The Houston Texans announced that founder and owner Robert McNair died Friday in Houston. He was 81.

According to the Houston Chronicle, McNair had been fighting skin cancer for several years.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce Houston Texans Founder, Senior Chairman and Chief Executive Officer and philanthropist, Robert C. McNair passed away peacefully in Houston today with his loving wife, Janice, and his family by his side,” the Texans said in a statement.

McNair was a longtime Houston businessman and the founder of Cogen Technologies, which he sold in 1999. He led the charge to bring pro football back to Houston, and in 1999, the NFL awarded him an expansion team. Professional football officially returned to the city with the 2002 inaugural season.

Former President George H.W. Bush, a longtime McNair friend and fellow Texan, reflected on McNair’s life in a tweet on Friday, writing: “Bob McNair wasn’t just the brightest Point of Light in Houston; he was one of the kindest and most generous people anywhere. Nobody cared — or helped people — more, and that’s just one of the reasons I will always be proud Bob was my good friend.”

After tech issues affect streaming for ‘The Match,’ Comcast says it will issue refunds

news image

Phil Mickelson’s 22-hole victory over Tiger Woods on Friday seemingly had enough drama to justify the $20 price tag to watch “The Match.” But there was a problem: An issue with the interface for B/R Live – the Turner Sports property that produced the $9 million winner-take-all golf event – cropped up before Mickelson and Woods teed off. As a result, “The Match” was made available to anyone who could stream it.

Comcast, the nation’s largest cable carrier, said in a statement to USA TODAY Sports on Friday night that it would issue refunds.

“Comcast will proactively issue a $19.99 credit to any Xfinity TV customer who purchased ‘The Match’ pay-per-view event,” the statement read. “We hope Turner and Bleacher Report will do the same given that the event was made available by them for free on The Bleacher Report website.”

B/R Live, in a statement to USA TODAY Sports, said “technical issues” affected access.

The statement read: “We experienced some technical issues on B/R Live that temporarily impacted user access to ‘The Match.’ We took a number of steps to resolve the matter, with our main priority being the delivery of content to those that purchased the PPV event.”

“The Match” was available via B/R Live apps on various streaming platforms such as Apple TV, Google Chromecast and Roku, and through the B/R Live website. It was also offered through many cable and satellite providers.

MORE: The Match: Phil Mickelson finally beats Tiger Woods after 22 holes for $9 million prize

MORE: The Match: Hole-by-hole

Nicholas Masafumi Watanabe, a sport and entertainment management professor at the University of South Carolina, told USA TODAY Sports that The Match would have needed about 700,000 buys to break even. That number likely took a hit due to the technical issues.

“I think that these media companies have to realize there is a risk in holding PPV events,” Watanabe told USA TODAY Sports. “If there is not enough investment into infrastructure and bandwidth needed to stream these events, there is the possibility that consumers may be less-inclined to purchase PPV in the future.”

Turner Sports is a new entry into the pay-per-view game, although other prominent players in the segment have suffered similar issues.

UFC and the streaming partner it has since purchased, NeuLion, faced a class-action lawsuit after fans who purchased the $100 Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Conor McGregor boxing match were unable to watch the fight. That lawsuit was settled earlier this year, and it allowed up to a full refund to those who signed on to be part of the class action.

DAZN, a streaming service led by former ESPN president John Skipper, had trouble streaming NFL games in Canada and professional soccer in Japan, Watanabe said. It launched in the U.S. earlier this year with eyes on challenging Showtime PPV and HBO PPV in boxing, and it has secured many international streaming rights.

Bahrain holds elections with ban on opposition groups

news image

Bahrainis are heading to the polls on Saturday in a parliamentary election from which opposition groups have been barred in a crackdown on dissent in the Western-allied kingdom as tensions with the Shia Muslim opposition show no signs of abating.

Activists have called for a boycott of what they describe as “farce” elections, raising doubts about the credibility of the polls. The government says the elections are democratic.

The polls opened at 8am local time (05:00 GMT) and are set to close at 8pm.

Bahrain‘s Sunni-Muslim ruling Al Khalifa family has kept a lid on dissent since the Shia opposition staged a failed uprising in 2011. Saudi Arabia sent in troops to help crush the unrest in a mark of concern that any power-sharing concession by Bahrain could inspire Saudi Arabia’s own Shia minority.

