What does the Matthew Hedges case tell us about UAE?

Matthew Hedges has spent the last seven months in prison in the United Arab Emirates and now he faces the prospect of staying there forever.

The British PhD student was given a life sentence for spying on Wednesday by Abu Dhabi’s Federal Court of Appeals.

Hedges was studying for a doctorate on the Gulf country’s foreign and security policies at the time of his arrest.

The Emiratis say Hedges made a full confession, but his family says he did not understand the document he signed, which was written in Arabic.

Government leaders in Abu Dhabi now say they’re considering a request from Hedges’ wife for clemency.

The story highlights an issue that has arisen repeatedly in different forms: the contrast between the open, modern and tolerant image that the UAE, generally, and Dubai, in particular, seeks to project to the wider world, and what some see as the Emirates’ narrow and conservative approach to security and public morality.

Is the Hedges case just a major misunderstanding? Or evidence of a larger problem of academic and political freedom in the UAE?

What one Big Ten school was willing to pay for students to stay at home football games

news image

Jay Cannon, USA TODAY
Published 6:32 a.m. ET Nov. 23, 2018

CLOSE

USA TODAY Sports’ Dan Wolken and Paul Myerberg react to the latest College Football Playoff rankings and ponder the chaos that could ensue if Georgia can upset Alabama in two weeks.
USA TODAY

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — In an attempt to boost student turnout at football games this season, the University of Maryland paid a total of $28,000 in scholarship money to students for attending games and staying until the fourth quarter.

For several seasons, the Terrapins have struggled to fill the student section at Maryland Stadium, ranking third-worst in attendance among Big Ten teams last fall. The stadium is often invaded by larger opposing fan bases, and the student section has been known to thin out quickly and easily, regardless of the game outcome.

“I mean, Maryland attendance could be a little better, you see all the Ohio State fans here?” said Maryland freshman and scholarship giveaway winner Jesse Akiva Klineman at last Saturday’s 52-51 home loss to the Buckeyes.

“I’d love to have more Maryland fans here every week.”

More: Question of the Week: What is college football’s best rivalry?

More: USA TODAY Sports college football staff picks for Week 13

The attendance issues drew the attention of one motivated donor prior to the 2018 season. The donor, whose identity remains anonymous, approached the school with an idea to incentivize students to not only attend games but also stay at them.

As a result of the donor’s funding, one Maryland student was randomly selected to win a scholarship of at least $5,000 in the fourth quarter of every home game this season. The catch: He or she had to enter the stadium prior to kickoff and stay until the fourth quarter to be eligible for the prize.

If the student didn’t show, two backup names would be called for their chance at the scholarship. If the giveaway went unclaimed, the $5,000 would roll over until the next week, giving students a chance at a $10,000 scholarship.

“Some students were kind of in shock that we were doing it, and I guess kind of in awe, [thinking] ‘Oh, all I have to do is show up at the start of the game and stay there until the fourth quarter and I might win $10,000?’” said Director of Marketing and Fan Experience Jordan Looby.

Another donor, inspired by the original giveaway idea, offered to give a $1,000 scholarship in the third quarter of every home game, starting with the Terrapins’ Sept. 22 home date with Minnesota.

Between the two giveaways, students could have hauled in $35,000 in scholarship money at the Terrapins’ six home games this year.

Despite the added incentive for student support, the $5,000 scholarship went unclaimed at half of the school’s home games, while the $1,000 one went unclaimed twice.

Nevertheless, Looby called the promotion a success.

“If you’re just talking anecdotal evidence, I think it was successful… It’s not super often that we hear a ton of buzz about a specific promotion that we do,” he explained.

“If we keep doing things like this and playing games like we did on Saturday [against Ohio State], that culture will start to build back up a little bit.”

As for whether the promotion will continue, that decision will be left up to the donors.

“I don’t think it would be something that’s necessarily budgeted for us internally,” Looby said. “I’d love to do it again, but I think it would require probably some support like it did this year.”

Black Friday is finally here, and everyone is geared up to drop their savings on a new TV or laptop — unless you’re one of those people who accidentally watches recipe videos on Facebook for hours. In that case, you’ve probably been waiting (slash drooling) for the perfect moment to invest in one of those beautiful KitchenAid mixers.

Heads up: It’s now.

