Kerala flood survivors face ‘great struggle’ to rebuild lives

news image

People in India’s flood-ravaged state of Kerala are facing a “great struggle to rebuild their lives”, local officials have warned, as high waters that have killed hundreds of people and displaced more than a million others start to recede.

Rescue teams searched throughout the southern state on Wednesday for survivors stranded during the area’s worst flooding for a century.

Torrential monsoon rains from the end of May onwards have forced an estimated 1.2 million people to shelter inside makeshift relief camps, according to government figures.

Rains subsided on Sunday after dramatically intensifying in the preceding two weeks, killing at least 238 people since August 8.

The death toll since the end of May has topped 380, while authorities say that dozens of people are still missing.

Speaking to Al Jazeera, State Relief Commissioner PH Kurian said that more than a million people remain in the camps.

“The exact number is not known, this is a dynamic figure,” he said on Wednesday.

As waters started receding over the past few days, authorities began taking stock of what is projected to be a months-long, if not longer, effort to rebuild the state’s devastated infrastructure and services.

Local officials estimate the floods caused $3bn of damage, with about 10,000km of Kerala’s roads and more than 100,000 houses needing to be reconstructed.

Several of Kerala’s predominant industries – including tourism as well as tea, rubber and spice plantations –  have been hit particularly hard, with estimated losses totalling tens of millions of dollars.

Hotels and tour operators in several locations throughout the state have also witnessed cancellations approaching 80 percent of all bookings ahead of peak tourist season, which runs from September to March, according to Indian Association of Tour Operators figures reported by the Times of India.

On Tuesday, state Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan told reporters he had requested a $1.4bn loan from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government to finance reconstruction efforts.

“Our aim is not merely a restoration of the state to pre-flood times, but the creation of a new Kerala,”  Vijayan said.

Modi has pledged $71m of assistance to date, with more funding expected to be released by the central government in coming weeks, and deployed military units to help with recovery efforts.

“This is not going to be a 100-metre sprint, it is going to be a long marathon,” Unni Krishnan, a member of Save the Children’s emergency health unit, told Al Jazeera in reference to rebuilding efforts in the state, home to more than 33 million people.

Risk of disease

Medical officials and NGOs, meanwhile, warned of a heightened risk of waterborne disease outbreaks due to the flooding.

“Water sanitation and hygiene are very crucial at this time,” Ray Kancharla, Save the Children India’s humanitarian manager, told Al Jazeera.

Local health officials said earlier this week they were prepared to deal with any such emergence of disease and had distributed preventive medicines in a bid to avert an outbreak.

According to Indias central government health index, Kerala has the best performing public health system of any state in the country.

Save the Children officials told Al Jazeera that Kerala, one of India’s wealthiest states, was well positioned to avoid any major emergence of disease because of its strong public health system and a literacy rate approaching 100 percent.

“Health and education together is the definite antidote to stop disease outbreaks,” Krishnan said.

Schools throughout Kerala remained closed on Wednesday but are set to reopen next week, Krishnan added, following the conclusion of the state’s annual Hindu harvest festival.

“There are broken houses and damaged schools but along with that some of the invisible needs such as mental health and emotional care should also be a priority … [because] children will have questions like ‘why did this happen to me?’” he said.

“There is a lot of capacity in this state but what it lacks is the contextual experience because it has never dealt with a disaster of this magnitude before.”

Stoke City 0-3 Wigan Athletic

news image

Will Grigg has scored three goals in his past two games for Wigan Athletic

Stoke City’s winless start in the Championship continued as they were well beaten by newly promoted Wigan Athletic.

Wigan took the lead when Will Grigg poked home from Gavin Massey’s low cross into the box, and they doubled their advantage when Massey finished from a tight angle.

The hosts conceded a penalty when Joe Allen brought down Grigg, who fired past Jack Butland from the spot for his second.

As the game drew to a close, Stoke were reduced to 10 men when Ashley Williams was sent off for a second yellow card after a bad tackle on Massey.

Stoke struggled for long periods and the result means they have now failed to win their past nine home league games, stretching back to last season when they were relegated from the Premier League.

Williams, meanwhile, has been sent off in two of his past three league starts, with his previous red card coming for Everton against Burnley in March.

Boos rang around the Bet365 Stadium at the final whistle after another poor performance from the Potters, who have taken just two points from a possible 12 under Gary Rowett.

