018 fall movie preview. We’ve been coming at you all week with the movies you need to know over the next few months – like what to see if you’re getting emotional, feeling offbeat, hanging with the family, or prepping for awards season. Let’s wrap up today with the five films we’re looking forward to most, period.

Look, as much as we enjoy telling you what to watch, we know you’re not going to listen to all our suggestions. Your time is limited. So is your money. You can’t see everything. You need to prioritize.

So we’ve gone ahead and done that for you.

Today’s picks are the ones we think will be the cream of the crop and the talk of the town. They’re the one we’re clearing our calendars for, and that we’re hoping you’ll clear your calendars for as well. Here’s what to see if you just want to see the best of the best…

… and you like to be surprised: Bad Times at the El Royale (October 12)

We’re not entirely sure what’s going on in Bad Times at the El Royale, just that it involves a star-studded cast (including Jon Hamm, Dakota Johnson, Cynthia Erivo, and Chris Hemsworth) gathering at a seedy motel where something bad goes down. But we’re up for whatever twists writer-director Drew Goddard wants to throw our way. If Cabin in the Woods taught us anything, it’s that he can be fantastically entertaining when he’s upending all our expectations.

… and you crave something creepy: Suspiria (November 2)

Luca Guadagnino’s swooning sensuality (he directed Call Me By Your Name) might make him an odd fit for a reimagining of a ’70s horror classic – and that’s exactly why we’re intrigued by Suspiria. Dakota Johnson stars as a young dancer who joins an academy led by Tilda Swinton’s Madame Blanc, and soon realizes that something very sinister is happening there. Just the trailer made our stomachs churn – but, you know, in a good way.

… and you enjoy watching Viola Davis get away with murder: Widows (November 16)

Technically, we don’t know if Viola Davis’ character murders anyone here, but she definitely commits some kind of high-stakes crime. Directed by Steve McQueen of 12 Years a Slave and written by Gillian Flynn of Gone Girl, Widows stars Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Cynthia Erivo, and Elizabeth Debicki as four grieving women who step up to finish the job their criminal husbands could not.

… and you want to be deeply moved: If Beale Street Could Talk (November 30)

If Beale Street Could Talk is the new movie by Moonlight director Barry Jenkins, and it seems to share that earlier film’s aching compassion and startling beauty. Based on the novel by James Baldwin, it follows a pregnant woman (Kiki Layne) trying to free her fiancée (Stephan James) from a false conviction. Prepare to clutch your heart and moan quietly.

… and you live for comics: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (December 14)

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse might sound like an elaborate gag from Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, but it’s very real and looks very good. Here is a comic book movie that actually looks like a comic book come to life, and even has a super comic book-y premise: a confluence of alternate realities, each with its own Spider-Man. Shameik Moore voices Miles Morales and, in a totally perfect bit of casting, Jake Johnson plays an older Peter Parker.

Each day this week, we rolled out another bunch of picks for our fall movie preview. Find out what to watch if …

Monday: … you want to feel some feels
Tuesday: … you’ve got a taste for the offbeat
Wednesday: … you’re with the family
Thursday: … you’re ready for awards season
Friday: … you just want to see the best of the best

The backbreaking work of Spain’s exploited hotel cleaners

news image

Maria* cleans rooms at a large Spanish hotel.

She arrives before 8am, changes into her uniform and heads to the housekeeper’s office to get her cleaning schedule.

“It really depends on the hotel’s occupation, but we usually get 16 to 18 rooms,” says Maria, who is using a pseudonym to protect her identity.

“First you open the windows to ventilate the room, and take out the rubbish. Then you make the beds and change the linen. Dust. Restock the mini-bar. Three sodas. Two beers. Water. Two chocolate bars. Then comes the bathroom. Shower. Sink. Toilet. Bidet. After that, you vacuum and wash the floor.”

Her least-favourite part is the bathroom.

“You can find anything in a hotel room, but the toilet is the worst part. You can’t even begin to imagine what we have to deal with.”

A room that guests are checking out from takes 30 minutes to clean if it isn’t dirty. Otherwise, it can take up to an hour, sometimes more.

Coffee and ibuprofen, the chambermaid’s breakfast. My husband calls me the painkiller queen.

Maria, chambermaid

If a guest is staying another night, it’s a little easier.

“Then it only takes 15 to 20 minutes, if you don’t have to change the linen,” says Maria. “It’s impossible to finish in eight hours, so we skip lunch and work overtime for free. If you refuse, you’re fired.”

The 44-year-old is blonde and pale, with clear blue eyes and blue-painted eyelashes.

“I moved to Madrid for love,” she says. “I’m from a provincial city. I met my husband there and we fell in love. We still are.”

After marrying and moving to Madrid, she worked as an accountant for the National Lottery Administration, but became jobless when the post was computerised.

“I never had any trouble to do my fair share of work, so I applied to clean hotel rooms. Finding a job wasn’t too hard even during the crisis. At the beginning it was through temporary work agencies, now there are these outsourcing companies. How to call them? I call them exploiters,” she says.

