Drake Had Three No. 1s This Year — What Does That Mean For The Future?

news image

As ever, Drake remained inescapable in 2018. His vicious beef with Pusha T ended in an atomic dis track and the revelation of a secret son. He also helped orchestrate four wildly viral music videos with young visionary director Karena Evans. All that matters.

But radio matters, too. As one of music’s steadiest avenues for repeated exposure, it remains a substantial part of the rapper’s lasting dominance over pop culture. Drake has now obliterated enough streaming records to essentially make platforms like Spotify and Apple Music into his playgrounds (e.g. his 2017 album mixtape playlist More Life). But radio? That’s Drake’s old standby. And both radio and streaming factor into chart performance.

“We’ve seen hip-hop have great chart runs before, especially in the early to mid-2000s. Then, American Idol came along and pop had a resurgence,” Gary Trust, Billboard‘s co-director of charts, told MTV News in an email. “Still, this year saw a record 34 consecutive weeks of rap hits at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 – three of those songs by Drake, accounting for 29 of those weeks – and with streaming being a major chart metric, and streaming being dominated by hip-hop, the sound does not seem in danger of disappearing. Plus, many current artists of multiple genres grew up influenced heavily by hip-hop.”

Case in point: Only 19 days into the year, Drake released “God’s Plan,” which you’ve now heard over 600 times (alongside “Diplomatic Immunity,” which you haven’t). “God’s Plan” predictably blew up, bolstered by $996,631.90 of visual philanthropy and relentless radio play. Both quickly helped Drake achieve his first Hot 100 No. 1 of the year. And somehow, that was just the start.

In fact, here at the year’s end, Drake boasts two additional No. 1s — “Nice for What” and “In My Feelings” — bringing his career total to six. That means half of them dropped this year alone. Of those three, “God’s Plan” and “In My Feelings” spent double digits at the top of the chart, joining 2017 juggernaut hits like Luis Fonsi’s “Despacito” and Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You.”

“Drake has always shown off different sides to his music, from the start, having arrived rapping on ‘Best I Ever Had’ and singing, really nicely, on ‘Find Your Love,’” Trust said. “Almost a decade later, that formula continues to work, for him and others, as ‘God’s Plan’ and ‘In My Feelings’ update the best of ‘Had’ and ‘Find,’ respectively. That combination of rapping and singing helps bridge audiences and, thus, translates to chart success.”

This is a lot of analysis, but it helps elucidate just how influential Drake remains a decade or so into his career. In April, after “God’s Plan” had been No. 1 for 11 weeks, it finally got bumped out of the top spot, naturally by Drake himself and “Nice for What.” The dude’s hits are so big that he can replace himself at the top of the charts, becoming part of an elite class of just 12 other recording acts to have achieved the feat, including Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, and The Beatles.

A big part of how this happens, as Trust said, is what those songs actually sound like. While the airy “God’s Plan” kept a fundamentally trap skeleton (in line with much contemporary rap), “Nice for What” and “In My Feelings” delved into New Orleans bounce; the latter video even acted as a love letter to the city itself.

Drake paired each new song with a dynamic visual, the kind that makes a hell of a case for the continued existence of music videos in general. A major part of his visual identity in 2018 was Evans, the 22-year-old director whose clips with Drake vibrate with life and portraiture. After giving away a million dollars in Miami as part of “God’s Plan,” Drake retreated out of frame so that Evans’s “Nice for What” could come alive as an ode to strong women. By the time “In My Feelings” dropped in August, the song had already blown up thanks to Shiggy’s challenge. All Drake had to do was show up wearing gold grills and charm his way out of a contentious encounter with Phylicia Rashad. Of course, the dude did. And his canny strategizing essentially guaranteed each song’s coronation as an Event instead of just another single.

As if right on cue, Drake’s achievements kept rolling in even as 2018 winded to a close. Tuesday (December 4) brought the news that he was both Spotify’s most-streamed artist of the year — and with 8.2 billion new listens in 2018 alone, also the platform’s most-streamed artist ever — as well as Billboard‘s artist of the year. He also claimed that same title from Apple Music.

Let’s not forget either that, the day before, the rapper had hit No. 1 again, this time as a featured guest on Travis Scott’s “Sicko Mode.” Notably, the song is the first No. 1 for Scott, and Drake’s fourth appearance at the top this year. “Sicko Mode” is one of the biggest songs of the year, so it only makes sense that it dethroned another humongous, year-defining song in Ariana Grande’s “Thank U, Next.”