Riyadh regards the neighbouring island nation, which does not possess vast oil wealth like other Gulf states, as a critical ally in its proxy wars with Iran in the Middle East.

Bahrain, which is home to the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet, has closed the main opposition groups, barred their members from running in elections and prosecuted scores of people, many described by human rights groups as activists, in mass trials.

“Clearly, legislatures from the world’s leading democratic states believe that the upcoming election in Bahrain lacks legitimacy. You simply cannot crush, torture and imprison your entire opposition, call for a pseudo-election, and then demand the respect of the international community,” said Sayed Ahmed Alwadaei, director of the UK-based Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy (BIRD).

The government said 506 candidates are running in the election, including the highest number of female candidates. It expects a higher voter turnout than in 2014, which it put at 53 percent, when opposition groups boycotted the elections.

Only 23, out of 40 incumbents of the House of Representatives, are seeking re-election this year to parliament, which has limited powers.

Many of Bahrain’s Shia say they are deprived of jobs and government services and treated as second class citizens in the country of 1.5 million.

The authorities deny the allegations and accuse Iran of fostering unrest that has seen demonstrators clash with security forces, who have been targeted by several bomb attacks. Tehran denies the allegations.

Bahrain emboldened

Human Rights Watch said in a statement that Manama is failing to create conditions necessary for a free election by “jailing or silencing people who challenge the ruling family” and banning all opposition parties.

A leader of dissolved opposition groups al-Wefaq said the rise of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has emboldened Bahrain’s authorities in their crackdown on dissent, which has included stripping scores of activists from their nationality.

“They couldn’t go ahead with all the crackdown without the strong backing of the Saudi government. Mohammed bin Salman listens only to hardliners in Bahrain’s ruling family,” Ali Alaswad, who lives in self-exile in London and has been sentenced in absentia to life in prison, told Reuters news agency.

Government opponents say the space for political expression has been shrinking in the lead up to the election. Several activists, including a former lawmaker, were arrested last week for tweeting about boycotting elections, activists said.

“No-one is barred from expressing their political views,” said a government spokesperson.

“Bahrain is home to 16 political societies, the majority of which have put forward candidates for the upcoming elections, and the government fully supports open and inclusive political dialogue.”

Some candidates have taken to social media to urge Bahrainis to vote as a patriotic duty.

“Those who don’t participate will not be part of the national consensus or equation in Bahrain,” said Ali Al Aradi, deputy president of Bahrain’s House of Representatives.

Some opposition figures hope the outcry over the murder of prominent Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Riyadh’s consulate in Istanbul last month could help strengthen more moderate voices in the region, including members of Bahrain’s royal family who are open to dialogue with the opposition.

The killing of Khashoggi, a critic of Prince Mohammed, has drawn global condemnation and exposed Saudi Arabia’s crackdown on dissent and aggressive foreign policy.

“Now if there’s a real accusation from the US against Mohammed bin Salman, radical wings in Bahrain which don’t want to work with the opposition will be weakened,” Alaswad said.

But some analysts are skeptical.

“The killing of Khashoggi will simply serve to highlight that those wishing to highlight abuses face a much riskier task,” said Marc Owen Jones of the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies, University of Exeter.

“If anything it will have a chilling effect.”

California officials released an update late Friday night on the most destructive and deadly wildfire in the state’s history.

The Butte County Sherriff’s office announced that 475 individuals are still unaccounted and raised the death toll to 84 in the Camp Fire, which has scorched Northern California. The blaze has destroyed more structures than the state’s other seven worst wildfires combined.

Officials raised the already staggering death toll to 84 total fatalities after they recovered a body in a structure in the town of Paradise on Thanksgiving Day. Of those 84 deaths, only 54 have been identified. The fire has killed nearly three times as many people as the Griffith Park Fire – a record that stood for 85 years.

Thanks to a heavy rain shower the past week, rescue crews have begin search and recovery efforts in areas previously too dangers to explore. The death toll is expected to rise in the coming days as search efforts continue.

Residents are just beginning to recover from the inferno. Makeshift shelters have provided relief for some families who lost their whole communities to the Camp Fire. In just two weeks, the Camp Fire has blackened 239 square miles northeast of Sacramento, an area roughly twice the size of Detroit.

Black Friday 2018: Save on DNA kits like AncestryDNA, 23andMe, and more — plus deals on kits for dogs

news image

Just to let you know, if you buy something featured here, Mashable might earn an affiliate commission.