Angela Munoz, vice president at the Madrid chapter of Las Kellys, a nationwide association of chambermaids, explains that outsourcing is widespread and harmful in the hotel industry.

The job, says Munoz, has always been hard and ungrateful. But in 2012, there was another turn of the screw when hotels began outsourcing their cleaning departments.

“A chambermaid hired directly by a four-star hotel in Madrid makes around 1,400 euros ($1,636) per month. One hired by an outsourcing company has to clean up to 400 rooms per month to make between 800 ($935) and 900 euros ($1,052),” says Munoz.

There are an estimated 100,000 chambermaids in Spain. Las Kellys has begun organising protests against their mistreatment.

Juan Rubino is an employment lawyer from Madrid. He does not represent any of the chambermaids in this story.

The law, he says, is unclear about outsourcing.

“So it’s the courts that have established precedents … The rule of thumb is that outsourcing is illegal if the hotel manages the employees. Otherwise, it’s legal in most territories.”

Rubino explains that forcing unreasonable workloads on employees goes against the law.

“A company can’t ask for more work than an employee can possibly do. Overtime must always be voluntary, paid, and never be over 80 hours per year,” he says.

Spain was one of Europe’s worst-hit countries in the financial crisis.

Ernest Canada, professor at the University of Barcelona and coordinator of NGO Albasud, says the economic trauma trapped chambermaids.

“The hospitality industry in Spain was heavily indebted before 2008,” he says. “Once the financial crisis hit, the banks sold this debt to international investment funds, who wanted to guarantee a return, so they put the screws on to the hotel companies. They then made cuts where it was easier: the workforce, whose salaries represent 40 to 50 percent of a hotel’s operating costs.

“In addition to that, many chambermaids became the main breadwinners in the family during the crisis, as their partners lost their jobs … They had to hold on to their jobs at any cost.”

Outsourcing companies face barriers in the two Spanish archipelagos – the Balearic and Canary islands.

“I make around 1,400 euros ($1,636) per month, and work eight hours and no more,” says Sara, who was hired directly by a four-star hotel in the island of Mallorca.

“We clean 24 rooms per day, plus common areas, but I always go home at my scheduled time. How do I manage? Well, if I can’t clean your room so well, then your room won’t be so clean,” she says, describing a heavy workload.

Painful work

Canada, the professor, says in addition to overburdening staff, other examples of mistreatment include zero-hour contracts.

The industry’s obsession with overworking staff in an apparent bid for efficiency can lead to injuries.

Maria has learned to live with pain.

“Everything hurts,” she says. “Your hands, your legs, your arms, your back.”

She takes several doses of ibuprofen and paracetamol a day, a widespread habit among hotel cleaners.

“Coffee and ibuprofen, the chambermaid’s breakfast. My husband calls me the painkiller queen.”

One evening, Maria left work with acute back pain. She tried sleeping it off, but it was worse in the morning. The physician confirmed that her spinal nerve tissue was protruding from her backbone.

She bandaged her body, took some pills and headed to work.

“I know better than to take sick leave. If you take more than one week, they will fire you,” Maria says.

Dilcia, 42, knows that better than anyone.

She was a graphic designer with 13 years of experience, but has been working at hotels since 2007, when she arrived to Spain from Honduras.

“When you’re a foreigner, you take whatever you can get,” she says. “I started at the bar of a hotel in Barcelona. After a while I started cleaning rooms. It was hard work, but we were treated right. I made around 1,400 euros ($1,636) per month, and we cleaned the rooms in teams of two. I miss those days.”

Last May, she got lower back pain.

“I couldn’t even climb the stairs to get to my door. The doctor told me I couldn’t work,” explains Dilcia. Two months later, while still recovering, she got a call. Her contract had been terminated.

Dilcia is attempting to sue the outsourcing company, Exeo, and is waiting to appear before the court.

Rubino, the lawyer, explains that companies cannot sack workers on sick leave.

“Unless there’s a disciplinary cause, the dismissal is deemed unfair, giving the fired employee the right to be compensated,” he explains. “Many of us think it should be directly illegal, because it’s an attempt against the right to physical integrity.”

Al Jazeera first interviewed Maria, the 44-year-old, during her annual leave. When she returned to work, she was fired.

“They said I’m not convenient after I demanded to be compensated for working bank holidays,” she said.

Her employer Grupo Constant declined to comment, saying the subject was not “part of the company’s communication policy”.

AC Hotels by Marriott, the hotel chain she was working in, didn’t respond to Al Jazeera’s requests for comment.

Al Jazeera sought responses from several hotel groups believed to be using outsourcing companies to some extent. Most ignored the calls and one replied issuing no comment.

Al Jazeera also tried to interview outsourcing companies such as Exeo, Externa and Grupo Eulen, but none of them responded to repeated requests for comment either.