But there’s something just as potent in “Sicko Mode,” whether it’s Scott’s oblique mention of his maybe-wife Kylie Jenner or, who knows, maybe even Drake’s “I did half a Xan, 13 hours ’til I land.” He’s long been a meme, after all.

That’s just what you have to do. Drake’s known it for years. In 2018, it paid off with three mammoth No. 1s. Next year, however, nothing will be guaranteed. Drake’s reign, Trust stressed, may be short-lived given how cyclical the trends represented on the chart tend to be.

“The end of the year has seen pop and rock make a bit of a comeback, thanks to Panic! at the Disco’s ‘High Hopes’ and Marshmello and Bastille’s ‘Happier,’ among others,” he said. “And, even amid Drake’s dominance, a country/pop hit reached No. 2 on the Hot 100: Bebe Rexha and Florida Georgia Line’s ‘Meant to Be.’ There’s always room for a catchy pop hook.”

People really loved bean burritos in 2018, according to Grubhub

news image

Looks like a lot of you snubbed carnitas in 2018. According to year-end data from Grubhub, the food that experienced the biggest surge on the delivery platform this year was the bean burrito.

Notably, the 2018 list featured zero red meat, although chicken made a strong showing. Of the top 10 items, which Grubhub defines as the items that surged the most, five were chicken: chicken slider (#3), chicken burrito (#5), chicken sandwich (#6), chicken and waffle slider (#8), and parmesan chicken (#9).

There were also two cauliflower entries — cauliflower rice bowl (#7) and buffalo cauliflower (ew, #10) — as well as one pork entry (baby back pork rib at #4) and one seafood entry (the ever-popular poke bowl at #2). We have long been skeptical of the delivery poke bowl — why not just go eat a fresh one? — but it looks like our fellow orderers do not agree.

GrubHub also released breakfast and late night lists, which feel a little more “wow, very unnerving that this company keeps data on the gyro I ate at 4am.” They’re pretty unsurprising, although we do appreciate the gastric bravery of people eating stuffed jalapeños (#1 on the late-night list) and spicy miso ramen (#2) right before going to sleep.

And congrats to French toast for appearing on both the late night and breakfast lists. French toast, we always knew you could do it.

The 2019 Golden Globe Nominations Are Here — See The Full List

news image

There can be 100 people in a room, and 99 won’t care about awards season, but all it takes is the one person who does. And now that the 2019 Golden Globe nominations are here, it’s time to get down to business.

It’s no surprise that Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born sashayed away with five noms, all in key categories — including Best Picture, Drama; Best Actor and Best Director for Cooper; and Best Actress for Lady Gaga. The singer-songwriter’s been embracing her Hollywood moment since premiering the film on the festival circuit earlier this year to critical acclaim and internet fervor, but she also scored a nomination for Best Original Song for “Shallow” — a song that no one will be able to get out of their heads until February.

But it’s Adam McKay’s Dick Cheney satire, Vice, that received the most noms, despite the fact that the public still hasn’t seen it and it only started screening for critics a week ago. But the Hollywood Foreign Press Association loves a blistering comedy starring A-list movie stars like Christian Bale and Amy Adams (who hopefully turns this nod into a real shot at the Oscar gold that’s been evading her for 12 years).

This year’s show will also mark the awards season return of the internet’s favorite boyfriend, Timothée Chalamet. The 22-year-old landed a supporting nom for his haunting performance in Beautiful Boy, while Hollywood’s other favorite boy, Lucas Hedges, scored a Best Actor nom for his work in Boy Erased.

Lady Bird’s exes are thriving, but Saoirse Ronan’s lead performance in Mary Queen of Scots — and the entire female-led film — was snubbed, in favor for another film about women, power, and royalty: Yorgos Lanthimos’s The Favourite, which landed five nods.

When it comes to surprises, however, the category is… Pose. Ryan Murphy’s critically lauded series about New York City ball culture in the 1980s, starring a predominantly trans cast, landed two noms in the TV categories, including the top prize. So now you know this Golden Globes red carpet is going to be fierce.

