Leftover season is upon us, which means that now is the time to invest in some solid Tupperware.

You may be thinking that the mix-matched menagerie of lids and plastic containers you have tucked away in your kitchen will do the trick, but I regret to inform you that it will not.

Come the end of your Thanksgiving meal, as you try to fit your leftovers into whatever food storage containers you have, you’ll wish you’d invested in some sturdy containers worthy of storing the meal you spent hours—days, even!—creating.

Beyond the holidays, the right food containers can make a hell of a difference when you’re packing your lunch, meal prepping, or storing things in the freezer for a later date. So, why not take this opportunity to invest in some food storage that will actually serve your needs rather than those flimsy plastic containers that came with your last Seamless order?

With so many options available, wading through the vast food container selections can be exhausting, so we’ve broken down the most vital information to consider before clicking buy.

Glass vs. plastic

Food containers often fall into one of these two categories. Plastic containers are lightweight and easily transportable, while glass tends to be sturdier and best for reheating leftovers. But which is actually better? It depends on what you intend on doing with your containers.

Typically, glass container is reserved for meals stored in the freezer or the fridge that can easily be transferred to the oven for heating up, while plastic containers are ideal for packing your lunches, Kim Kimbriel, a Container Store buyer told the Washington Post.

When it comes to plastic containers, there has been some concern over materials containing BPA (bisphenol-A) and phthalates, which may be “endocrine disrupters” (meaning that they can mess with your hormones,) according to Harvard Health Publishing. Now it’s easier than ever to find plastic containers that are BPA free, but there are still looming concerns over whether or not it’s ever really OK to microwave plastic containers. If you’re really worried about any potential side effects of using plastic containers, it’s probably best to stick with glass.

Containers for all occasions

The vast array of container options available is enough to make anyone’s head spin. They come in so many different shapes and sizes that it can be difficult to navigate which package or container is right for your particular set of needs.

If you’re a meal prepper or desire to become one, you’ll probably want to invest in a set of rectangular, medium-sized glass containers like Bayco’s 8-piece set available on Amazon for $31.99.

<img class="" data-credit-name='Bayco/amazon‘ data-credit-provider=”custom type” data-caption=”Perfect for prepping all your meals.” title=”Perfect for prepping all your meals.” src=”https://i.amz.mshcdn.com/cjybrftwmld4OP6QwelwgvvbnkE=/fit-in/1200×9600/https%3A%2F%2Fblueprint-api-production.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fuploads%2Fcard%2Fimage%2F881401%2Fa6ba7e62-b8a1-45b3-8817-612b172360a6.png” alt=”Perfect for prepping all your meals.” data-fragment=”m!294d” data-image=”https://ift.tt/2DhqWGJ; data-micro=”1″>

Perfect for prepping all your meals.

They’re easy to stack, heat, and fill with food for the entire week.

But if you plan to eat salads primarily or foods that don’t require reheating, these deli-style plastic containers from DuraHome might be a worthwhile investment. They’re also perfect for freezer storage or holding dry goods.

<img class="" data-credit-name='durahome/amazon‘ data-credit-provider=”custom type” data-caption=”Endless options.” title=”Endless options.” src=”https://i.amz.mshcdn.com/35jZz8ywVgX4Y9uZ-32cFrk-MWk=/fit-in/1200×9600/https%3A%2F%2Fblueprint-api-production.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fuploads%2Fcard%2Fimage%2F881393%2F42ca78ea-061b-4d2b-8af1-698a71cf6f59.png” alt=”Endless options.” data-fragment=”m!4aec” data-image=”https://ift.tt/2PWBYIm; data-micro=”1″>

Endless options.

Oh, and if you’ve been bringing a lot of soups or pastas to work with you, you may want to check out Zojirushi’s Stainless-Steel Food Jar.

Remaining ingredients

While glass tends to be ideal for most food storage situations, I find that mini plastic containers are perfect for storing those last couple of onion slices, leftover dressing, or herbs in the fridge or freezer.

Greenco’s mini food storage containers make it easy to hold on to your leftover ingredients without taking up much space. They’re BPA-free and freezer safe, but unfortunately they’re not microwave compatible.