“I’ll find another hotel job, but I’ve sent my CV to a clothing store too,” says Maria. “I’ve got the experience, so who knows?”

Jose Mourinho: Man Utd boss says he is still ‘one of greatest managers in the world’

news image

I am one of the greatest managers in the world – Mourinho

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho says he will be “one of the greatest managers in the world” even if he does not win the Premier League at the club.

United have lost two of their first three league games, their worst start to a season since 1992-93.

Defending his record, the 55-year-old quoted a German philosopher and said he was “the only manager to win in Italy, Spain and England”.

He also said second place last season was “one of his greatest achievements”.

“I am the manager of the one of the greatest clubs in the world but I’m also one of the greatest managers in the world,” said Mourinho.

Asked if he would still be a great manager if he did not win the title with United – who have won the English top flight 20 times, including 13 Premier Leagues – the Portuguese replied: “Of course.

“Did you never spend time reading the philosopher Hegel? He said: ‘The truth is in the whole. It’s always in the whole that you find the truth.’

“Do you ask the same question to the manager that finished third in Premier League last season or the manager that finished fourth or fifth?”

‘Respect! Respect! Respect!’ – Mourinho walks out of news conference

Mourinho’s latest comments come after a news conference during which he demanded “respect” from journalists following Monday’s 3-0 home loss to Tottenham – the heaviest home defeat of his career.

He pointed out that the three Premier League titles he had won previously with Chelsea were more than the rest of the division’s managers combined.

Before his team’s trip to Burnley on Sunday (16:00 BST kick-off), the Portuguese added: “I had great success last season and that’s probably what you don’t want to admit.

“Two seasons ago we had a fantastic season because we won the Europa League. We won it because it was our level. We are the last team in England to win a European competition.

“I have won eight titles. I’m the only manager to win in Italy, Spain and England.

“Not small titles, proper titles, and my second place last season was one of my greatest achievements in football.”

Aretha Franklin funeral: Hundreds in line as nation mourns and celebrates the Queen of Soul

news image

Published 7:43 a.m. ET Aug. 31, 2018 | Updated 8:52 a.m. ET Aug. 31, 2018

Thousands of friends, family, fans, celebrities and dignitaries will pay their final respects today to Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul, who died of pancreatic cancer on Aug. 16.

Franklin will be buried in 24-karat gold plated Promethean casket made of solid bronze. The interior is finished with champagne velvet. Franklin’s title, “Queen of Soul,” and her name “Aretha Franklin” are embroidered in the casket with gold metallic thread.

Franklin’s body arrived at Greater Grace Temple in Detroit earlier this morning in a white 1940 LaSalle hearse. The private funeral, which is being livestreamed, is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. ET.

The vintage two-door, three-speed LaSalle made by Cadillac is the same vehicle used to carry the Rev. C.L. Franklin, father of the Queen of Soul, in 1984; David Ruffin, baritone for the Temptations, in 1991; and Rosa Parks, civil rights icon, in 2005.

Speakers: Bill Clinton, Smokey Robinson, the Rev. Jesse Jackson and more

Performers: Ariana Grande, Stevie Wonder, Faith Hill, Jennifer Hudson and more

Lines form early

Lines formed very early Friday morning outside for today’s funeral. Most mourners came dressed in church clothes and carrying folding chairs.

People who lined up last night for an early spot in line found themselves pushed to the middle of the line after police forced the crowd to reorganize from a residential street.

“I was here since 8:30 last night. We were right here, and they pushed us to the back,” said Debra Demmings, 63, of Minneapolis.

Although the service is limited to family members, friends and selected guests, you can  watch it live here on usatoday.com (above). Several broadcast networks will also carry live video

Church prepped for funeral

Police officers with dogs went through the church about 7 a.m. Shortly thereafter, nurses, musicians and some VIPs entered the church.

Among them was Elaine Steele, the longtime spokesperson for Rosa Parks. She said Franklin was extremely supportive of Parks.

“She was the greatest. She didn’t belong just to us, but she was from us,” Steele said. “We held our heads high and stuck our chests out wide because of her genius and her willingness to share it.”

Network news teams from NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox News are on platforms facing the church’s side entrance along with set-ups for local news outlets.

Stars and dignitaries will honor the Queen

Stevie Wonder and Ariana Grande are among the many performers lined up to sing at the funeral, with other names including Faith Hill, Ronald Isley, Chaka Khan, Fantasia and Jennifer Hudson.

Franklin will be honored by various high-profile speakers, including former President Bill Clinton, former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, Motown star Smokey Robinson, the Rev. Jesse Jackson and Detroit Pistons great Isiah Thomas.

After the funeral, Franklin will be buried at Woodlawn Cemetery, alongside late family members including her father, the Rev. C.L. Franklin.