Anyway, if you want to ace your office Oscar pool this February, the Golden Globes are a good place to start, as the winners of these awards typically garner some much-needed awards season momentum. Hosted by Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg — a real dream team — the 2019 Golden Globes will air live on NBC on Sunday, January 6, 2019. Check out the full list of nominees below:

China demands release of Huawei executive arrested in Canada

news image

China is demanding the release of a Huawei executive who was in Canada.

Canadian law enforcement detained Huawei Technologies’ chief financial officer, Meng Wanhzou, in Vancouver, British Columbia, on Dec. 1. Meng, the daughter of Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei, is facing extradition charges to the United States over accusations that she violated Iran sanctions.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs both Canada and the U.S. to release Meng. In its statement, a Ministry spokesperson demanded that the two countries “effectively protect the legitimate rights and interests of the person concerned.”

The Chinese embassy in Canada has also released a strongly worded statement.

“At the request of the U.S. side, the Canadian side arrested a Chinese citizen not violating any American or Canadian law. The Chinese side firmly opposes and strongly protests over such kind of actions, which seriously harmed the human rights of the victim. The Chinese side has lodged stern representations with the U.S. and Canadian side, and urged them to immediately correct the wrongdoing and restore the personal freedom of Ms. Meng Wanzhou. We will closely follow the development of the issue and take all measures to resolutely protect the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese citizens.

Huawei’s relationship with the United States has long been rocky.

At the beginning of the year, the company’s planned entrance into the U.S. phone market was derailed. Wireless carriers such as and cancelled plans to sell Huawei phones due to U.S. government. Intelligence officials labeled the company as a national security threat, fearing its smartphones could be used by the Chinese government to spy on the U.S. Just this past August, Donald Trump banning U.S. government agencies from buying smartphones and other products from the Chinese electronics manufacturer.

Huawei CFO Meng’s bail hearing is currently scheduled for Friday, Dec. 7.

Hands on with Apple Watch’s ECG and irregular heart rhythm features

news image

The Apple Watch Series 4’s transformation from miniature iPhone and fitness tracker to medical device is now complete with the release of the ECG (electrocardiogram) app and irregular heart rhythm notifications.

The two heart-related features were introduced at the revamped smartwatch’s debut in September and are now finally available via a software update.

The ECG app is exclusive to the Apple Watch Series 4 as electrocardiogram readings need the electrodes built into both the heart rate monitor on the backside and within the Digital Crown to create a reading.

The irregular heart rhythm notifications (IHR) feature, however, only uses the optical heart rate sensor, and is therefore compatible with all Apple Watches from Series 4 going back to Series 1 (not to be confused with the original Apple Watch which is technically “Series 0”).

Apple gave me a preview of the ECG app and irregular heart rhythm notifications feature pre-loaded onto a Series 4 loaner unit so I could see for myself how they worked.

Of course, I couldn’t properly test whether the features would be life-saving or not since my heart’s healthy. Still, having the two features accessible from my wrist fulfills the device’s promise as a wearable companion that’s got my back if I were to notice unusual symptoms or signs that could be related to heart problems.

The most important thing to understand about both new heart-related features is that they’re — Apple can’t stress this enough – not replacements for a doctor. Nor do they make the Apple Watch some kind of holy grail wearable capable of detecting if you’ve got a heart attack or stroke.

Rather, both Apple Watch features are there to detect signs of atrial fibrillation (AFib), an irregular beating of the heart. If an ECG reading shows an irregular heart beat pattern or the IHR notifications thinks something isn’t right, that’s a suggestion and gentle nudge to check in with your physician. They’re by no means a definitive diagnosis of any heart condition.

Making sure Apple Watch users understand what the ECG readings and IHR notifications do and don’t do and translating the complicated medical terminologies associated with heart issues was a top priority for Apple.

Apple makes it easy to understand what an ECG is with plain English.

You should definitely read up on what everything means.

Setting up both features happens within Apple’s Health app on iOS. In typical Apple fashion, it walks you through how to use the ECG app on your Apple Watch and explains in plain English terms like sinus rhythm and atrial fibrillation, and the various readouts for what they could possibly suggest.

Tapping on “learn more” link button expands each section with more details and at first I was tempted to tap through to quickly complete the setup, but I decided not to. Because why even bother turning these features on if you don’t care to understand how your heart works and what the readouts might mean? You owe it to yourself to read through the various setup sections if you care about your heart health.

Taking and understanding your ECG

Taking an ECG on an Apple Watch Series 4 is quite easy: simply launch the ECG app and place your finger on the Digital Crown and a 30-second timer will count down.

