Lando Norris: British driver, 18, given Belgium GP practice drive by McLaren

news image

Lando Norris won the European Formula Three title last year

British teenager Lando Norris will make his Friday practice debut for McLaren at this week’s Belgium Grand Prix.

The 18-year-old will deputise for Fernando Alonso after the double world champion announced he would retire from Formula One at the end of the season.

Norris, from Glastonbury in Somerset, is the reserve driver for McLaren.

But his Spa-Francorchamps drive will be his first behind the wheel during a full grand prix weekend and a chance to stake a claim for a 2019 race seat.

Alonso will return for the second and third practice sessions, qualifying and the race itself but his departure has created created a vacancy at McLaren next year.

One of those seats has already been filled by Carlos Sainz, but the identity of his team-mate is unclear, with the British outfit seemingly not certain to retain their current driver Stoffel Vandoorne.

Norris was approached by Toro Rosso in June to replace Brendon Hartley for the rest of this season, but McLaren said no.

McLaren sporting director Gil de Ferran said: “This weekend will be the first time that our reserve driver Lando will drive the MCL33 during a race weekend, as he steps into Fernando’s car for FP1 on Friday.

“This is not only part of his ongoing development, but also the evaluation and performance evolution of the car. We’ll be taking a strategic view race-by-race at where else this might be beneficial for us over the coming grands prix.”

Norris emulated Lewis Hamilton by winning the European Formula Three championship last year and is second in the Formula Two championship, the feeder series to F1.

The F1 season resumes in Belgium following its one-month summer break with Hamilton holding a 24-point lead over Sebastian Vettel.

‘Factfulness’ and ‘Educated’ among the titles on Obama’s summer reading list

news image

CLOSE

Barack Obama shared a second summer reading list on Facebook and it seems to have a theme. Keri Lumm discusses the books about truth.
Buzz60

Did former President Barack Obama just throw a little shade with his summer reading list?

As President Donald Trump’s personal attorney argues that “truth isn’t truth” and that facts are “in the eye of the beholder,” Obama said in a Facebook post that among the titles he picked up this summer were “Factfulness” by Hans Rosling and “Educated” by Tara Westover.

“One of my favorite parts of summer is deciding what to read when things slow down just a bit, whether it’s on a vacation with family or just a quiet afternoon,” Obama said. “This summer I’ve been absorbed by new novels, revisited an old classic, and reaffirmed my faith in our ability to move forward together when we seek the truth.”

The 44th president described “Factfulness” as “an outstanding international public health expert, is a hopeful book about the potential for human progress when we work off facts rather than our inherent biases.”

He called “Educated” is a “remarkable memoir of a young woman raised in a survivalist family in Idaho who strives for education while still showing great understanding and love for the world she leaves behind.”

Among the other titles Obama said he was reading this summer were “Warlight” by Michael Ondaatje, about a family in the aftermath of World War II, and “An American Marriage” by Tayari Jones, about the wrongful conviction on a young African-American couple. He also reread “A House for Mr Biswas” after Nobel-Prize-winning author V.S. Naipaul died earlier this month

Trump has not shared a reading list, but he has recommended several titles on Twitter, including “Liars, Leakers, and Liberals: The Case Against the Anti-Trump Conspiracy” by Jeanine Pirro, “The Russia Hoax: The Illicit Scheme to Clear Hillary Clinton and Frame Donald Trump” by Fox News anchor Gregg Jarrett, “The Briefing: Politics, The Press, and The President” by Sean Spicer, “Spygate: The Attempted Sabotage of Donald J. Trump” by Dan Bongino and D.C. McAllister and “The Case Against Impeaching Trump,” by Alan Dershowitz.

Ariana Grande And Pete Davidson Can’t Keep Their Hands Off Each Other At The VMAs

news image

The future Mr. and Mrs. Ariana Grande made their red carpet debut at the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards on Monday (August 20) night, and reader, it’s hard to keep breathing (and breathing and breathing) when the photos are this sweet.

The “No Tears Left To Cry” singer is nominated for five VMAs at this year’s show, including two of the night’s top prizes: Artist of the Year and Video of the Year. She’s also set to take the stage for a heavenly performance of “God Is a Woman,” while her supportive fiancé will no doubt cheer her on from his seat at Radio City Music Hall.