<img class="" data-credit-name='greenco/amazon‘ data-credit-provider=”custom type” data-caption=”You can store an infinite number of sauces in these bad boys!” title=”You can store an infinite number of sauces in these bad boys!” src=”https://i.amz.mshcdn.com/-upX9dj9uGuxqwVs3ZUCoqni3_Q=/fit-in/1200×9600/https%3A%2F%2Fblueprint-api-production.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fuploads%2Fcard%2Fimage%2F881413%2Feb4dbb93-f6bc-49a9-8445-1dbb66131dc0.png” alt=”You can store an infinite number of sauces in these bad boys!” data-fragment=”m!98d7″ data-image=”https://ift.tt/2DfqTv0; data-micro=”1″>

You can store an infinite number of sauces in these bad boys!

General leftovers

For all your general leftover needs, a nice set of glass containers that range in size should do the trick.

We recommend the 30-piece glass Snapware set, available on Amazon for $$49.99. It may seem like more than you need, but I promise you’ll find use for all of it.

<img class="" data-credit-name='snapware/amazon‘ data-credit-provider=”custom type” data-caption=”You’ll be thankful you invested in this 30-piece set.” title=”You’ll be thankful you invested in this 30-piece set.” src=”https://i.amz.mshcdn.com/GFaPS3uJEdpmKQeYnqYsTnNHA_Y=/fit-in/1200×9600/https%3A%2F%2Fblueprint-api-production.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fuploads%2Fcard%2Fimage%2F881348%2F13e8e1eb-6bdb-480e-b7dd-5582a21d1b30.png” alt=”You’ll be thankful you invested in this 30-piece set.” data-fragment=”m!a25c” data-image=”https://ift.tt/2PWC9Dw; data-micro=”1″>

You’ll be thankful you invested in this 30-piece set.

But, if you’re convinced it’s just too much for you, you can invest in Snapware’s six- or eight-piece sets instead.

Once you’re fully equipped with an arsenal of food containers, you’ll be ready for pretty much any leftovers situation.

Max Verstappen: Christian Horner defends Red Bull driver after push

news image

The collision on lap 44 led to Verstappen angrily confronting Ocon post-race

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has defended Max Verstappen after he pushed rival driver Esteban Ocon, saying: “Drivers aren’t robots and we don’t want them to be.”

Verstappen confronted Force India’s Ocon following Sunday’s Brazilian Grand Prix after a collision between the pair cost the 21-year-old Dutchman victory.

Governing body the FIA has ordered him to do “two days of public service”.

“I don’t think it got out of hand,” said Horner.

“Through the irresponsible actions of a backmarker we’ve lost a grand prix, and it just wasn’t handled at all well by Ocon. It was totally irresponsible to be racing Max.

“Of course we don’t condone violence in any way but you have to understand that emotions are running very high.”

Verstappen was on course for victory when backmarker Ocon left his car on the inside of the Red Bull at the Senna S and pitched it into a spin.

The incident cleared the way for Lewis Hamilton to secure the 10th victory of his championship-winning campaign, with Verstappen finishing second.

Ocon was hit with a 10-second stop-and-go penalty, the harshest punishment available to the stewards other than disqualification.

“We have seen in other sports that there is interaction between players, and it’s down to the referee to step in and manage that,” said Horner.

“What I don’t know is what words were exchanged, and how Max was antagonised.”

This Stan Lee column from 1968 has a powerful message about racism

Following the death of Marvel comics’ Stan Lee, people have begun recirculating a 1968 column Lee wrote denouncing racism (something a disturbing number of politicians refuse to do to this day).

As part of his storied comics career, Lee spent almost four decades writing regular installments of “Stan’s Soapbox” on the backs of comics, in which he frequently fought for his heroes’ values of tolerance and equality.

“Bigotry and racism are among the deadliest social ills plaguing the world today…It’s totally irrational, patently insane to condemn an entire race — to despise an entire nation — to vilify an entire religion,” Lee wrote. “…Sooner or later, if man is ever to be worthy of his destiny, we must fill out hearts with tolerance.”

Lee himself resurfaced the column in 2017, after white supremacists marched on Charlottesville, resulting in the death of one woman.

In a no-longer-available tweet, he shared the image with the words “As true today as it was in 1968. Pax et Justitia -Stan.” 1968, notably, was the year Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated, among other events.

“Pax et Justitia” is Latin for “peace and justice,” an ideology pervasive in Lee’s comics and in multiple Soapbox columns.

Following the Charlottesville tweet, Inverse dug through the archives and found several more examples of Lee fighting prejudice over the decades. He defended Luke Cage’s debut and pointed out the allegories of bigotry in X-Men, all as part of the heroic stories readers were hungry to consume.