For the best results, you’ll want to make sure your Apple Watch is snug on your wrist so the crystal heart rate sensor on the back accurately detecting your pulse and also have your arm rested on a table.

It's so easy!

It’s so easy!

Image: screenshot: raymond wong/mashable

Once finished, you’ll get one of four different results: sinus rhythm, atrial fibrillation, low or high heart rate, or inconclusive.

If your heart’s operating normally, it’ll likely get a sinus rhythm result indicating “the upper and lower chambers of your heart are beating in sync” according to the Health app.

An atrial fibrillation result suggests your heart’s beating irregularly could be a sign of arrhythmia and you should probably visit your physician to find out if it’s something more serious.

A low or high heart rate result happens when your heart rate is either under 50 BPM (beats per minute) or over 120 BPM. In these cases, the Apple Watch’s sensors simply can’t check for atrial fibrillation and Apple considers the reading “inconclusive.”

Inconclusive readouts simply mean they couldn’t be classified, and could have been from improperly taking the ECG (see recommended tips above). An inconclusive readout doesn’t mean nothing is wrong.

You shouldn't take an ECG every day.

You shouldn’t take an ECG every day.

Regardless of what ECG result you get when you take it, again, it’s not definitive. Symptoms such as fatigue or shortness of breath or chest tightness could impact the result and as such, the ECG app gives you a list of symptom options to add to each reading. These are stored together with the detailed ECG charts within the Health app.

Also important to note: You shouldn’t take an ECG all the time. While it might be comforting to get an ECG daily, Apple doesn’t want to put people in a state of paranoia or panic; it should only be used if you have symptoms that you think might impact your heart rhythm. Moreover, taking too many ECGs can actually create more false positives and false negatives, leading to inaccurate results over time.

A PDF export of one of my ECG readings.

A PDF export of one of my ECG readings.

Image: raymond wong/mashable

ECG readings in the Health app are presented in a graph that Apple says is familiar to physicians. In my briefing on the ECG app, I got the sense Apple wants patients to build a closer relationship with their healthcare providers.

For example, the ability to export your ECG readout as PDF and send it to your doctor or print it out to show them during a visit isn’t common yet, but it might be in the future. It gives some control back to the patient, but at the same time allows both patient and doctor to have a more informed overview of the patient’s health.

That said — in maybe what’s now sounding like somewhat of an annoying reminder — the Apple Watch’s ECG readout is only a single-lead ECG as opposed to the 12-lead ECGs used by hospital or doctor’s offices. The latter looks at your heart rhythm from multiple views (one for each of the connected leads) and can detect heart attacks.

If the Apple Watch ECG shows AFib, the responsibility is on the individual to get it further checked on by a physician and perhaps take a more advanced ECG reading.

Irregular heart rhythm notifications work in the background and supports Series 1-4.

Irregular heart rhythm notifications work in the background and supports Series 1-4.

There’s not a whole lot to say about the irregular heart rhythm notifications since I couldn’t get any data on it from my test Apple Watch.

Unlike an ECG, IHR notifications work in the background and only send an alert “if an irregular rhythm is detected on five rhythm checks over a minimum of 65 minutes.”

It’s still really early days for the Apple Watch’s medical ambitions, but it’s already looking promising. The American Heart Association published a white paper of preclinical studies that took a look at the effectiveness of using an Apple Watch for ECGs and IHR notifications. The results suggest the smartwatch is highly accurate in detecting signs of AFib.

As the Apple Watch’s sensors improve, heart and medical readouts will only get better and more accurate.

ECG and IHR notifications doesn’t mean we don’t need doctors anymore. Rather, it’s like having a guardian on your wrist — you’ll be glad it’s there if anything bad happens.

Both features will be available in a software update for watchOS starting today.

‘Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’ is the perfect celebration of ‘Smash’

news image

There’s a certain beauty to Super Smash Bros., a beauty that has sustained itself over 19 years and five games, a beauty that transcends the fighting game genre, a beauty that weaves its way into every facet of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is, as its name suggests, the ultimate expression of Super Smash Bros., bringing together every single character, item, and stage from games past into a single, spectacular title that simultaneously embraces everything that has come before it and throws in just enough new additions to make it fresh.