Until then, we have these PDA-filled photos of Ari and Pete to gush over. Seriously, these guys turned the pink carpet into an impromptu engagement photo shoot. Did you think we were exaggerating when we said they couldn’t keep their hands off each other? Just look at the evidence!

We know the couple likes to move fast. Davidson recently told GQ that he proposed to Grande the day he met her, and after a whirlwind courtship, they went public with the engagement and moved into a $16 million apartment in New York City. According to the Saturday Night Live comedian, the only real furnishings they have are “six beanbags,” but after tonight the duo might add to their decor in the form of a shiny new Moon Person — or two.

After all, everything might happen at the VMAs!

The 2018 MTV Video Music Awards air live tonight on MTV from Radio City Music Hall at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

Claudio Bravo: Man City goalkeeper ruptures Achilles tendon

news image

Claudio Bravo featured in just three Premier League games for Manchester City in 2017-18

Manchester City’s Chilean goalkeeper Claudio Bravo suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon in training on Monday.

The 35-year-old had scans in Manchester to confirm the injury and he will fly to Barcelona for further tests on Thursday.

Bravo’s injury leaves City reliant on 20-year-old Daniel Grimshaw to act as deputy to first choice Ederson.

Midfielder Kevin de Bruyne has already been ruled out for three months after picking up a knee injury in training.

Bravo, a substitute in City’s opening two Premier League matches, made just three top-flight appearances for the champions last season.

However, the keeper, signed from Barcelona for £15.4m in 2016, did provide manager Pep Guardiola with reliable back-up.

His presence allowed Guardiola to sell England Under-21 goalkeeper Angus Gunn to Southampton in July and Joe Hart to Burnley in August.

While Grimshaw is yet to make a single senior appearance, he signed a three-year contract at the club in June.

“No matter what happens, or how bad it looks today, life goes on, and tomorrow will certainly be better,” Bravo tweeted

Colorado man charged with first degree murder in deaths of his pregnant wife, 2 daughters

news image

CLOSE

34-year-old Shanann Watts, her unborn child and her two daughters, 4-year-old Bella Watts and 3-year-old Celeste Watts, were honored at a candlelight vigil outside their family home in Frederick, Colo. on Friday, Aug. 17.
Mikaela Rodenbaugh

GREELEY — Christopher Lee Watts, the Frederick man accused of killing his wife and two daughters, faces five counts of first-degree murder and four other felony charges filed by the Weld County District Attorney’s Office.

The district attorney’s office on Monday formally charged Watts with three counts of first-degree murder after deliberation for the deaths of Shanann, Celeste and Bella Watts, along with two counts of first-degree murder for causing the death of a person under the age of 12 while being in a position of trust. He also faces one count of unlawful termination of a pregnancy and three counts of tampering with a deceased body.

The complaint says mother and wife Shanann Watts “died as a result of the unlawful termination of the pregnancy.”

Weld County District Attorney Michael Rourke refused to answer most questions about the case, including whether his office would seek the death penalty, during a press conference held Monday afternoon.

“Way to early to have that conversation,” Rourke said about the possibility of pursuing the death penalty for Christopher Watts.

Rourke said investigators believe Bella and Celeste died on either Aug. 12 or 13, and that they know Shanann Watts had returned from a work trip on Aug. 13.

Story continues below the photo

Shanann Watts’ father, Frank Rzucek, spoke briefly during Monday’s news conference, thanking the community and law enforcement for its outpouring of support.

“Keep the prayers coming for our family,” Rzucek said.

Christopher Watts, 33, was arrested late Wednesday. Police said Shanann Watts was found dead in a shallow grave on property owned by Anadarko Petroleum, one of the state’s largest oil and gas drillers, where Christopher Watts worked as an operator. Investigators found what they believe are the bodies of 4-year-old Bella and 3-year-old Celeste nearby on Thursday.

Court documents filed Friday by the defense, which were obtained by 9News and shared with the Coloradoan, suggest Bella and Celeste may have been strangled and confirmed their bodies were found in an oil well filled with crude oil. They had been submerged for four days.

Rourke said his office filed a motion to unseal the arrest affidavit for Christoper Watts after filing formal charges Monday afternoon. The motion was granted by 19th Judicial District Judge Marcelo Kopcow prior to the 4 p.m. press conference.