Lana Condor shares adorable story about ‘To All The Boys…’ co-star Noah Centineo

news image

“I watched To All the Boys the other night by myself, as one does, and I was loving it,” Lana Condor reveals to me on the phone earlier this week. “I was sitting there by myself and I just was like, giggling cause I think [Lara Jean] is like the cutest person in the world.”

That’s how hard the world has fallen for Netflix’s To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before; the film’s own star can’t resist its charm and forgets, while watching, that these are not real people, that she is not, in fact, Lara Jean Song Covey.

“It’s a really cute movie and it makes me happy,” she adds. “I’m in love with Lara Jean and Peter too! I was like, ‘You go girl! You get him!’”

Condor is a self-proclaimed cynic who was hopeful but not expectant about To All the Boys‘ success.

“It has truly made my dreams come true and I never expected it to be like this well-received,” she says. “I wake up every morning smiling because this is what you hope your movie will do.”

Since the film’s social media-stopping debut weekend, critics have dissected what makes the film such a pure delight and instant success.

“The story is very universal, and I think with Netflix because it was released globally, there’s a lot of people who can relate to it,” Condor says. “The things that Lara Jean and Peter go through are very universal problems…it seems people are refreshed to see like wholesome, feel-good content, because there’s not a lot of that out there.”

help me!!!!!

help me!!!!!

And then, of course, there’s the crush.

Condor’s costar Noah Centineo a.k.a. Peter Kavinsky stole thousands if not millions of hearts as the embodiment of new masculinity and a most unproblematic fave. Condor says she’s seen men on Twitter admiring Kavinsky and saying he made them want to step up their game.

“Nowadays I think guys are more emotional and they’re more in tune with how they feel and I think Peter shows that,” she says. “So hopefully guys will treat girls better – I freaking hope so! They should’ve already, in the first place – but if Peter’s the one to change their minds then let it be!”

The same is true of Centineo, whose success makes his Lara Jean giggle with gratitude.

“The world loves Noah, like everyone’s in love with Noah,” Condor says. “As we were shooting the film I was like, ‘Oh my god the world is not ready for Noah, he’s just gonna charm the whole entire world,’ and he definitely did that.”

And not without reason, she adds. During production, she received some bad news and was feeling down one evening when she texted Centineo. He was at a dinner, and Condor just gave him a heads up that she could use company if he was free afterward.

“As soon as he got the text, he got the bill, got up from dinner, ran like seven blocks, full sprint, sent me a video – full sprint! – of him running back to our apartment building, ran upstairs, banged on my apartment door, came in, swaddled me like a baby with a bunch of blankets, and then cleaned my whole apartment.”

“There’s a reason the world is thirsting after him. He’s a great guy!” she laughs.

To All the Boys not only gave its audience new crushes, but it made the jittery uncertainty of a teen crush seem more appealing than ever.

“In my case, I get really obsessed with the person,” Condor said of her own boys she’s loved before. “I think about them all the time and it’s distracting and I can’t do anything else! But having a [pure] crush like Lara Jean and Peter, it just makes you smile and makes you feel happy and makes you feel hopeful, and I love it.”

KISS

KISS

Condor is still feeling the love for the film and for Lara Jean (“I just think she’s the cutest person in the world!”), and she’s grateful to be part of a watershed moment for representation at the movies.

“It’s not often that Asian American actresses get this juicy of a character, and they wrote her so three-dimensional and dynamic, and it’s just really exciting,” she said.

Before this, Condor was known for sci-fi and action movies; it’s a different kind of acting, something that goes hand in hand with “flashing lights” and visual effects.

But in To All the Boys and Crazy Rich Asians, Asian American characters get to be themselves and rely on good old-fashioned acting and emotion. The yields are undeniable, to the tune of Crazy Rich Asians‘ box office domination and To All the Boys stealing hearts on streaming.

“I am beyond honored to share the same opening weekend and it makes me want to cry because it’s long overdue,” Condor says. “If we just keep hitting it hard with representation hopefully we can continue this amazing moment…I don’t want it to just be like we had an amazing summer and then all of a sudden there’s no more representation. I don’t want it to be just squeezed toward summer. I want it to transition to fall, and winter, and spring, and again and again and again and again.”

“Seeing all this happen all at once and seeing how people are responding to it and that they actually want to see more of it, it’s so validating,” she adds “If I had seen this when I was younger I would’ve believed in myself a little bit more as a performer.”

Now she’s an inspiration to the young Lara Jeans of the world, cheering them on as they chase their dreams.

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before is now streaming on Netflix.

UAE used Israeli spyware ‘to hack’ phones belonging to opponents

news image

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) used Israeli spyware to hack into phones belonging to political and regional rivals, as well as members of the media, emails obtained by the New York Times appear to show.

According to a report published on Friday, leaked emails submitted in two lawsuits against the Israel-based NSO Group suggested involvement in illegal spying for clients.

The two lawsuits that are filed in Israel and Cyprus were brought about by a Qatari citizen and Mexican journalists, as well as activists who were targeted by the company’s spyware programme, Pegasus.