Six human DNA kits and two dog DNA kits are on sale to make your gifting easy.
Six human DNA kits and two dog DNA kits are on sale to make your gifting easy.

Image: mashable photo composite

Every holiday gifting list has that one person who just has everything. Just gotta make things hard, don’t they?

Or not: If you’re stumped, an at-home DNA testing kit is your answer — they’re basically the “everyone” gift. AncestryDNA, 23andMe, LivingDNA, MyHeritage DNA, Geno 2.0 Next Generation by National Geographic, and ORIG3N are all having massive Black Friday sales (like, their lowest prices of the year massive). These things have blown up in the past year — so it’s pretty likely that the person you’re gifting to has been wanting to try out this whole DNA testing thing for themselves. Plus, what’s a cooler gift than the gift of finding out you’re related to a former president or Queen?

Gifting to an obsessive dog mom or dad? Doggy DNA kits like Embark and Wisdom Panel are also on sale. (Yes, those exist.)

If you want more details on what each test covers before you make your purchase, find our complete comparison guide on which DNA kit is best for you .

Human DNA kits on sale

Possibly the most well-known DNA service, most use to get that cool pie chart that everyone wants, as well as to uncover distant cousins hiding in their family tree. This kit uses an autosomal (family finder) DNA test that surveys your entire genome at more than 700,000 locations, meaning it covers both the father’s and the mother’s lineage, though it doesn’t tell you what DNA came from which parent. Fill the tube with spit, send it back for testing, and results will be back in 6-8 weeks.

AncestryDNA’s autosomal testing kit usually goes for $99, but you can get it for $50 off at $49 .

23andMe — Up to $99 off

Named as a nod to each person’s unique set of 23 chromosomes, this is the only kit in this lineup that offers health screenings on top of the common autosomal (family finder) testing — and that’s is a pretty big deal, especially if you’re concerned with hereditary illness (or if the person you’re gifting to is a major hypochondriac). Fill the tube with spit, send it back for testing, and results will be back in 6-8 weeks.

Get the autosomal-only service kit for $40 off at $59 at Target, or get the health and ancestry service kit for $99.91 off at $99 at Amazon (both better prices than 23andMe’s official site).

Image: national geographic

Image: national geographic

A bit of a newbie to the game: The National Geographic kit is unique in that it uses next-generation sequencing instead of genotyping technology which is a speedier process that looks at the protein-encoding parts of your genome instead of just piecing stuff together. picks up info that genotyping can’t, making Nat Geo’s kit able to give you your Hominin ancestry — AKA the percentage of DNA in common with a Neanderthal. The kit also tells you where your ancestors came from (with maternal and paternal lines separated), but won’t go into as much detail as other kits. Fill the tube with spit, send it back for testing, and get results back in 6-12 weeks.

Geno 2.0 regularly goes for $99.99, but you can save $44 and get it for $55.99 today .

If differentiating details from your mother’s side and father’s side is an absolute must, LivingDNA is the best bang for your buck. Another specific: If you know that a lot of your results will be in the UK or are most interested in the UK regions, Living DNA will be the kit for you . Do a cheek swab, send the tool back for testing, and results will be in around 10-12 weeks.

Living DNA kits regularly go for $99, but you can save $20 and get one for $69 .

Impatient? MyHeritage is said to be the fastest and cheapest test, usually sending results back to participants in 3-4 weeks. MyHeritage also pulls from an impressive 42 graphic regions, which is the third highest number behind AncestryDNA and Living DNA. DNA can be linked online to create a family tree, and there is an option to upload raw data — so if you’ve gotten some sort of genealogy tests done before or have outside genetics information that you’d like to use, it can easily be included in results. The database is small, so the chance of connecting with live relatives is lower than other kits — but if you’re just interested in tracing rather than meeting someone, that won’t matter.

MyHeritage regularly go for a cheap $75, but you can save $26 and get it for $49 here.

ORIG3N — Save up to $94

If none of these kits are hitting home for you yet, ORIG3N just may be able to help. Instead of DNA related to finding the who and where of your ancestry, this ultra-unique line of kits uses your DNA to find specifics about your health. There’s a box for a DNA fitness test, a DNA nutrition test, a DNA behavior test, a DNA child test, a DNA alcohol tolerance test, and about 15 more — allowing you to pinpoint exactly what you’re looking for without paying for the other stuff. There’s no family finder stuff, but this detailed genetic info can provide insights into how a specific person’s body and mind works and can be used to help that person make proactive lifestyle choices.