Perhaps more worryingly for Rowett, his side failed to register a shot on target in the whole 90 minutes.

The hosts had in fact started well, with Benik Afobe having the ball in the net early on when he finished coolly past Christian Walton, but the flag was raised for offside.

However, Northern Ireland striker Grigg’s brace and Massey’s first-half goal ensured Stoke’s search for a first league win since their relegation from the top flight continues.

Stoke City boss Gary Rowett told BBC Radio Stoke:

“I’ll take responsibility for that performance and I’ll look at what I’ve done and be brave enough to say that. What I need is some of the players brave enough to say that.

“If the fans want to boo me, I’m fine with that. I can’t complain about it or say they’re unjustified in doing it.

“I’ll be man enough to stand outside there and try and turn this thing around.”

Wigan Athletic manager Paul Cook told BBC Radio Manchester:

“We always felt we’d have moments in the game and obviously the key moments tonight have gone our way.

“The goals were scored at good times in the game for us and when you win a game like that, everything has to fall into place.

“Stoke not scoring early in the game was massive for us.”

Jimmy Bennett speaks about Asia Argento: We DID have sex when I was underage

news image

Jimmy Bennett, the ex-child actor who says #MeToo hero Asia Argento had sex with him when he was 17, spoke out for the first time Wednesday, saying he was traumatized by the encounter and never reported it because he was “ashamed and afraid.”

“I did not initially speak out about my story because I chose to handle it in private with the person who wronged me,” said Bennett in a statement, according to an email to USA TODAY from Bennett’s lawyer, Gordon Sattro. “My trauma resurfaced as she came out as a victim herself. I have not made a public statement in the past days and hours because I was ashamed and afraid to be part of the public narrative.”

But contrary to what Argento has said denying a sexual encounter, Bennett confirmed a sexual encounter did take place, he was underage at the time, and he was unprepared to deal with the “ramifications” at the time.

“I tried to seek justice in a way that made sense to me at the time because I was not ready to deal with the ramifications of my story becoming public,” his statement said. “At the time I believed there was still a stigma to being in the situation as a male in our society. I didn’t think that people would understand the event that took place from the eyes of a teenage boy.”

Now that he’s 22, he said he’s no longer afraid to speak.

“I have had to overcome many adversities in my life, and this is another that I will deal with, in time. I would like to move past this event in my life, and today I choose to move forward, no longer in silence.”

According to documents sent under mysterious circumstances to The New York Times last week, Argento, then 37, had sex with Bennett, then two months after his 17th birthday, in a Marina del Rey hotel room in 2013, and then quietly agreed to pay him nearly $400,000 as hush money.

The Times said it received documents in an encrypted email that included a selfie of Argento and Bennett in bed together, dated the same day as another selfie of the two she posted on her Instagram about her “reunion” with Bennett.

The age of consent is 18 in California, so such an encounter would have been a crime in 2013 and would theoretically still be possible to prosecute. Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department detectives have said they are looking into the matter.

The private settlement between Argento and Bennett was reached a month after Bennett notified Argento in November 2017 that he intended to sue her over their encounter.

Bennett approached Argento shortly after she went public with her accusation that movie mogul Harvey Weinstein raped her in a hotel room in France in 1997. She then became one of the leading voices of the #MeToo movement to call out sexual abuse, even as she was quietly paying out hush money to someone who accused her of statutory rape.

The Times attempted for days to get a comment from both Argento and Bennett before it posted its story on Sunday. USA TODAY and other media outlets attempted the same in the days since.

Argento finally responded on Tuesday with a statement “strongly denying” she had sex with Bennett and lamenting she is the victim of “long-standing persecution.”

She acknowledged paying Bennett hush money but said that decision and the subsequent arrangements for payment were made by her late boyfriend, Anthony Bourdain, who considered Bennett “dangerous” but still deserving of “compassion” given his money woes.

Bourdain committed suicide in June. It is not clear if there is a link between his death and Argento’s conflict with Bennett.

On Wednesday, it was Bennett’s turn to speak out for the first time since the scandal broke.

Bennett is a former child actor, with a list of credits dating to 2002, who’s now a rock musician. He met Argento when he was cast at age 7 in a 2004 movie she co-wrote, directed and starred in, “The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things.” (She played a prostitute; he played her son, whom she dresses as a girl to lure men. His character is raped in the film.)