On Friday, Kopcow denied a request by Christoper Watts’ defense attorney to require a coroner to collect DNA from the necks of the young girls.

The judge said in the order he would not tell the medical examiner’s office involved in the case how to do its job.

Autopsies were completed Friday on Shanann, Bella and Celeste Watts. The cause of their deaths has not been made public.

Weld County prosecutors said Watts was jailed in protective custody. He is scheduled to appear in court at 10 a.m. Tuesday to be advised of charges levied against him.

Read the unsealed arrest affidavit for suspect Christopher Watts at the bottom of this story.

All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in court. Arrests and charges are merely accusations by law enforcement until, and unless, a suspect is convicted of a crime.

Hollie Arnold wins javelin gold at World Para-athletics European Championships

news image

Hollie Arnold won Paralympic gold in the F46 event in Rio

British javelin thrower Hollie Arnold completed a clean sweep of major titles by winning gold at the World Para-athletics European Championships.

It was one of seven medals for GB on the first night of action in Berlin.

Arnold, 24, claimed her first European title having won Commonwealth gold in the F46 event earlier this year to add to her world and Paralympic successes.

“I’m so happy to have all the titles now but this is just a stepping stone,” said the Welsh athlete.

“I wasn’t expecting to compete at the Europeans because my event is not normally in so this is a bonus.

“The event got taken out in Swansea in 2014 so coming here I thought ‘I’m here, why not enjoy it?’ and try and get the crowd going and just go for it.”

Arnold threw a championship record of 40.15m to finish over seven metres clear of the rest of the field, but she never threatened her world record of 43.02.

Britain’s other gold went to wheelchair racer Harri Jenkins, who beat the only other competitor in the T34 100m final.

The Welshman, who has also played wheelchair basketball at under-23 level for GB, has seen a number of his rivals reclassified but said he was concentrating on getting the win.

“There has been a lot of movement of athletes in my class so I just wanted to go out there and do my thing,” he said.

“I was going in hoping for gold and I have come away with it in the end so I am really happy.

“This week is going to be a good learning curve for me for the future, with hopefully the world championships next year and going forward to Tokyo.”

Elsewhere there were silvers for teenagers Luke Nuttall (1500m T46) and Zak Skinner (Long Jump T13) as well as for David Devine (1500m T13) and Ali Smith (400m T38) while Laura Sugar won bronze in the women’s 100m T64.

Asia Argento bonded with her sexual-assault accuser during Knoxville-filmed movie

news image

At the Women in the World Summit in New York, Harvey Weinstein accusers Asia Argento and Ambra Battilana Gutierrez discuss the ramifications of the #MeToo movement and the importance of keeping the conversation alive. (April 13)
AP

Italian actress/director Asia Argento reportedly paid actor Jimmy Bennett $380,000 after he accused her of sexually assaulting him just a few months after his 17th birthday, when she was 37, according to the New York Times.

The two first bonded when he starred with her in the independent film “The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things,” which was filmed in Knoxville in 2003, when Bennett was 7 years old and Argento was 28.

Bennett is now 22, and Argento is 42.

Bennett reportedly took action against Argento after she became a leader in the #MeToo movement and accused prominent film producer Harvey Weinstein of repeated sexual abuse that she claims began when Weinstein raped her during the 1997 Cannes Film Festival when she was 21.

More: Report: #MeToo leader, Weinstein accuser Asia Argento paid off her sexual assault accuser

Argento co-wrote and directed “The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things,” in which she stars as a drug-addled prostitute and Bennett plays her son, Jeremiah. In the film, Argento’s character has her son dress as a girl and pretend to be her little sister. Her son is also raped by her boyfriend, played by Jeremy Renner, and spends three years in a Christian cult led by his grandfather, played by Peter Fonda.

Twin actors Dylan and Cole Sprouse play an older Jeremiah in the film.

The movie was filmed in Knoxville in late September and early October 2003. Downtown Knoxville is featured prominently in the movie, which was also shot at various other locations in Knoxville and Farragut. The movie, which debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in 2004, also stars Jeremy Sisto, Ben Foster, Marilyn Manson and Winona Ryder in an uncredited role.