Comic book genius Stan Lee, creator of Spider-Man, dies at 95

news image

Stan Lee, who dreamed up Spider-Man, Iron Man, the Hulk and a cavalcade of other Marvel Comics superheroes that became mythic figures in pop culture with soaring success at the movie box office, died at the age of 95, his daughter said on Monday.

As a writer and editor, Lee was key to the ascension of Marvel into a comic book titan in the 1960s when, in collaboration with artists such as Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, he created superheroes who would enthrall generations of young readers.

“He felt an obligation to his fans to keep creating,” his daughter JC Lee said in a statement to Reuters news agency. “He loved his life and he loved what he did for a living. His family loved him and his fans loved him. He was irreplaceable.”

Lee was declared dead at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, according to Kirk Schenck, an attorney for Lee’s daughter. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Americans were familiar with superheroes before Lee, in part thanks to the 1938 launch of Superman by Detective Comics, the company that would become DC Comics, Marvel’s archrival.

Lee was widely credited with adding a new layer of complexity and humanity to superheroes. They had love and money worries and endured tragic flaws or feelings of insecurity.

“I felt it would be fun to learn a little about their private lives, about their personalities and show that they are human as well as super,” Lee told NPR News in 2010.

He had help in designing the superheroes but he took full ownership of promoting them.

His creations included web-slinging teenager Spider-Man, the muscle-bound Hulk, mutant outsiders The X-Men, the close-knit Fantastic Four and the playboy-inventor Tony Stark, better known as Iron Man.

Dozens of Marvel Comics movies, with nearly all the major characters Lee created, were produced in the first decades of the 21st century, grossing over $20bn at theaters worldwide, according to box office analysts.

Spider-Man is one of the most successfully licensed characters ever.

Lee, as a hired hand at Marvel, received limited payback on the windfall from his characters.

In a 1998 contract, he wrestled a clause for 10 percent of profits from movies and TV shows with Marvel characters.

In 2002, he sued to claim his share, months after “Spider-Man” conquered movie theaters. In a legal settlement three years later, he received a $10m one-time payment.

Hollywood studios made superheroes the cornerstone of their strategy of producing fewer films and relying on big profits from blockbusters. Some people assumed that, as a result, Lee’s wealth had soared. He disputed that.

“I don’t have $200m. I don’t have $150m. I don’t have $100m or anywhere near that,” Lee told Playboy magazine in 2014. Having grown up in the Great Depression, Lee added that he was “happy enough to get a nice paycheck and be treated well”.

In 2008, Lee was awarded the National Medal of Arts, the highest government award for creative artists.

Initially thought comics were a dead-end career

Lee was born as Stanley Martin Lieber in New York on December 28, 1922, the son of Jewish immigrants from Romania.

At age 17, he became an errand boy at Timely Comics, the company that would evolve into Marvel. He got the job with help from an inside connection, his uncle, according to Lee’s autobiography Excelsior!

Lee soon earned writing duties and promotions. He penned Western stories and romances, as well as superhero tales, and often wrote standing on the porch of the Long Island, New York, home he shared with his wife, actress Joan Lee, whom he married in 1947 and who died in 2017.

The couple had two children, Joan Celia born in 1950 and Jan Lee who died within three days of her birth in 1953.

In 1961, Lee’s boss saw a rival publisher’s success with caped crusaders and told Lee to dream up a superhero team.

Lee at the time felt comics were a dead-end career. But his wife urged him to give it one more shot and create the complex characters he wanted to, even if it led to his firing.

The result was the Fantastic Four. There was stretchable Mr Fantastic, his future wife Invisible Woman, her brother the Human Torch and strongman The Thing. They were like a devoted but dysfunctional family.

“Stan’s characters were always superheroes that had a certain amount of humanity about them or a flaw,” said Shirrel Rhoades, a former executive vice president of Marvel and its publisher in the mid-1990s.

“As iconic as Superman may be, he’s considered a Boy Scout. He doesn’t have any real flaws,” Rhoades said. “Whereas you take a Spider-Man, kids identify with him because he had his problems like they did. He suffered from great angst.”

Lee considered the comic-book medium an art form and he was prolific. By some accounts, he came up with a new comic book every day for 10 years.

“I wrote so many I don’t even know. I wrote either hundreds or thousands of them,” he told the Associated Press in 2006.

Lee involved his artists in the process of creating the story and even the characters themselves, in what would come to be known as the “Marvel Method.”

It sometimes led critics to fault Lee for taking credit for ideas not entirely his own.

