Holiday travelers scramble to get home ahead of winter storm, blizzard conditions in Midwest

news image

A major winter storm moving across the country’s northern tier Saturday night is expected to bring heavy snow and strong winds from the Rockies to the Central Plains and into the Great Lakes, creating headaches on major highways and at key airports for holiday travelers heading home.

The National Weather Service says the storm could produce blizzard conditions, especially in the hardest-hit areas.

“Dangerous travel conditions caused by heavy snow and reduced visibility are expected to end the holiday weekend,” according to the NWS.

Strong winds and heavy snow are likely in Chicago Sunday afternoon, raising prospects of flight delays and cancellations at O’Hare International Airport, a major hub. Airlines delays in or out of Chicago would, in turn, also have a ripple affect throughout the nationwide system.

More: Snow! Airlines waive change fees for post-Thanksgiving storm

“The combination of extra moisture from Lake Michigan, colder air and strong winds may lead to whiteout conditions and a rapid accumulation of snow in Chicago during the second half of the storm,” according to AccuWeather Meteorologist Steve Travis.

Heavy snow could also create delays for travelers into and out of airports in Detroit, Cleveland and Pittsburgh.

Forecasters are warning of likely near-blizzard conditions on Sunday from Topeka, Kansas, and Omaha, Nebraska, to Des Moines, Iowa, and Madison, Wisconsin. From 3 to 6 inches of snow is likely from northern Kansas to Michigan.

The fast-moving storm is also expected to drop snow on parts of upstate New York and  Northern New England into Monday.

As the storm works its way across the northern states, it is expected to dip down into the Mid-Atlantic Saturday, raising the chance of light freezing rain over the central Appalachians.

The National Weather Center expects a surface low in the Carolinas to trek northward across the Mid-Atlantic Saturday evening, hugging the New England coast on Sunday morning and bringing heavy rainfall.

USA TODAY exclusive: Inside Celebrity Cruises’ groundbreaking new ship, Celebrity Edge

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida – What’s it like on Celebrity Edge, the much-awaited new ship from Celebrity Cruises? See for yourself with a scroll through the carousel on this page, which offers the first look at the soon-to-debut, 2,918-passenger vessel in advance of its first voyage with paying passengers.

USA TODAY Cruise has been getting an exclusive sneak peek at Edge this weekend at Fort Lauderdale’s Port Everglades, and we’re posting photos here and at the USA TODAY Cruise Twitter page.

Edge is the prototype for an innovative new series of ships at Celebrity called the Edge Class. Designed using 3D imaging technology, the vessel features cabins that are open to the sea in a way that has never been seen before in ocean cruising. It also boasts public spaces designed by some of the world’s best-known architects and designers, including Patricia Urquiola and Kelly Hoppen.

RELATED:  New Celebrity Cruises ship takes to the water

More than 60 percent of Edge’s 1,467 cabins are what Celebrity is calling Infinite Verandas. In what is billed as a first for an ocean-going vessel, the cabins have balconies that are incorporated into the main cabin area. Bi-fold doors in the rooms either can be completely closed, creating a traditional room area separated from a balcony area, or left open, creating a wide-open indoor space that is about 23 percent larger than traditional balcony cabins.

Among Edge’s other notable features: A 90-ton platform the size of a tennis court that is cantilevered over its side. Called the Magic Carpet, it moves up and down the side of the ship serving functions that range from a tender boarding platform (when it’s positioned alongside Deck 2) to a restaurant (when it’s positioned near the top of the vessel).

Edge is the first of four Edge Class vessels that Celebrity has ordered for delivery by 2022.

Edge arrived at Florida’s Port Everglades, in the Fort Lauderdale area, on Monday after a 15-night journey from the shipyard in France where it had been under construction for more than a year. It’s schedule to sail its first cruise with paying passengers on Saturday and be christened in early December.

Edge initially will sail to the Caribbean out of Port Everglades before moving to the Mediterranean for summer 2019.

In the Caribbean, the ship will operate seven-night trips starting at $1,049. In the Mediterranean, it’ll mostly offer 10- and 11-night voyages starting at $1,899.

NASA’s InSight will parachute down to Mars Monday for dramatic landing

news image

NASA’s InSight lander has been hurtling through the solar system for over seven months. Now its time has come.

InSight is set to land on Mars.

InSight — sent to observe Martian earthquakes and study the planet’s ancient interior — is expected to land in a flat, barren plain on Mars on Monday at around 3 p.m. ET.

Plummeting down to Mars is always perilous, so NASA mission controllers — and InSight’s adoring public — will anxiously await the landing results back on Earth.