Super Smash Bros. is a celebration of Nintendo, its video games, and dozens of other iconic games that have made their way onto various Nintendo platforms over the years. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a celebration of that celebration.

And what a celebration it is.

Isabelle is here to kick ass.

Isabelle is here to kick ass.

At a press preview event for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in New York City, about three weeks before Ultimate‘s release date, I played the game for the first time. I jumped in with a group of other members of the press, only one of whom I was familiar with, and immediately sunk right in.

There’s something about Super Smash Bros. that can bring people together

Part of the fun of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is that anyone has a chance of winning a standard game. With anywhere between two and eight players dashing around a single stage and items dropping in to mix things up left and right, the tides of battle can change at a moment’s notice, regardless of how much experience any single player has in Smash.

Over several matches, I came in first, second, third, and fourth playing with a handful of strangers and acquaintances, but the entire time I was playing I never stopped having fun.

At one point I approached one of the various Smash setups in the room and asked if I could jump in with the two players who were battling each other. Above their characters were the custom names “Nairo” and “alf,” names of competitive Smash players. Nairoby “Nairo” Quezada is one of the best Super Smash Bros. 4 players in the world.

I played a handful of matches with them (never taking first place) and had a blast even though they were leagues better than I could ever hope to be.

There’s something about Super Smash Bros. that can bring people together. Its blend of simple, and approachable mechanics, colorful cast of characters, and competitive nature is absolutely magnetic.

It’s the kind of series that can build friendships. It can bring strangers together. It can inspire people to come together after months of not seeing each other.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate continues this tradition.

New touches

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate brings enough new touches to make everything feel fresh but not overburdened.

There are the new characters, of course, with fighters like King K. Rool from Donkey Kong, Ridley from Metroid, Inklings from Splatoon, and Simon from Castlevania making their first appearances. Many of the new characters are completely novel experiences in the series with unique moves that shake up the meta.

And then there are the echo fighters, like Daisy and Dark Samus, which pretty much work the same mechanically as their counterparts (Peach and Samus, respectively) but with a different character design.

Dark Samus plays just like regular Samus, but a little floatier.

Dark Samus plays just like regular Samus, but a little floatier.

New stages are a given in Smash as well, and the collection of new stages in Ultimate have all the life and color that we’ve come to expect. A couple of highlights are Dracula’s Castle from Castlevania and New Donk City Hall from Super Mario Odyssey that climbs up and down the Empire State-like city hall.

It doesn’t do anything to take away from the formula

Nintendo also saw fit to include hundreds of songs from the various games represented in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, including tons of new remixes of classic tunes. When selecting your stage, you can choose the music that plays in the background, or even just peruse the library and make your own playlists of songs to listen to while the Switch screen is off.

One of the biggest additions is the single player adventure, World of Light, which is a fun shake-up for Smash that takes the usual battles players are used to and adds different elements to them like floors covered in fire, enemies that are extra large, or other changes. The more you play, the more spirits you get, which augment your fighter with things like increased attack power, extra jumps, and starting with particular items.

Charizard is imbued with the spirit of Valoo from 'The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.'

The ultimate Smash

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is another Smash game. It doesn’t do anything to take away from the formula like Brawl did when it added a feature that made characters occasionally trip. It doesn’t add anything crazy that makes it feel like a completely new game.

But that’s not really what anyone is looking for. Smash fans want to play Smash, and when a new one comes out, they don’t want a bunch of extra bells and whistles or a reinvention of the game they already love.

In that sense, because Super Smash Bros. Ultimate doesn’t stray wildly from the formula, but simply gives Smash a visual upgrade and a few new fighters and stages and modes, it’s perfect.

'Ultimate' is so delightfully fun.

‘Ultimate’ is so delightfully fun.

It has your favorite stage because it has every stage. It has your favorite fighter because it has every fighter. It is the ultimate expression of Nintendo’s delightful take on the fighting game genre because it doesn’t muck up what makes the best parts of the series so great.

From what I’ve played over a couple dozen hours, the game seems airtight. No bugs. No annoyances. No character that seems wildly overpowered. Of course, I’m not a professional Smash player so I can’t look at it from that critical lens, but it feels good to me.

In my experience as a casual-yet-passionate player, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is exceptional in every way.

OnePlus is making a 5G phone, but it won’t be cheap

news image

Here’s a fact about 5G phones you probably didn’t think about: They’ll be expensive — at least at first.