To activate the spyware on the target’s phone, a text message is sent with a link.

If the target clicks on the link, Pegasus is secretly downloaded to the phone, enabling the user of the technology to gain access to all contact details, text messages, emails, and data from Facebook, Skype, WhatsApp, Viber, WeChat, and Telegram.

According to the New York Times, the lawsuits argue that the NSO Group’s affiliate successfully recorded the calls of a journalist and attempted to spy on foreign government officials at the request of its Emirati customers four years ago.

Emails submitted in the lawsuits showed that the UAE signed a contract to license the company’s surveillance software “as early as August 2013”.

The hacking of Qatar’s state-run news agency and government social media accounts on May 24, 2017, set into motion a major diplomatic crisis, which saw Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt sever diplomatic relations and cut off land, air, and sea links with Qatar on June 5 last year.

The NSO Group group also sold the surveillance technology to Mexico on condition that it should be used only against criminals and “terrorists”, yet some of the country’s most prominent journalists, academics, human rights lawyers and criminal investigators have been targeted.

On August 1, Amnesty International released a report that said one of its employees was baited with a suspicious WhatsApp message in early June about a protest in front of the Saudi Embassy in Washington.

The London-based human rights organisation said it traced the malicious link to a network of sites tied to the NSO Group.

The company has previously admitted charging customers $650,000 to hack 10 devices, on top of a $500,000 installation fee.

Premier League predictions: Lawro v Greg James, BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show host

news image

Liverpool will look to continue their perfect start to the season this weekend but face a tricky test against in-form Leicester.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have won all three of their Premier League games so far and are yet to concede a goal but the Foxes have recovered well since an opening day loss to Manchester United with back-to-back wins.

Lawro is making predictions for all 380 top-flight matches this season, against a variety of guests.

This week’s guest is BBC Radio 1 presenter Greg James.

Greg has just completed his second week as Radio 1’s Breakfast Show host and he said: “The early starts are fine once you get here. Getting here is the real pain, but it is a great fun job to do and I love it.”

Greg is an Arsenal fan but admits he doesn’t quite have the same passion for football as he did as a kid.

“When Blackburn won the Premier League that was when I was obsessed with it,” he added. “I was a proper Arsenal fan. I got all the sticker books I had all the kits but then I just sort of drifted.

“I don’t play any more because I am terrible.”

Premier League predictions – week 4
Result Lawro Greg
SATURDAY
Leicester v Liverpool x-x 1-1 0-2
Brighton v Fulham x-x 2-1 2-2
Chelsea v Bournemouth x-x 2-1 1-0
Crystal Palace v Southampton x-x 2-0 1-0
Everton v Huddersfield x-x 2-0 3-0
West Ham v Wolves x-x 2-0 1-2
Man City v Newcastle x-x 3-0 4-1
SUNDAY
Cardiff v Arsenal x-x 0-2 1-1
Burnley v Man Utd x-x 0-2 3-1
Watford v Tottenham x-x 1-2 0-2

A correct result (picking a win, draw or defeat) is worth 10 points. The exact score earns 40 points.

LAWRO’S PREDICTIONS

All kick-offs 15:00 BST unless stated.

SATURDAY

Leicester v Liverpool (12:30 BST)

Lawro’s prediction: 1-1

There’s no Jamie Vardy for Leicester but they’ve done well after a narrow defeat by Manchester United. Liverpool have also started extremely well but Leicester should be top-10 material this season and it will be a tough game.

Greg’s prediction: 0-2

Match preview

Brighton v Fulham

Lawro’s prediction: 2-1

I did really worry where Fulham’s goals would come from, but Aleksandar Mitrovic has started the season well. However, Brighton have a knack of getting a defeat and then winning at home next time and they just have that bit more quality than they did last season.

Greg’s prediction: 2-2

Match preview

Chelsea v Bournemouth

Lawro’s prediction: 2-1

Bournemouth have enjoyed their best start for ages – but Chelsea have won all three of their games so far. With Maurizio Sarri coming in it looked like it might take them time to get used to his system, but he has started really well. Despite Bournemouth’s good start, I don’t think they expect to get much at Stamford Bridge.

Greg’s prediction: 1-0

Match preview

Crystal Palace v Southampton

Lawro’s prediction: 2-0

Southampton have struggled and scoring goals is their major problem. The Saints have just started to worry me a little bit.

Greg’s prediction: 1-0

Match preview

Everton v Huddersfield

Lawro’s prediction: 2-0

Everton have started brightly and Huddersfield just have the one point from their home game against Cardiff. There’s a real feel-good factor at Goodison, and goals are flying in as well.

Greg’s prediction: 3-0

Match preview

West Ham v Wolves

Lawro’s prediction: 2-0

West Ham have frightened me defensively – and if the back door has not got a lock on it you have a problem. Wolves’ goal against Manchester City shouldn’t have happened, but it was a good point for them.