He described his creative process to Reuters in outlining how he came up with his character Thor, the god of thunder borrowed from Norse mythology.

“I was trying to think of something that would be totally different,” he said. “What could be bigger and even more powerful than the Hulk? And I figured why not a legendary god?”

To give Thor more rhetorical punch, Lee gave him dialogue styled after the Bible and Shakespeare.

As for Tony Stark-Iron Man, he was based on industrialist Howard Hughes, Lee told interviewers.

Stan’s soapbox

Lee became Marvel’s publisher in 1972. He went on the lecture circuit, moved to Los Angeles in 1980 and pursued opportunities for his characters in movies and television.

Through it all, he kept connected with fans, writing a column called “Stan’s Soapbox” in which he often slipped in his catchphrase “‘Nuff Said” or the sign-off “Excelsior!” In his later years, he gave constant updates via Twitter.

“Stan was a character. He was a character as much as any he ever created,” Rhoades said. “He created himself, in a way.”

He also made cameos in most Marvel films, pulling a girl away from falling debris in 2002’s Spider-Man and serving as an emcee at a strip club in 2016’s Deadpool.

The Walt Disney Co bought Marvel Entertainment in 2009 for $4bn in a deal to expand Disney’s roster of characters, with the most iconic ones having been Lee’s handiwork.

By that point, Lee had all but parted ways with Marvel after being made a chairman emeritus of the company. But even in his 80s and 90s, Lee was a wellspring of new projects, running a company called POW! Entertainment.

Recent projects he helped make possible range from the films Black Panther and Doctor Strange to such TV series as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and Guardians of the Galaxy.

“His greatest legacy will be not only the co-creation of his characters but the way he helped to build the culture that comics have become, which is a pretty significant one,” said Robert Thompson, a pop culture expert at Syracuse University.

Emily Blunt on what it’s really like to play Mary Poppins

news image

Https%3a%2f%2fblueprint api production.s3.amazonaws.com%2fuploads%2fvideo uploaders%2fdistribution thumb%2fimage%2f86996%2f9560cef9 535b 4c77 8dac 59169884e25d

Mary Poppins is a woman with a talent for putting things back together again.

Which is why it’s rather apt that after 50 years, she’s returning to our screens at a time when the world is arguably most in need of being put back together.

And, Emily Blunt — who plays Mary Poppins in the upcoming sequel Mary Poppins Returns — is well aware of the impact her character has already had on the lives of those who watched the 1964 movie starring Julie Andrews.

Standing in full Edwardian get-up inside Shepperton Studios, Blunt told Mashable that she has fond memories of watching the film as a child. “The film, for me, and I think for most people, is one of those films that is seared into people’s memory, an emblem of their nostalgia in many ways,” says Blunt.

“That person coming in and so capable and so magical, and just sweeping it all up and making it right.”

“I do remember it very fondly and took such a great comfort in it as a child,” she continued. “That was something that struck me — that person coming in and so capable and so magical, and just sweeping it all up and making it right.”

“So I think we are trying to, obviously, continue that [comfort] now too with our film,” Blunt added.

Blunt hasn’t revisited the film since childhood — not even prior to playing the part. That’s because she’s keen to make the part her own. “I have not watched the original since I saw it as a child, cause I… no one is going to outdo Julie Andrews,” says Blunt. “I think I just want to — this is just going to be my version of her.”

Meryl Streep as Cousin Topsy and Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins.

Meryl Streep as Cousin Topsy and Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins.

So, how has Blunt gone about preparing for this iconic role? Just like she would any other role, Blunt says. “I just try to approach her as I would any other character and not be caught up in the white noise of, ‘Oh my God, you are Mary Poppins.’”

“Meryl just seems to follow me into every film I do. It’s quite creepy at this point.”

“I think that has been my main focus, is just to approach her calmly, as I would any other character, how I would play her, with what I have been given on the page?” Blunt continues.

Meryl Streep — who starred alongside Blunt in The Devil Wears Prada and Into The Woods — also works with her in Mary Poppins Returns — playing Topsy, Mary Poppins’ cousin. “Meryl just seems to follow me into every film I do,” says Blunt. “It’s quite creepy at this point.”

As for her other non-Meryl-Streep co-stars, she has nothing but lovely things to say about them. Blunt describes co-star Lin-Manuel Miranda as “thrilling” and “one of the most positive people” she’s ever met.