These stunners have basically become a status symbol in the foodie world. They’re known for their powerful motors and countless attachments, but let’s be real — everyone’s secretly really into them for the color selection. KitchenAid mixers are one of the hottest items this Black Friday, with most mixers on sale for hundreds of dollars off everywhere. (But those low prices means colors are selling out quickly, so you had better move quick.)

We’ve pulled out some of the best deals on popular models to save you some time, but if you want to skip our picks and run rampant with the full KitchenAid sales, find them here: | | | | |

First up, the standard: The forever stylish is $135 off at Macy’s today when you use code DEAL and at Amazon. With 15+ attachments, a 4.5-quart stainless steel mixing bowl, and 10 speed settings, it’s the perfect mixer for moderate baking (and looking fabulous fitting nicely in the corner). Light to lift, small enough to not take up the whole counter, and a super clean stainless steel to match the rest of the kitchen, it’s a gift anyone would love. Originally $324.99, you can swipe it for $189.99 at ,  , , or .

Sorry, HGTV, but not all of us have massive kitchens with endless counter space. Luckily, this is 25% lighter and 20% smaller than other models, and is $170 off today (nearly $100 cheaper than the sale price at other retailers). Don’t worry, it’s as powerful as the KitchenAid Classic, with 10 mixing speeds and a multipurpose hub that powers over 10 attachments — just for smaller batches. Choose from 10 colors and get it , depending on which color you pick.

Looking for something a little more heavy duty? We feel that — pretending like you’re on The Great British Bake Off when no one is home is totally a hobby. This is possibly the most badass of the line and $150 off of its regular $499 today. It’s a true workhorse for heavy-duty dough projects: its PowerKnead spiral dough hook replicates hand-kneading to handle 20% more dough than other models, so giant batches of bread or cookies don’t have to be a chore. Complete with 575W motor and a stainless steel bowl, you can get it for $349.99 at , , ,  .

You don’t have to give up those coveted color options to get a deal on a high-quality mixer — this is up to $206 off and comes in, wait for it, nearly 30 colors. Though it doesn’t feature the automatic bowl-lifting tech that the Pro series does, this adorable retro-style mixer is the perfect kitchen companion with a super convenient tilting head, 325W motor, and stainless steel bowl. Czech PM survives no-confidence vote amid corruption allegations

news image

Prague, Czech Republic – The Czech Republic’s coalition government has survived a vote of no-confidence over a fraud scandal implicating embattled Prime Minister Andrej Babis.

The vote on Friday saw only 92 opposition legislators backing the motion, well short of the 101 needed to topple Babis, an agro-chemicals mogul pegged by Forbes magazine as the second-wealthiest Czech.

It followed allegations that the populist billionaire had kidnapped his own son to obstruct a high-profile fraud case, in which both of them were implicated.

The vote came just five months into the fragile government’s term and was supported by six opposition parties.

Babis faces charges of misusing $2.25m in EU subsidy for a luxury resort and farm, which he transferred to relatives, including his son, Andrej Babis Jr.

“The government should be headed by an ethical, moral, and decent person who is considered credible even by his political opponents. I do not see such a person heading it,” Ivan Bartos, chairman of the opposition Czech Pirates Party, said in parliament during the vote.

While the opposition called for the prime minister to step aside to allow an independent investigation into the allegations, it failed to gain the support of at least one of the two coalition partners needed to win a simple majority.

The Communist party voted in favour of Babis while MPs from the Social Democratic coalition abstained from the process, assuring a win for the ruling government.

“The government is successful and I want to say … it has our confidence. But it is obvious that the government is burdened by the circumstances surrounding the prime minister,” Interior Minister Jan Hamacek, leader of the Czech Social Democratic Party, said.

WATCH: Czech president suggests sending refugees to uninhabited Greek island

He assured a police investigation into the allegations against Babis will take place. Before the vote, he had told reporters that his party is open to an early election if required.

Fraud scandal

Last year, Babis was probed by local authorities and the EU over hiding ownership of the Stork Nest farm.

Babis has repeatedly said he had no intentions of stepping down from his post due to “unsubstantiated reports”. He also chastised the Seznam media outlet for secretly filming his 35-year-old son, who he claims suffers from schizophrenia.

“In this situation I really have no reason to resign. You have to either dismiss me or you have to defeat me in a free, democratic election,” Babis said in Facebook post on Friday.