‘The Happytime Murders’ review roundup: Critics think it’s a mess

news image

Image: Justin lubin / stx entertainment

Puppets, murder, Sesame Street lawsuits—that’s what summer blockbusters are made of… right? Well, according to critics, not so much.

Reviews for The Happytime Murders aren’t looking so happy. Despite its star-studded cast — led by Melissa McCarthy — the puppet-heavy film noir/comedy isn’t doing so well in the court of public opinion.

Directed by Brian Henson (son of the late Muppets creator Jim Henson), The Happytime Murders parodies traditional puppet storytelling in a human- and puppet-inhabited Los Angeles. From drug abuse to graphic sex scenes, the Happytime trailer makes it clear that this isn’t your average visit with Kermit the Frog. And yet, while the naughty puppet trope has certainly worked in the past, it doesn’t seem to be singing (or miming) quite like it used to.

Check out some critics’ takes on The Happytime Murders below.

It tries way too hard

E. Oliver Whitney, ScreenCrush:

The Happytime Murders tries so desperately hard to push the envelope of indecency that it crosses into the realm of being astonishingly unfunny. I honestly can’t name another time I’ve sat in a theater and witnessed such deafening silence fall across an audience during a comedy than in my press screening for this. It isn’t the mere notion of watching puppets act naughty that is offensive or shocking; what’s shocking is how Henson’s film, written by Todd Berger with a story by Dee Austin Robertson, thinks it’s hilarious and edgy as it continues to make a fool of itself throughout the (thankfully brief) 91-minute runtime. The Happytime Murders is like that guy who gets too wasted too early at the party, taking things to an 11 when everyone else is comfortably tipsy at a seven. It’s as if a group of puppeteers who’ve been forced to stymie their horn-dog sense of humor for years are finally free to shout every crude joke at the top of their lungs all at once.

Andrew Barker, Variety:

It should come as no surprise that “Happytime” comes up farcically short as a metaphor for racism. But its most fatal miscalculation is the decision to frontload so many of its crassest setpieces into the first 15 or 20 minutes, depriving the rest of the film of the shock value that is its entire raison d’etre. By the midway point, the movie is so strapped for ideas that it resorts to turning dud one-off jokes (characters mistaking McCarthy for a man, “an asshole says what?”) into painfully extended running gags.

Its attempts at social commentary fail miserably

Molly Freeman, ScreenRant:

The Happytime Murders also clumsily tries to use its puppet-filled world as a metaphor for classism, racism and sexism in modern America, as puppets are persecuted and made to be the butt of offensive jokes. However, those themes aren’t really developed and are largely forgotten once the murder mystery storyline kicks into gear. Instead, positioning the puppets as a race that has been historically persecuted is more offensive and ridiculous than the smart social commentary The Happytime Murders clearly wants its audience to believe it is.

Maya Rudolph shines amidst felt

Frank Scheck, The Hollywood Reporter

As always, McCarthy is a delight, elevating the uneven material with consistent comic brilliance marked by broad physicality; the scene in which her character snorts “grade A sucrose,” enough to kill an ordinary human, is a hoot. She also displays striking chemistry with her puppet co-star, expertly voiced and manipulated by Barretta. The more than 125 puppet characters, all created especially for the film, feature many striking creations, albeit not ones likely to show up on toy-store shelves. But the movie is practically stolen by a human performer, Rudolph, who infuses Bubbles with as much sweetness as hilarity.

David Ehrlich, IndieWire

It’s an incredible testament to the great Maya Rudolph that she almost rises above it, playing Phil’s lovelorn secretary with enough doe-eyed sass to save a few of her scenes. After all those years at “SNL,” she’s an absolute master at rescuing laughs from overlong sketches that run themselves into the ground — she does more with a lock-pick and a banana in this movie than Henson accomplishes with 50 hypersexual puppets and all the hand-sewn vulvas an R-rating can buy.

We’re lucky it’s only 90 minutes

Brian Lowry, CNN:

“Happytime Murders” can’t tickle the funny bone enough to get more than a few laughs even from Elmo. It’s hard to overemphasize the extent to which the puerile humor yields diminishing returns, as the filmmakers (Henson and writer Todd Berger) hammer away at dirty-puppet jokes to the point of wearing holes in them.