“When someone says, ‘Hey, you want to take on Mary Poppins?’ I’m like, ‘Yeah!’ and then you realise that all of your scenes are with children,” says Blunt. “Actually, our kids are particularly brilliant and it’s been wonderful and quite moving to see them grow up in this experience and become real pros.”

She describes working with the actors who play the three Banks children — Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh, and Joel Dawson — as “very moving”. “They have become my closest friends really,” she adds.

Mary Poppins Returns will hit cinemas in the UK on December 21, 2018, and in the U.S. on December 19, 2018.

Cloudflare just dropped a free privacy app for mobile browsing

One less prying eye.
One less prying eye.

Image: Towfiqu Photography / getty

It’s never just between you and your phone.

What you Google in the wee hours of the morning isn’t for your eyes only. Instead, your search queries and history are logged and tracked by a host of companies who likely don’t have your best interests at heart. The web services giant Cloudflare has released a free app for iOS and Android that helps you cut out at least a few of those unwanted prying eyes.

The app, 1.1.1.1, is an extension and simplification of a service Cloudflare began offering in April of 2018: a free, fast, and private DNS resolver.

“Nearly everything on the Internet starts with a DNS request,” explains the 1.1.1.1 webpage. “DNS is the Internet’s directory. Click on a link, open an app, send an email and the first thing your device does is ask the directory: Where can I find this?”

In other words, though you may not realize it, every day you’re on the internet you’re interacting with a DNS server or resolver in some way or another. And companies are watching.

1.1.1.1

Image: screenshot / app store

“Your ISP, and anyone else listening in on the Internet, can see every site you visit and every app you use — even if their content is encrypted,” Cloudflare adds. “Creepily, some DNS providers sell data about your Internet activity or use it to target you with ads.”

The 1.1.1.1 app does an end run around this by creating a secure connection for your phone.

“We will never log your IP address (the way other companies identify you),” notes Cloudflare. “And we’re not just saying that. We’ve retained KPMG to audit our systems annually to ensure that we’re doing what we say.”

Again, this is all offered totally free to the user. As an added bonus, the company claims that running the app on your phone will likely make internet queries faster on your device.

Importantly, downloading and running 1.1.1.1 does not mean that no one is snooping on your web browsing. It does, however, make it harder for some companies to do so.

Hey, just because a victory is small doesn’t mean it’s unimportant. A step in the right direction is better than no steps at all.

‘Profoundly dismayed’: Amnesty strips Suu Kyi of top honour

news image

Amnesty International has stripped Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi of its highest honour over her “indifference” to the atrocities committed by the country’s military against the Muslim-majority Rohingya.

The UK-based human rights group on Monday said it was revoking the Ambassador of Conscience Award it gave Aung San Suu Kyi in 2009 during her 15-year house arrest.

“Today, we are profoundly dismayed that you no longer represent a symbol of hope, courage, and the undying defence of human rights,” Amnesty chief Kumi Naidoo said in a letter to Aung San Suu Kyi released by the group.

“Amnesty International cannot justify your continued status as a recipient of the Ambassador of Conscience award and so, with great sadness we are hereby withdrawing it from you.”

The group said it informed Myanmar’s leader of the decision on Sunday. She has so far issued no public response.

Once hailed as a champion in the fight for democracy, Aung San Suu Kyi has been stripped of a series of international honours over a Rohingya exodus that began in August 2017.

More than 720,000 Rohingya fled the Buddhist majority’s western Rakhine state in a military crackdown since August last year, with most seeking refuge in neighbouring Bangladesh.

Many are believed to have been either murdered or tortured and raped.

Controversial tenure

Aung San Suu Kyi and her National League for Democracy (NLD) party swept to power in 2015 in a landslide victory ending decades of military rule in the southeast Asian country of around 50 million.

But her tenure has been marred by a failure to speak up for Rohingya, who were driven out of the country by the army in what the United Nations has called an ethnic cleansing campaign.

Aung San Suu Kyi‘s administration rejected the UN findings as one-sided, and said the military action was engaged in a legitimate operation against armed rebels.

Last month, the 73-year-old was stripped of her honourary Canadian citizenship over her failure to speak up for the Rohingya.

In March, the US Holocaust Memorial Museum rescinded its top award while other honours, including the freedom of the cities of Dublin and Oxford, England, were also withdrawn.

She has also lost numerous smaller awards from individual universities and local and regional governments.

In 1991, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, which many of her critics have also called to be withdrawn. The Swedish foundation that oversees the award has refused.