Greg’s prediction: 1-2

Man City v Newcastle (17:30)

Lawro’s prediction: 3-0

Newcastle were smashed out of the Carabao Cup. I know they go on about Mike Ashley – and they have a point – but he isn’t going to change. They have to get on with what they have got. This will be a very tough game.

Greg’s prediction: 4-1

SUNDAY

Cardiff v Arsenal (13:30)

Lawro’s prediction: 0-2

Arsenal… interesting. Goals are not a problem for them, but it will be a culture shock for some of the new players going to Cardiff. However, I think they have enough. Cardiff know they will be scrapping for points all season. They will give everything they’ve got and they have a a manager who knows how to get them going.

Greg’s prediction: 1-1

Match preview

Burnley v Man Utd (16:00)

Lawro’s prediction: 0-2

Burnely are out of the Europa League and struggling. Manchester Utd are in a bit of a mess – it is time to get their heads screwed on and get a win.

Greg’s prediction: 3-1

Match preview

Watford v Tottenham (16:00)

Lawro’s prediction: 1-2

Both these teams have started really well. With Watford, I always worry they will have that dip and look like a team cascading towards relegation – but I like the manager. Tottenham did seem to miss the boat by not signing anyone during the summer transfer window, but they have some really good players.

Greg’s prediction: 0-2

Match preview

Lawro was speaking to BBC Sport’s Gary Rose.

How did Lawro do last week?

On the third weekend of the new Premier League season, Lawro got four correct results but no exact scores from 10 matches for a total of 40 points.

He was beaten by actor Idris Elba, who got six correct results and no exact scores for a total of 60 points.

Twitter image threatens shooting Meghan McCain; her husband blasts Twitter’s CEO

news image

CLOSE

The first of a series of memorials commemorating his life was a private ceremony at the Arizona state Capitol on Aug. 29, 2018.
Associated Press

On the same day Arizona held memorial services for the late Sen. John McCain, a Twitter user posted a doctored image that appeared to threaten to shoot Meghan McCain as she wept over her father’s casket.

By that night, Ben Domenech, Meghan McCain’s husband, was blasting Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey for allowing the threatening post to stay up.

“Tell me why this is cool by you,” Domenech wrote on Twitter, targeting Dorsey’s online handle, @jack.

The photo appears to be a doctored version of a photo taken Aug. 29 at a private memorial service at the Arizona Capitol. During the emotional service, Meghan McCain wept over the casket holding her father’s body.

The edited image shows a pair of hands holding a semiautomatic handgun, clearly trained at the grieving woman’s chest.

“America,” the tweet accompanying the photo reads, “this ones for you.”

In his later tweet, Domenech, publisher of conservative web magazine The Federalist, says that the threatening image had been online for half a day and “reported” more than 100 times, presumably meaning the tweet had been flagged for Twitter administrators.

Soon after, Domenech added another tweet, presumably also directed at Dorsey, “You should prepare an answer for the people pissed off at you. A hint: the entire committee.”

Twitter’s rules include a ban on “specific threats of violence or wish for the serious physical harm” and “targeted harassment.”

In recent years, though, users have taken aim at Dorsey. The site is often criticized for widespread sexual harassment, rape threats, and threats of violence. Four years ago, harassment directed at female gamers on Twitter morphed into an all-out scandal christened “Gamergate.”

Dorsey vowed last year to address the abuse, promising to go after hate groups, unwanted sexual advances and tweets glorifying violence.

It’s unclear who is behind the @austindelafrog account that posted the image of shooting Meghan McCain.

Less than a half hour after Domenech posted his tweet, the account turned private.

Meghan McCain married Domenech in Nov. 2017, several months after her father was diagnosed with Glioblastoma, an aggressive and lethal form of brain cancer. She is a host on the TV talk show “The View.”

John McCain died Aug. 25. In the days after, Meghan, her mother, Cindy, and other family members have seen an outpouring of support online and across the country. Scores of Arizonans lined Phoenix streets Thursday to honor the late senator as a motorcade carrying his body passed.

Erdogan: Turkey needs Russia’s S-400 missile defence system

news image

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has reiterated his country’s need for the highly advanced Russian S-400 missile system, a planned purchase the US opposes.

Speaking at a graduation ceremony for military officers, the Turkish leader said Ankara would try to procure the missile system as soon as possible.

The S-400, touted by experts to be one of the most advanced systems in the world, can engage multiple aerial targets within a 400 kilometre range.

NATO circles view Turkey’s intended purchase of the Russian-made equipment with suspicion, as it is believed to be incompatible with the systems used by the alliance.

Earlier this month, Russia said the S-400 missiles would be delivered to Turkey in 2019.

US military officials and politicians have expressed concerns over Turkey’s intention to buy the Russian system, and the purchase comes amid a growing rift between Turkey and its NATO allies.

The US imposed sanctions against Turkey earlier this month in an effort to force the release of a US pastor who Ankara claims is linked to plotters of a failed 2016 military coup.