According to OnePlus CEO Pete Lau, who spoke with The Verge, OnePlus is indeed working on a 5G phone, but it’ll cost $200 to $300 more than the company’s upcoming 4G flagship phone.

Lau didn’t share any more details — “there’s a lot of specifics still to look at,” he said — but it sounds like OnePlus just can’t make the 5G phone as cheap as it’d like to, so it’s switched to working on two flagships in parallel, something the company hasn’t done before.

Another reason might be the phone’s looks. Due to the antenna design required for 5G, Lau says it “appears impossible to make a nice-looking flagship device, for now.”

We do know some details about the company’s 5G phone from an earlier announcement. It’ll launch in Europe first, on EE’s network, and it will sport Qualcomm’s latest and greatest Snapdragon 855 processor. No exact release date has been set.

But why launch a 5G phone at all if it’s going to be that expensive? According to Lau, it’s about learning about the technology and how best to integrate it into a phone before it becomes commonplace.

Lau’s comments give us some idea of how much other 5G phones will cost when they hit the market. Most major smartphone makers (with the probable exception of Apple) are planning to launch a 5G phone next year, but if you want those mind-boggling data transfer speeds, expect to pay a couple hundred bucks extra.

In the age of the internet, you don’t necessarily need a best-selling book series to land a film deal.

Sometimes a collection of viral Reddit posts will do the job.

On Wednesday, Variety broke the news that Ryan Reynolds will be producing The Patient Who Nearly Drove Me Out of Medicine — a horror story based on a series originally published by writer Jasper DeWitt on Reddit’s r/nosleep sub.

Reynolds has since retweeted the story, and DeWitt has also posted about it.

DeWitt originally posted his story as a nine-part series, the first instalment of which was published on r/nosleep in December 2016. The posts have been upvoted thousands of times, and received hundreds of comments.

For anyone unfamiliar with NoSleep, the community describes itself as “a place for realistic horror stories”. Posters share fiction, mostly written in first person, which other users then comment on as if the stories shared really took place.

“Everything is true here, even if it’s not,” reads a line in the community details.

DeWitt’s story is still available to read on the sub:

NoSleep currently has close to 13 million subscribers, and this wouldn’t be the first time fiction posted there has gone on to be published or adapted.

One of the most famous examples of this is Penpal, a novel by Dathan Auerbach that also began as a serialisation. After the story went viral on Reddit, Auerbach raised close to $16,000 via Kickstarter in order to turn the story into a book.

Judging by the fact Auerbach’s second novel has recently been published by Doubleday, DeWitt could well have bright things in his future.

Mashable has reached out to DeWitt, and Reynolds’ representatives, for comment.

The best queer moments in culture in 2018

news image

2018 has been a banner year for hot queer people on television. Growing up as a queer kid, this was kind of all I ever wanted (besides being accepted for “who I was,” blah blah blah).

But that’s the not the only form of progress. Wherever you look (that’s not the Trump White House), queer people have been making headway — in Congress, film, music, theater, and on social media.

The queers are taking over, and for good.

Just look at all the strangely uplifting facts before us: Queer and trans people had a record-shattering year on television. They broke absurd amounts of ground in government. They made some charmingly slubby and kind cis men look handsome and good.

In the midst of this apocalypse, we had Janelle Monaé and Tessa Thompson locking eyes in hot pink vagina couture.

Here are the best queer moments in culture in 2018.

1. America elected its first queer Native American ex-MMA fighter to Congress.

Congratulations to Sharice Davids, the first openly queer elected official from Kansas, and the first Native American woman elected to Congress. Plus, she’s got guns (the good kind).

2. Janelle Monaé’s black, queer, feminist, sci-fi dystopia, “PYNK,” came out.

Who cares what Kanye West thinks about anything when you have videos like this one?

3. Disobedience, one of the first films to ever depict lesbian sex accurately, came out.

They swapped spit, and it was extremely graphic and good.

4. There were two movies about conversion therapy this year, and only one of them was painfully corny.

The Miseducation of Cameron Post is nostalgic and thoughtful. Boy Erased is a movie.

5. King Princess and Amandla Stenberg became the most delightful example of queer young adult love.

How often do we see celebrity queer couples in the public eye, forget young adults? These two have great politics, a tender relationship, and wonderful fashion, especially for Los Angeles, where things can easily go sideways. For god’s sake, they’re currently reading Price of Salt together. Go to Instagram and watch them like each other’s posts and support one another in the comments.