According to documents obtained by the Times, “Jimmy’s impression of (his situation with Argento) was that a mother-son relationship had blossomed from their experience on set” of the Knoxville-filmed movie.

After appearing in “The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things,” Bennett starred in such major films as “Hostage” (with Bruce Willis), the 2005 remake of “The Amityville Horror” (with Ryan Reynolds), “Firewall” (with Harrison Ford), “Poseidon” (with Josh Lucas and Kurt Russell) and “Orphan.”

The documents obtained by the Times assert that Bennett’s career was derailed after his 2013 sexual encounter with Argento in a California hotel room, which “hindered Mr. Bennett’s work and income and threatened his mental health.” Bennett’s notice of intent to sue asked for $3.5 million to compensate for distress, lost wages and assault and battery, the Times reported, noting that he made more than $2.7 million in the five years before the alleged assault and then dropped to an average of $60,000 a year.

One of the documents states that Argento invited Bennett to her room at the Ritz-Carlton in Marina del Rey, California, on May 9, 2013, gave the 17-year-old alcohol, kissed him, undressed him, performed oral sex on him had intercourse with him. Later that day she posted a photo of the two of them on her Instagram account and said, it was the “happiest day of my life.”

But according to the claim reported by the Times, Bennett felt “confused,” “mortified” and “disgusted” on his way home after the encounter.

Last November, a month after Argento’s accusation against Weinstein became public, Bennett’s lawyer filed his notice of intent to sue to Richard Hofstetter, who was representing both Argento and her boyfriend, celebrity chef/TV personality Anthony Bourdain.

Argento then made arrangements to pay Bennett, according to the documents obtained by the Times.

Bourdain was found dead by apparent suicide in a hotel room in Kaysersberg, France, on June 8. He was 61.

In July, Harvey Weinstein, 66, pleaded not guilty in New York to felony sex-crimes charges, none of them involving Argento.

YouTube’s women of STEM make learning about science fun

news image

This post is part of Mashable’s ongoing series The Women Fixing STEM, which highlights trailblazing women in science, tech, engineering, and math, as well as initiatives and organizations working to close the industries’ gender gaps.

Learning shouldn’t stop after school ends, and the women of YouTube’s STEM channels prove that.

These aren’t the boring science lessons that you had to sit through in stuffy high school classrooms or massive college lecture halls. There are no tests, no grades, and no assignments. You will, however, need a sense of curiosity and a love for all things science.

If you’re driven by a desire to learn new things, check out these six women who are making STEM more accessible.

After noticing the lack of female students in computer science, computing and ITC teacher Carrie Anne Philbin decided to start making educational videos about coding. Her channel Geek Gurl Diaries includes tutorials and interviews with inspirational women in STEM. Since creating Geek Gurl Diaries, Philbin has become the Director of Education at the Raspberry Pi Foundation, where she creates learning resources for people interested in learning programming.

“By exposing students to the range of creative and exciting scientific careers in technology,” she says on her website, “they may discover an interest in a field they had previously dismissed.”

Dianna Cowern hosts a PBS digital series called Physics Girl, where she experiments with zero-gravity and DIY electric trains. With a background in physics from MIT and the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, Cowern is driven by educating the curious. Her channel covers a wide variety of topics from explaining what stretching does for the body to demonstrating the theory behind vortexes.

Have you ever wished you could know the backstory behind museum artifacts? YouTuber Emiliy Graslie’s channel dives into what goes on behind the scenes at The Field Museum in Chicago.

As the “Chief Curiosity Correspondent,” Graslie tries to explain why natural history museums are so important to society. Her channel has it all, from exploring the origins of a rare bird specimen donated to the museum by a murderer to showing her viewers why the museum keeps a rusty car door in its collection.

Have you ever wondered what happens to astronaut poop? Or how NASA managed to take pictures of Neil Armstrong on the moon? Ami Shira Teitel has the answers. As a Spaceflight historian and author, the self-proclaimed “space history nerd” runs a channel dedicated to explaining the history of humans in space.

“If there is a link to the past to any modern mission,” she says in her channel trailer, “I will find it and I will talk about the roots of it.”

Alex Dainis is a PhD candidate at Stanford University and runs a YouTube channel inspired by her love of genetics. She interviews fellow scientists, unpacks complicated theories so that someone without a science degree can understand them, and even answers questions about her program.