A.O. Scott, The New York Times

Ms. McCarthy has proved her comic mettle in all kinds of company, so why not alongside a chain-smoking blue guy in a rumpled suit? She and the other non-inanimate actors — Mainly Ms. Banks, Maya Rudolph and Leslie David Baker — get to do a bit of silly riffing, but it’s mostly tired, bloodless stuff. The plot should be an excuse for comic invention, but it mostly just gets in the way, which makes me think that a feature film isn’t really what Phil and his ilk need or deserve. Like their mainstream Muppet brethren, they might be more at home on smaller screeners, in shorter bits. No disrespect.

England v India: Joe Root expects hosts to fight back in series

news image

Joe Root has not scored a Test century for more than a year

England captain Joe Root says his side are still charge of the series against India despite their third-Test defeat.

India’s 203-run win at Trent Bridge cut England’s lead to 2-1 in the five-match series, with the fourth Test in Southampton beginning on 30 August.

“We’re in the driving seat as far as the series goes – we have to remember that,” said Root.

“I’m expecting the guys to go to Southampton and hopefully take the opportunity to wrap up the series.”

England’s defeat in Nottingham was as a result of a horrible batting collapse in their first innings, where they lost all 10 wickets in a session to be bowled out for 161.

Root added: “We have got a little bit of time to reflect on what has been a difficult week, but in England we are a very good side at bouncing back from a tough couple of days.

“One thing you can never question about this group of players is their character and the way they can respond to a difficult period.”

Highlights: India take England’s final wicket to win third Test

Batting collapses have blighted England’s Test cricket in recent years – this latest slump was the third time since 2016 that they have lost all 10 wickets in a session.

In all, they have lost their fourth wicket for less than 100 runs in half of their past 62 Test innings.

“We sat down and spoke honestly about how we’re going to get this right,” said Root. “It has happened on a couple of occasions and obviously isn’t good enough.

“For the players that we’ve got, it is well below what we are capable of doing.”

Root also gave his “100%” backing to former captain Alastair Cook, who is England’s all-time record run-scorer in Tests, but averages only 19.21 with the bat in 2018.

“He is a world-class performer,” said Root, 27. “I want the media to write him off because every time they do he comes back and scores a double hundred.

“There is no-one currently playing Test cricket with more experience than him. I’m sure he’ll be calling upon all of that to give himself the best chance in Southampton.”

Root said he expects Cook, 33, to be available for the fourth Test despite the imminent arrival of his third child.

The captain also said that England will wait on the fitness of Jonny Bairstow, who suffered a broken finger whilst keeping wicket at Trent Bridge.

“It’s early days and will have to see how that settles down,” added Root. “We have got a bit of time before the next game, so can assess it further down the line.

“If he’s able, he warrants his place in the side as a batter alone. In terms of the keeping, we are fortunate to have Jos Buttler in the side and able to take the gloves.”

If Bairstow is ruled out, England may opt to recall Moeen Ali, who made a double century against Root’s Yorkshire on Tuesday.

“It’s been a great week for Moeen, it’s a shame it was against Yorkshire,” said Root. “He’s a fine player and it’s great to see him pushing for his place.”

President Trump awards Congressional Medal of Honor to fallen airman John Chapman

news image

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump on Wednesday awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor to the widow of John Chapman, a U.S. Air Force technical sergeant, who died at 36 in Afghanistan.

Valerie Nessel and her family accepted the award in the East Room of the White House amid applause from dozens of veterans and politicians.

Chapman was honored for his actions on March 4, 2002, at the Battle of Roberts Ridge on Takur Ghar mountain. After rescuing a teammate who had been stranded in enemy territory after a helicopter crash, Chapman was killed while engaging enemy gunfire from al-Qaeda insurgents.

His actions are credited with saving the lives of his teammates.

“In this final act of supreme courage, John gave his life for his fellow warriors,” Trump said at the ceremony. “Through his extraordinary sacrifice, John helped save more than 20 service members.”

Chapman’s honor comes after a 30-month review of drone footage, autopsy results and eyewitness accounts of Chapman’s actions – a lengthy process because of the classified nature of Chapman’s mission as a special operator.

After the review, which concluded that Chapman had continued fighting through his initial wounds, the Pentagon upgraded his commendation to the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest award for valor. Initially, he had been posthumously awarded the Air Force Cross.

During the battle, Chapman survived gunshot wounds to his heel, calf, back and liver, but lost consciousness, leading his teammates to believe he had been killed. But when another American aircraft arrived, Chapman emerged from the bunker he had occupied after his fellow troops had left. He fired at insurgents attacking the aircraft, then suffered a gunshot wound that caused his aorta to explode.