On November 12, a Seznam reporter tracked down Babis Jr. in Switzerland, where he lived with his mother. He said he was forced by a leader in his father’s government into hiding to prevent him from testifying in the case.

“What [Fridau’s vote] represents is an appeal for some standards in politics,” said Jiri Pehe, political analyst and director of the New York University in Prague.

“The [opposition] knew they wouldn’t succeed, but they had to go through this because this is a serious matter.”

Humans didn’t cause mass animal extinctions in Africa, like previously thought, study says

news image

A new study disagrees with a longstanding view that humans wiped out large animals that previously occupied Africa.

In research published in the journal Science on Friday, authors analyzed records on megaherbivore communities in eastern Africa over seven million years. A megaherbivore is a mammal weighing more than 2,000 pounds. They concluded that extinctions of diverse mammal communities in Africa occurred before evidence of human hunting.

The animal decline might have instead been because of environmental factors such as declining atmospheric carbon dioxide and expansion of grasslands, researchers write.

“Low CO2 levels favor tropical grasses over trees, and as a consequence savannas became less woody and more open through time,” John Rowan, a postdoctoral scientist from the University of Massachusetts Amherst who was involved in the research, said in a statement. “We know that many of the extinct megaherbivores fed on woody vegetation, so they seem to disappear alongside their food source.”

Analysis suggests 28 lineages of megaherbivores went extinct, starting around 4.6 million years ago, according to lead author Tyler Faith, an assistant professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Utah. Today, only elephants, hippopotamuses, giraffes and white and black rhinoceroses exist.

University of Oxford, U.K., researchers cautioned that it isn’t exactly clear when humans began affecting large animal populations, but there is strong evidence that human impact played a role in losses tens of thousands of years ago.

“The causes of megaherbivore decline are probably complex, multidimensional, and varied across time and space,” René Bobe and Susana Carvalho wrote in the same issue of Science

Report: Blizzard working on ‘Warcraft’ meets ‘Pokémon Go’ game

news image

Pokémon Go to the polls World of Warcraft

According to a , Blizzard is currently quietly developing a new Warcraft spinoff based on the hit mobile game, Pokémon Go.

The report claims that many people at Blizzard, the popular game developer responsible for World of Warcraft, Starcraft, and Diablo, are big fans of Pokémon Go. Most importantly, World of Warcraft lead designer Cory Stockton is a huge Pokémon fan, which, according to developers, helped push the idea into production.

The new mobile game is currently being developed by a Blizzard “incubation team” for multiple smartphone platforms.

While the Warcraft mobile game was sparked by Pokémon Go, we’re not exactly going to see Pikachu popping up in Azeroth. Those who spoke to Kotaku for the report claim the game is far enough into production that they’ve actually played it. They say there’s “a lot more to it than Pokémon Go, including single-player mechanics.”

Not much else is known about this secret Warcraft project at this time. The news was leaked in a report about the upcoming Warcraft mobile game project Diablo Immortal. That game has received some backlash after it was announced at Blizzard’s annual gaming convention, Blizzcon, last month.

Many Diablo fans reacted negatively to the popular franchise being adapted for mobile. Many Pokémon games, however, have traditionally been mobile-first, so the new, Warcraft-themed take on Pokémon Go seems like a more natural fit. We await leaked screenshots with baited breath.

Rain helps quench hot spots, smoldering fire as Camp Fire nearly contained

news image

After 15 days of a runaway inferno, the raging Camp Fire that has killed 84 people and destroyed more than 13,000 homes in Northern California was 95 percent contained Friday, with rain helping extinguish hot spots and smoldering blazes.

Cal Fire, which tracks the state’s wildfires, said all containment lines “continued to hold” late Thursday and that tactical patrols in the area are responding to calls around the fire area. The blaze is no longer threatening any structures, fire officials say.

The National Weather Service forecasts rain over the next few days in the lower elevations of Northern California, which should help bring the blaze to an end by Nov. 30. But forecasters also warn that heavy rain on dry, burn scars could create flash flooding and debris slides.

More: How California wildfire survivors can make a comeback after losing everything

With the fire threat receding, teams in hard-hit populated areas focused on the search for additional victims, particularly in Paradise, a retirement community with a population 27,000. Paradise suffered the bulk of the deaths when the swift-moving fire, which broke out Nov. 8, swept through the town with little advance warning.