Turkey, which has until now relied on Patriot batteries from NATO for its air defence, has been looking to procure its own system for years.

In 2012, Ankara requested air defence support against threats posed by missiles from neighbouring Syria.

Responding to the request, several NATO allies contributed missile batteries to augment Turkey’s air defence. But the vast majority were withdrawn in 2015, despite Ankara’s concerns over the security of its border.

Turkey is not the only country buying the state-of-the-art S-400 from Russia.

On Thursday, the US said it might consider sanctions against India if it purchases the missile defence system.

Washington has warned that any country engaging in defence or intelligence sharing with Russia could be subject to sanctions.

Countries such as ChinaSaudi Arabia and Qatar have also bought or are planning to buy the S-400.

F-35 fighter jets

At the same event, Erdogan said Turkey also needs F-35 stealth fighter jets, which will be bought from the US.

However, after relations between the US and Turkey worsened, Erdogan said that Ankara would look at other vendors, if the US delayed delivery.

In 2014, Ankara placed a buy order of about 100 jets to replace its current F-4 and F-16 fleet.

Several US legislators have objected to the planned sale over concerns including Turkey’s plans to buy the S-400.

Premiership 2018-19: Saracens favourites & Danny Cipriani to return glory to Gloucester

news image

Saracens collected their seventh major piece of silverware in eight seasons when they won the 2017-18 Premiership final
Gallagher Premiership Rugby
Dates: 31 August – 1 June Coverage: Commentary on BBC Radio 5 live, sports extra and local radio on BBC Sport website, mobile, tablet and app. Reports on all matches and live text commentary on selected games.

Another Premiership season, another title for Saracens. Or so the predictions go.

Three months after winning their third final in four years, Sarries commence their latest quest for domestic glory with a trip to Newcastle Falcons on Sunday.

Before that, the season gets under way with a West Country derby as rebranded Bristol Bears host Bath at Ashton Gate on Friday.

Former British and Irish Lions trio Jeremy Guscott, Matt Dawson and Ugo Monye, who each enjoyed Premiership title glory as players, preview the new season alongside BBC Sport’s rugby union reporter Chris Jones.

The quartet share their title and relegation predictions and give an insight into who could shine and who could flop.

And you can have your say, too, by voting at the bottom of this page. Voting will close at 19:00 BST.

Who will win the Premiership?

Too much class, too much depth and too much winning experience.

These are all reasons why the panel agree that Saracens deserve to be considered clear favourites to collect their fourth English title.

Chris Jones: “I think Saracens will retain their title and continue their dominance of the English club game. They have only tinkered with their squad over the summer, but have become the masters of rebooting following success. I’m also expecting Exeter to be in contention and Gloucester to make the top four.”

Ugo Monye: “Saracens are my pick. They’re the defending champions and to win it last season they had to grow and learn how to get out of trouble. Going into a World Cup year you would expect all of their England internationals to peak and play their best rugby, so that makes them even more dangerous.”

Matt Dawson: “With young senior players such as Owen Farrell, Alex Lozowski, Maro Itoje and Jamie George there’s no reason to suggest that there will be a let up domestically by Saracens. Not only do they have star names, they have got a deep squad too.”

Jeremy Guscott: “It’s hard to look past Saracens, the way they finished after an indifferent spell in the middle of last season was nothing short of brilliant. Along with Sarries, Exeter are now an established force and have moved away from the other 10 teams in terms of quality and consistency of performance. The way Joe Simmonds, their rookie fly-half, came in and didn’t miss a beat is a sign of how well integrated all players are at the Chiefs and what a great job Rob Baxter and his coaches do.”

Who will get relegated?

Just as the experts unanimously agree that Saracens are hot tips for the title, they also predict a season of woe for Worcester – a club that has been up for sale since early last season.

Historically, the side promoted to the Premiership tend to plunge straight back into Championship – as Bristol and London Irish have in the past two seasons – but the manner in which Pat Lam’s Bears have returned to the top flight and recruited has impressed those in the know.

JG: “Worcester, with all their off-field uncertainty, look very vulnerable. They have recruited largely from outside the Premiership and not a lot of current internationals. While this looks like a ploy to keep selections consistent by not losing the international talent already at Sixways, I feel they will still struggle. Any team that doesn’t have an established and interchangeable front five and consistent number one picks at nine and 10 will struggle.”

UM: “Worcester will struggle. They haven’t thrived in the Premiership for the past few seasons and competition this year is going to be stiffer than ever. Bristol have invested big, they’ve got a proper coach in Pat Lam and there’s a belief within the community they will stay up.”

CJ: “The obvious answer to the relegation question is Worcester, who have perennially been at the bottom end of the table in recent seasons. With Pat Lam at the helm and a star-studded squad, which has had a year to build in the Championship, I do think Bristol will have enough to stay up. Harlequins may also find themselves at the wrong end of the table.”