ORIG3N kits usually range from $29 to $149, but you can save up to 50% today and get a kit for as low as $7.12 — the most expensive one is only $73.82.

Dog DNA kits on sale

Embark — Save $40

Mashable chose Embark as the best-of-the-best doggy DNA kits, and not just because its name is a fun pun (though that is a bonus). Embark offers insanely detailed health screenings, maternal and paternal tracing back to great grandparents, and tons of genetic markers, making this dog DNA test just as in depth as tests for humans — you’ll even find out if there’s any wolf or coyote blood. The health aspect tests for over 160 diseases and known medical issues for dogs, which could help extend the fur baby’s life if something is caught early enough. After a cheek swab, results will be back within three to seven weeks.

Wisdom Panel is a favorite for dog parents who have no idea what type of fur baby they’re dealing with: When the answer to “Aw, what kind of dog is he?” is “Eh, just a mutt,” this kit is begging to step in. Claiming to have the largest breed database in the dog DNA market, Wisdom Panel kicks the family finder up a notch by testing over 250 canine breeds (which is about 50 more than other tests and includes wolf and coyote). On top of the family tree, there’s also an option for a health screening. After the cheek swab, results should be back within a quick two to three weeks.

Wisdom Panel 3.0 regularly goes for $84.99, but you can save $35 and get it for $49.99 here.

More Democrats threaten to withhold support for Pelosi’s House Speaker role

news image

CLOSE

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi says she has “overwhelming support” among fellow Democrats to become the next House speaker. Pelosi dismissed a challenge from disgruntled Democrats who claim they have 17 names on a letter opposing her. (Nov. 15)
AP

WASHINGTON – A group of nine Democrats threatened Friday to withhold support for Nancy Pelosi’s House Speaker bid, creating a potential roadblock for the California Democrat who has been lobbying for weeks to get her old role back.

Pelosi was already fighting for support from a group of 16 Democrats who penned a letter, declaring they wouldn’t support the minority speaker and instead called for new leadership.

The new group of nine Democrats from the Problem Solvers Caucus threatened to withhold support for Pelosi until she agrees to a list of demands that includes House rule changes that could potentially allow for more bipartisan legislation to pass.

The group, in a statement, said it would “only vote for a Speaker candidate who supports ‘Break the Gridlock’ rules changes.”

The group met with Pelosi last week after sending her a letter about calls to change House rules that would allow all members to push bills in the House, which currently is only done by the leadership, according to CNN

More: What we know about Nancy Pelosi’s House Speaker bid and why some Democrats oppose her

“While we appreciate Leader Pelosi’s broad commitment to our effort, we have yet to receive specific commitments to our proposed rules changes that would help ‘Break the Gridlock’ and allow for true bipartisan governing in this new era of divided government,” a statement from the group reads. “Without specific changes, we will face more of the same — small pockets of extreme ideologues will continue to block the will of the commonsense majority.”

While Pelosi is widely expected to win the House Speaker nomination next week in her caucus, she faces a tougher battle when the full House votes on her nomination in January. She will need a majority, 218 votes, to win the position.

The caucus’ threat to withhold nine votes along with the 16 members who signed a letter last week could be a potential roadblock for Pelosi. Democrats will hold at least 234 seats in the House when new members are sworn in, meaning she can only afford to lose 16 votes.

Pelosi still has weeks to lobby those on the fence before the final January vote.

Already some of those who voiced opposition have caved and now are supporting Pelosi for the role. Rep. Brian Higgins, D-N.Y., who was one of 16 to sign the opposition letter last week, reversed his position after Pelosi said she was open to Medicare for people over 50 and an infrastructure bill, something many Democrats have said would likely receive bipartisan support.

The Problem Solvers Caucus has pushed for ‘Break the Gridlock’ rule changes, which Politico notes include proposals that would allow individual House members to propose bipartisan bills, which over the years have been overlooked.

The caucus said in its statement that this month’s midterms showed that “the American people have had enough of obstructionism and pure partisanship” and instead want Congress to govern and pass meaningful legislation.

“Although we are at a stalemate in our discussions, and therefore cannot support Leader Pelosi for Speaker at this time, we will keep working with the Leader and others in hope of reaching consensus on specific rules changes for more bipartisan, common sense governing,” the group said.