The Butte County Sheriff’s Office says more than 560 names remain on the missing list, but authorities emphasize that many of them may be safe and unaware they have been reported missing.

Since it erupted two weeks ago, the Camp Fire has blackened 239 square miles northeast of Sacramento, or an area more than twice the size of Detroit.

In defense of ‘Repo! The Genetic Opera,’ the grossest musical ever

news image

Welcome to No Shame November! This week we’re diving into the pop culture we love that society tells us we shouldn’t.

I’m an entertainment writer. I love my job because I like watching things and forming opinions on them. There is, however, one thing that sometimes irks me about having whatever nebulous responsibility comes with being a critic: I always think I’m supposed to have good taste.

Good taste is, frankly, a fucked up and classist concept. It shoves what people enjoy into categories like prestige, high art, camp, bad, and trash, and often the line between what’s considered tasteful and what’s not is a general sense of agreement among people who have the luxury of thinking too hard about it in the first place.

In short, rich, smart people have Good Taste. Everyone else can suck on their garbage pops and suffer through Transformers 17. That’s the dominant narrative here. We made this.

Even as a critic my good taste has always been a little questionable, but never more so perhaps than when I scream the praises of one of the least tasteful musical films ever produced — Repo! The Genetic Opera.

Repo, not to be confused with the Jude Law movie Repo Men (which may or may not have jacked Repo’s concept, no one could ever really figure that out in a court of law) is a sung-through goth opera set in a dystopian future where universal organ failures have decimated the human population. A company called GeneCo steps in and invents expensive artificial organs that save the human race, but the high cost of the organs causes some to fall behind on payments for their life-saving new parts.

When someone can’t pay for their shiny fake heart, the Repo Man comes and reclaims the company’s property. Permanently.

Did I mention that Repo is produced by the same company that makes the Saw movies? Right, sorry. That part’s important. All of the onscreen “repossessions,” of which there are not few, are rendered with alarming, gory realism. Blood everywhere. Intestines swinging in the breeze. There’s even a little song about it. Think about that a little.

Somehow, the setup of Repo is not even a tenth of its story. All of the above information is conveyed in the first minute through comic book panels that introduce the organ failures, GeneCo, and the main characters before Repo even touches its its live-action plot, which is a funky, Rapunzel-esque riff on how parents go too far in trying to protect their children and freedom of choice is man’s paramount virtue.

Oh, Paris Hilton is in this. She sings a song about being addicted to future heroin while wearing a leather bustier and trying to fuck a man who sucks glowing blue juice out of people’s brains. It’s incredible.

The girl from Spy Kids is there too. Anthony Stewart Head from Buffy plays her dad.

It wasn’t until I watched it twice, compelled to do that again with all the impulse control of a puppy smashing her face into a cactus, that Repo really clicked for me.

I’d be lying if I said I loved Repo on my first watch. It’s very easy to feel uncomfortable with some of the things that happen on screen — wanton murder, strong hints of incest, a lot of pelvic thrusting about drugs, bug collecting, grave robbing, inheritance law… It’s a lot to take in at once. Between the subject matter, the difficult music, and the bondage-goth costuming, it was easy for me to write the movie off as gross and wrong. Liking it would have meant I had Bad Taste.

It wasn’t until I watched it twice, compelled to do that again with all the impulse control of a puppy smashing her face into a cactus, that Repo really clicked for me.

“My god,” I thought as a character sang about stealing someone’s face to staple their face on top of his face, “I’m experiencing real joy right now. This movie makes me feel good. It’s fun and I like it.”

Cue crisis.

I tried to rationalize my love of Repo with some chatter about camp and controlled edginess, loving the music for its brashness and the story for its message, but it’s hard to keep one’s theory of art straight when a character shoves his hand up a dead person’s chest cavity to use the corpse mouth as a puppet. I can’t defend this movie as a commentary on anything besides what happens when producers finance a project because “fuck you is why.”

I just love it. It tickles me in all the right spots, and its music and iconic lines have been etched on my soul as clearly as my own name. Can’t explain it, so I won’t. Maybe I just have bad taste.

When I think about it literally though, taste means taste. Like the physical sensation of loving the way certain foods activate sensations on your tongue, Good Taste is and should be a relative concept. With all its blood, too-long songs, stunt casting, plot twists, nonsense costumes, and straight up offensive content, Repo! The Genetic Opera is delicious to me.

What tastes good to you?