She also shows her viewers what it’s like to be a grad school student, from giving video lab tours to discussing the logistical nightmares that researchers face when conducting experiments.

Buying beauty products can be an overwhelming experience — in addition to figuring out what looks good, you have to decipher the ingredients, too. Trina Espinoza’s channel breaks down the complicated chemicals that fill the labels of your favorite products. From pointing out what you should look for in sunscreen to explaining how the heck micellar water works, Espinoza’s channel helps you understand exactly what you’re putting on your face.

As Espinoza says in her channel trailer, “I believe you shouldn’t need a PhD in chemistry to understand what’s in your beauty products.”

These are just a few women breaking down STEM topics on YouTube. Research shows that seeing women in STEM careers encourages girls to pursue learning about those topics — and right now women hold only a quarter of STEM jobs.

Beyond inspiring young viewers, these STEM YouTubers are encouraging them to be lifelong learners.

news image

Pierre Gasly made his F1 debut with Toro Rosso last year

French driver Pierre Gasly will replace the departing Daniel Ricciardo at Red Bull next season, the Formula 1 team have announced.

The 22-year-old, who drives for Red Bull’s junior team Toro Rosso, will line up alongside Max Verstappen.

Australian Ricciardo will leave for Renault at the end of this season.

“This incredible opportunity is another step forward in my ambition to win grands prix and compete for world championships,” said Gasly.

He only made his F1 debut at the Malaysian Grand Prix last October, but has scored 26 points for Toro Rosso this year, with a best finish of fourth in Bahrain.

Nicki Minaj slammed for comparing herself to Harriet Tubman

news image

Nicki Minaj’s latest tweet about Harriet Tubman was a head-scratcher.

The 35-year-old rapper, who named her new album “Queen,” took to Twitter Monday to share her definition of a royal: “All the QUEENS I remember, SHOOK (IT) UP!!!!!!!!”

Minaj went on to laud Harriet Tubman, the abolitionist icon who helped free slaves through the Underground Railroad, as a “Queen of the week.”

“Had she just sat there & ate her rice, you (expletive) history would’ve been a lot less triumphant,” she continued, adding a unicorn emoji.

The “Barbie Dreams” rapper instantly faced backlash on Twitter for comparing herself to the famed revolutionary.

One Twitter user said Minaj’s tweet was worse than Kanye West’s bizarre comment on slavery being a choice. Back in May, West told TMZ Live: “When you hear about slavery for 400 years … like, you was there for 400 years and it’s all of y’all?! It’s like we’re mentally in prison.”

User @ASAPVick_ tweeted: “Comparing your album sales to Harriet Tubman’s fight for freedom is the most stupid commentary on slavery in 2018 and that includes Kanye saying slavery was a choice.”

Another social media user failed to see the comparison: “I’m not sure if there’s a person in the US alive today who can respectfully compare (themselves) to ‘Harriet Tubman.’”

One Twitter user called the tweet disrespectful. “What are you doing that is even remotely in correlation with Harriet Tubman? This is an actually question to not shade,” the user tweeted.

But some of Minaj’s fans jumped to her defense, saying the tweet was an attempt to pay homage to Tubman. “She was calling her a queen she wasn’t comparing (herself),” said user @PAPIITOMII.

Minaj laughed it off once she realized her comments had gone viral.

“Y’all I had no idea Harriet Tubman was now trending. I said what I said. #QueenRadio will honor her tmrw. She said she could’ve rescued more slaves had they known they were slaves. I fought for streaming services to count toward billboard when alotta (people) stayed quiet,” she tweeted.

Minaj has been on a Twitter tirade over the weekend after “Queen” debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart, behind Travis Scott’s “Astroworld.”

She has called out everyone from Scott and Kylie Jenner to Spotify and Drake.

Minaj accused the youngest Jenner sister of using her social following to inflate Scott’s album sales. Jenner shared a link to her boyfriend’s website last week with her 113 million Instagram followers, along with an announcement that their six-month-old daughter Stormi would be joining them on tour.

“I put my blood sweat & tears in writing a dope album only for Travis Scott to have Kylie Jenner post a tour pass telling ppl to come see her & Stormi. lol. Im actually laughing,” she tweeted Sunday.