The troops who found Chapman’s body discovered that he had used nearly all 210 rounds of ammunition he had brought into battle.

“Even though he was mortally wounded, John regained consciousness and continued to fight on,” Trump said. “And he really fought. We have proof of that fight – he really fought.”

Chapman is the first airman to win the Medal of Honor since the Vietnam War. In his speech during the ceremony, Trump said Chapman’s senior yearbook quote had been: “Give yourself before taking of someone else.”

“Very far-sighted,” Trump said. “John lived by that motto every single day.”

Forget sun signs: Your zodiac sign is whoever won Best Actress the year you were born

news image

The people of Twitter read their horoscopes religiously and map their birth charts meticulously, so it’s no wonder that zodiac memes are having a moment right now.

The fascination with astrology prompted the recent “fuck your zodiac sign” meme, and now it’s birthed another one.

It’s pretty simple: the meme posits that whoever won the Academy Award for best actress the year you were born is your true zodiac sign — and people can’t stop sharing their results.

People on Twitter have been quote tweeting and replying to the prompt with their best actress signs — and they appear to be loving them. And, I mean, who wouldn’t be excited to learn that the universe has aligned you with Cher or Meryl Streep?

Sure, there are no complicated charts involved, but hey, it’s fun and we’re into it. (FWIW, I’m a Kathy Bates, Cher rising.)

Afghanistan ‘will not attend’ Russia-led peace talks

news image

Afghanistan will not attend multinational peace talks hosted by Russia early next month, the Afghan foreign ministry has said, a decision that could make Moscow reconsider its plan to invite the Taliban.

“The peace process definitely needs to be carried out under the leadership of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. We will not participate in the Moscow talks,” said Sibghat Ahmadi, the deputy spokesman of Afghanistan’s foreign ministry, Afghan news website TOLOnews reported on Wednesday.

Separately, an Afghan official working with the foreign ministry in Kabul told Reuters news agency that the government had “decided against attending the Moscow conference”, adding that they will “hold direct talks” with the Taliban, without the direct involvement of foreign powers.

The comments came a day after Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov was quoted as saying that the Taliban plans to take part in the September 4 talks in Russia’s capital, Moscow.

The Taliban has confirmed to Al Jazeera that they will attend the talks.

Russia has invited 12 countries, including the United States, to the talks, but Washington has declined the invitation. Russia’s foreign ministry said on Wednesday it regretted the US decision.

It is unclear whether the Afghan officials’ statements on Wednesday will affect Russia’s decision to invite the Taliban.

Truce rejected

The Taliban this week rejected a government offer of a three-month ceasefire and said they would press on with their war, two commanders of the group told Reuters news agency, after a series of attacks, including a prolonged assault on a key city of Ghazni, in which hundreds of people have been killed.

Afghanistan’s ambassador to Russia, Abdul Qayyum Kochai, said earlier this week that “Russia wants to use the Taliban against [ISIL],” according to comments carried by the Russia-focused Interfax news agency.

Lavrov brushed aside such speculation, saying it would be “hypocritical” for “Russia to use the Taliban movement for the fight against [ISIL]”.

This year, Moscow rejected an accusation by NATO’s top commander in Afghanistan that it had been supporting and even supplying weapons to the Taliban. The group is fighting to remove US and other foreign forces and defeat Afghanistan’s Western-backed government.

Mohammad Hanif Atmar, Afghanistan’s national security adviser, meanwhile told Alexander Mantytski, Russia’s ambassador, that Kabul appreciated Moscow’s support for the peace process and called upon it “to put pressure on the Taliban to begin negotiations with the Afghan government”, the Afghan official’s office said earlier on Wednesday.

Mantytski said Moscow was ready to help Afghanistan make “the peace process a success”, Atmar’s office said but did not clarify how it could achieve that.

Image to improve

A Western diplomat in Kabul said Russia was seeking to increase its influence and improve its image in Afghanistan by inviting Taliban leaders for talks.

It comes nearly 40 years since Moscow sent its troops into Afghanistan, beginning a bloody decade-long occupation and factional conflict which is still going on.

According to a senior diplomat in Kabul, Moscow in recent months has stepped up direct contacts with the Taliban, which is formally banned in Russia.