MD: “It’s between Bristol and Worcester. Bristol’s star recruitment may just edge it but they need to gel quickly before the tougher winter months mentally test the imports. Worcester have a fabulous set up but I’m not sure Alan Solomons is the forward-thinking coach they need to drive a long-term success.”

Which new arrivals should we look out for?

A former Wallaby captain, a troubled England wizard and a former All Black capable of giving Wasps renewed sting are among the ones to watch this season.

MD: “Bristol have broken the bank with former Australia captain George Smith, the Piutau brothers (Charles and Siale), Steven Luatua, Nic Stirzaker and Luke Morahan. There are no excuses, they have to stay up. If they click and steer clear of injuries, Ashton Gate could be rocking.”

JG: “Lima Sopoaga looks to be an amazing signing – his ability in attack is special and his ability to step off both feet brilliantly will hold defences rooted to the ground and create space for his mates outside. I feel he will have the same effect Kurtley Beale had when he played at Wasps. The prospect of Sopoaga linking up with the likes of Willie le Roux, Elliot Daly and Christian Wade is mouthwatering.”

Danny Cipriani arrived to a fanfare at Kingsolm – but can he help lead Gloucester into the Premiership’s top four?

UM: “There are three, and they’re all fly-halves. Lima Sopoaga left New Zealand to come to England, giving up a possible World Cup place in the process. Danny Cipriani’s switch from Wasps to Gloucester and Dan Biggar moving out of his comfort zone to Northampton were also big. These three massive signings all play differently but are very special and will bring something different to the league.”

CJ: “Whether you feel Cipriani should be England’s number 10 or not, there is no doubting his ability to conduct a Premiership backline. He will demand the highest standards of his team-mates on the field and could be the man to fire Gloucester from mid-table mediocrity to play-off contenders. I’m also keen to see if the new Northampton backs coach Sam Vesty can bring some much-needed spark and cohesion to Saints.”

Which young guns are set to break through?

With England finishing runners-up at the World Rugby Under-20 Championship earlier this year, the nation’s sixth successive final appearance, emerging talent is queuing up across the Premiership.

From the fringes of Eddie Jones’ England squad to the understudies at club level, the rule is run over the next generation and those poised to make the next stride in their careers.

UM: “There are a few who could shine but I think we will see a big year from Joe Simmonds at Exeter. He broke through at the end of last season but he’s now been given the reigns at fly-half and will be starting this year – it could be huge for him.”

CJ: “Worcester’s 18-year-old centre Ollie Lawrence is one to watch. He is on Eddie Jones’ radar already after being called into an England training camp in May and has been getting plenty of game time for the Warriors in pre-season. That could prove handy experience as Ben Te’o is likely to be unavailable for large chunks of the season. Fly-half James Grayson, as Dan Biggar’s understudy at Northampton, will also get plenty of senior minutes this season.”

MD: “There are plenty of junior internationals knocking on the door – my godson James Grayson for one. But I want to find where the next generation of scrum-halves are. Behind Ben Youngs and Danny Care we’ve yet to see a real challenge, so will this be the year? There’s Harry Randall at Bristol, Max Green at Bath, Jack Maunder for Exeter and Saints man Alex Mitchell, as well as Saracens’ Ben Spencer and Wasps’ Dan Robson. Eddie Jones will give opportunities in training, but if there’s an injury to Danny or Ben who grabs the number nine jersey?”

JG: “Elliot Daly is far from a breakthrough player, but I would love to see him go injury free and step up further. In my eyes, he is the most gifted English player in the Premiership – his skillset is world class. For him to now show more, he simply needs to see more of the ball and playing on the wing doesn’t always allow that to happen, so I would move him to centre for England.”

What will be this season’s biggest surprise?

Will Danny Cipriani have Kingsholm rocking like it was 1999 and are Sale already counting the costs of early season absentees?

We have nine months’ worth of Premiership hits, highs and history to unfold ahead of us – and here are some of the storylines that just may end up surprising us.

CJ: “Free from the challenges of the Champions Cup, I think Sale will make the top six. If Chris Ashton (suspension) and Faf de Klerk (international duty) had been available for the start of the season, I think they could have even been outsiders for the top four.”

UM: “The league is so tight this year I don’t think we will get any surprises. Although, this time last year no-one predicted Newcastle would be in the top four at the end. I think the teams which were mediocre last season will get better and the points tally needed to stay up will be broken this season. Everyone on paper has a very competitive squad.”

MD: “Could this be Gloucester’s season? It would definitely be a surprise as year after year they’ve flattered to deceive. If Danny Cipriani pulls the strings we may find ourselves reliving the days of the ’90s and a formidable Cherry and White set-up.”

JG: “Any team breaking the stranglehold Sarries and Chiefs have on winning the Premiership final would be a surprise packet because these two sides have monopolised the trophy for the past four seasons. It’s hard to see a team that has a powerful enough front five that is consistently intense and interchangeable to compete against them.”