Known as the “lesbian Jesus,” “Queero” Kiyoko had a groundbreaking year in music. Not only did she win MTV’s Push Award, given to socially conscious artists who make progressive change, she accepted it with this line: “This validates any queer woman of color, that you can follow your dreams.”

Her debut studio album this year, Expectations, won critical acclaim and plenty of Instagram likes from one of the toughest critics in the industry (me).

7. It was a banner year for bisexual lighting.

Sometime in 2014, bisexual lighting, characterized by neon blue and pink light, became a meme on Twitter. The meme was borne out of an episode of the BBC’s Sherlock where Watson appears to express homosexual desires for Holmes, all while bathed in pink and blue light. Pink and blue are colors of the bisexual flag.

We saw a lot of that lighting this year, including in the movie poster for Black Panther and in Janelle Monaé’s music videos for Dirty Computer.

8. Adam Rippon and Gus Kenworthy were very out and very proud at the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Rippon was America’s first openly gay ice skater to perform at the Olympics. He turned down an invitation to meet with notorious homophobe Mike Pence, then heading the U.S. delegation. Both Kenworthy and Rippon treated us to a lot of adorable queer-affirming selfies and biting jokes on Twitter.

9. The country elected its first openly bisexual senator, Krysten Sinema.

Democrat Krysten Sinema will be representing Arizona and all the queer government nerds desperate for representation.

10. Notorious anti-same-sex marriage county clerk Kim Davis lost her election to a Democrat.

Davis became famous among the Mike Huckabee set after she refused to sign marriage licenses for same-sex couples. In the 2018 election she lost to Democratic challenger Elwood Caudill Jr., by about 650 votes.

11. A Fantastic Woman, a movie about a trans woman in Chile, won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

The movie’s star, Daniela Vega, was also the first openly trans presenter in Oscars history.

Jacobson came out in an interview with Vanity Fair while promoting her movie 6 Balloons. She’s bi, and she appears to be a great person. What a combo.

13. Ronan Farrow came out as a member of the LGBTQ community.

The man responsible for some of the New Yorker‘s best scoops and basically anything good on Twitter came out in a speech at an LGBTQ awards ceremony.

14. Kristen Stewart and Chloe Sevigny played lesbian serial killers in love.

They both starred in Lizzie, the movie about the infamous, supposedly queer Lizzie Borden, rumored to have killed her parents with her maid and lover, Bridget.

Was the movie good? No, it was awful and monumentally tedious. I nearly fell asleep during the murder scene.

Still, I’m so here for queer romance on screen, especially when one of those actresses is actually queer.

15. LGBTQ people had a record-shattering year in television.

According to a GLAAD report, 2018 was the best year yet for LGBTQ characters on broadcast television. The report found 8.8 percent of all regularly occurring characters on broadcast TV to be LGBTQ. And 50 percent of LGBTQ network regulars are now people of color.

16. Pose put together the largest cast of openly trans actors to ever appear on television.

The show, which features a record five actors, tells the story of New York City’s ballroom scene in the 1980s. It’s deliciously weepy and good.

17. The Favourite came out, the second queer movie this year for Rachel Weisz.

A soon-to-be Academy Award-winning queer period drama? Yes, please!

18. The Queer Eye guys made America a better place.

Queer Eye is the best thing to happen to toxic masculinity since forever. This season’s cast was particularly woke, kind, and tender. They went deep into the heart of red America and brought out the best of that place.

For that, and for everything else on this list, we should be grateful. Here’s to an even more magically queer 2019.

‘Hotline Bling’ mashed up with ‘Hark the Herald Angels Sing’ actually works

news image

Carols don’t really go with much, except the holidays.

But surprisingly, the lyrics of Drake’s 2016 hit “Hotline Bling” seem to go pretty well with the melody of Christmas carol “Hark the Herald Angels Sing.”

Twitter user Becca Rose posted a video of herself singing the mashup, which she said was discovered in a Tumblr post

And hey, you know what, it really does go well together.

It’s all about the syllables, which at the right section of each song measures up perfectly.

Of course, this isn’t such a rare thing: Remember that guy who mashed up the tune of Adele’s “Hello,” as well as other popular songs, to the lyrics of “All Star” by Smash Mouth?

Sorry to remind you.