Back-channel diplomacy between the Taliban and a range of countries – including the US, Turkey and Saudi Arabia – has taken place over the years to end the latest phase of Afghanistan’s decades of war, which began with a US invasion in 2001.

La Liga captains to meet over ‘concern’ for US game

news image

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos was among those to attend Wednesday’s meeting

Footballers in Spain have not ruled out strike action over a plan to stage a top-flight league match in the United States, says the players’ union.

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos and Barcelona vice-captain Sergio Busquets were among the high-profile players to attend a meeting on Wednesday to discuss their “concern” over the issue.

La Liga agreed a 15-year deal with US media company Relevent on Friday.

The players’ union – the AFE – says its members were not consulted by La Liga.

Players from all of the La Liga sides met in Madrid on Wednesday to discuss the issue with AFE president David Aganzo.

Among those in attendance were Ramos and Real Madrid team-mate Nacho, Barcelona duo Busquets and Sergi Roberto, Leo Baptistao from Espanyol, Bruno from Villarreal, and Atletico Madrid players Koke and Juanfran.

Aganzo said: “The problem is the lack of common sense, a schedule where only the export of soccer benefits – nobody counts on the fans.

“We need to fix it with the bosses. The captains are outraged, they’re against it, they are unanimous.

“It does not make sense. We are talking about an agreement that has a validity of 15 years without consulting the players.”

On the possibility of strike action, he added: “We will try not to reach that extreme but we are willing to go to the end if necessary.”

Aganzo said the players would meet again in September.

Asked last week when the US-based match would take place, and whether it would be a regular fixture, La Liga told BBC Sport it “cannot confirm the teams, match, date or season”.

The AFE said players “do not understand the unilateral decisions”, adding: “La Liga is distancing the fans of the players, something that harms the show and the essence of football.”

President Trump: Cohen payments to women weren’t illegal because they ‘came from me’

news image

President Donald Trump told the Fox News Channel that Michael Cohen’s payments to two women who alleged affairs with Trump were not illegal because they “came from me” and not his campaign.

“They weren’t taken out of campaign finance, that’s the big thing,” Trump said during an interview on FOX & Friends that will air Thursday morning. “That’s a much bigger thing.  Did they come out of the campaign? They didn’t come out of the campaign; they came from me.”

Cohen, who is Trump’s former attorney and personal fixer, told a federal court on Tuesday that he had paid off two women to silence them before the 2016 election at Trump’s “direction,” and admitted that the payments were illegal.

But Trump told Fox that the payments weren’t a campaign violation since they came from his personal funds.

“In fact, my first question when I heard about it was did they come out of the campaign because that could be a little dicey,” Trump said. “And they didn’t come out of the campaign and that’s big. But they weren’t – that’s not a – it’s not even a campaign violation.”

Trump said he didn’t know about the payments until after Cohen made them. Asked by interviewer Ainsley Earhardt if he knew about them, Trump responded: “Later on I knew. Later on.”

That contradicts Cohen’s statement to the court that he had acted at Trump’s direction when Trump was a candidate for president in 2016. It also contradicts audio tapes secretly recorded by Cohen that allegedly reveal Cohen and Trump talking about purchasing the rights to the story of a former Playboy model who alleges she had an affair with Trump.

Trump has made contradictory statements about the payments in the past.

MoreDid Michael Cohen lie to Congress?

In April, he told reporters aboard Air Force One that he knew nothing about $130,000 paid to porn star Stormy Daniels. In May, the president changed his story, acknowledging the payment to Daniels but saying that a non-disclosure agreement was “used to stop the false and extortionist accusations made by her about an affair.”

“These agreements are very common among celebrities and people of wealth,” Trump tweeted on May 3.

In the Fox interview, Trump also invoked an alleged campaign violation by former President Barack Obama.

CLOSE

Speaking at a rally in West Virginia hours after back-to-back legal blows in cases stemming from Robert Mueller’s investigation, President Donald Trump insisted his campaign did not collude with Russia.
Wochit

“If you look at President Obama, he had a massive campaign violation but he had a different attorney general and they viewed it a lot differently,” Trump said.

Trump is apparently referring to a civil violation by the Obama campaign, as opposed to the criminal violations that Cohen pleaded guilty to committing.

In 2008, Obama’s campaign paid a whopping $375,000 fine for failing to report certain campaign contributions within 48 hours as required by federal election law.