An artist's conception of the Mars' InSight lander.

An artist’s conception of the Mars’ InSight lander.

NASA’s choice of landing site, called Elysium Planitia, will give the stationary lander a flat place to deploy its seismometers and drill into the frozen ground.

Located some 370 mile from where the Curiosity rover landed six years ago, these plains lie near the equator, affording the probe ample sunlight, and power.

Following a suspenseful landing

On landing day, NASA will provide a live feed of its mission control room as InSight falls through the thin Martian atmosphere.

Live commentary can be watched beginning at 2 p.m. ET. About 2 hours after the landing, at 5 p.m., NASA will provide a landing debrief, perhaps with InSight’s first images. (You can watch all of the action live in the window below.)

For six long minutes, NASA engineers will monitor InSight while the lander plunges through the Martian atmosphere. Landing information will be relayed from millions of miles away back to Earth by two suitcase-sized cubesats and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

InSight will begin plummeting through the atmosphere at 12,300 mph.

A thick heat shield will guard the probe from not just scorching temperatures as friction builds on the surface, but the potential of “sandblasting” by dust and sand in the Martian sky.

An artist's conception of the protected InSight lander plummeting through the Martian atmosphere.

At the right time, the probe will ditch the heavy heat shield, release a parachute, and extend its three legs, in preparation to land.

When the lander is near the ground, it will then separate from the parachute and fire 12 engines at the ground, allowing for a controlled, gentle touchdown on the surface.

In short, NASA may have a lot of experience landing robots on Mars, but many things have to unfold almost perfectly over the course of around six minutes to get InSight to the rusty ground safely.

As recently as 2016, a European Space Agency probe — the ExoMars Schiaparelli module — slammed into the Martian ground after an onboard computer mishap, scattering the expensive machine over the red desert floor.

If all goes as planned for InSight, the lander will settle down Monday afternoon, and soon after, begin collecting information about the planet’s activity, internal temperature, and ancient past.

European Union approves Brexit deal with Britain

news image

Associated Press
Published 5:03 a.m. ET Nov. 25, 2018

LONDON — European Union approves divorce deal with Britain, setting out withdrawal terms, framework for future relations.

In a bittersweet landmark, European Union leaders gathered Sunday to seal an agreement on Britain’s departure next year — the first time a member country will have left the 28-nation bloc.

At a summit in Brussels, the leaders endoresed a withdrawal agreement that would settle Britain’s divorce bill, protect the rights of U.K. and EU citizens hit by Brexit and keep the Irish border open. They will also rubber-stamp a 26-page document laying out their aims for future relations after Britain leaves at midnight Brussels time on March 29.

British Prime Minister Theresa May hailed the deal as the start of a new chapter for Britain, but European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said the U.K.’s departure was a tragedy.

“It’s a sad day,” Juncker said as he arrived.

He told reporters that deal was “the best possible,” but the summit “is neither a time of jubilation nor of celebration. It’s a sad moment, and it’s a tragedy.”

EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier said now that the first phase was done, Britain and the EU needed to work for “an ambitious and unprecedented partnership.”

“Now is the time for everybody to take their responsibility — everybody,” he said.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said the deal — the product of a year and a half of often grueling negotiations between Britain and the EU — was regrettable, but acceptable.

“I believe that nobody is winning. We are all losing because of the U.K. leaving,” Rutte said. “But given that context, this is a balanced outcome with no political winners.”

The deal must still be ratified by the European Parliament, something parliament President Antonio Tajani said was likely in January.

More dauntingly for May, it also needs approval from Britain’s Parliament.

May is under intense pressure from pro-Brexit and pro-EU British lawmakers, with large numbers on both sides of the debate opposing the divorce deal and threatening to vote it down when it comes to the House of Commons next month. Brexiteers think it will leave the U.K. tied too closely to EU rules, while pro-Europeans say it will erect new barriers between Britain and the bloc — its neighbor and biggest trading partner.

May insists her deal delivers on the things that matter most to pro-Brexit voters — control of budgets, immigration policy and laws — while retaining close ties to the U.K.’s European neighbors.

CLOSE

She plans to spend the next couple of weeks selling it to politicians and the British public before Parliament’s vote in December.

In a “letter to the nation” released Sunday, May said she would be “campaigning with my heart and soul to win that vote and to deliver this Brexit deal, for the good of our United Kingdom and all of our people.”

“It will be a deal that is in our national interest – one that works for our whole country and all of our people, whether you voted ‘Leave’ or ‘Remain,’” she said.

She said Britain’s departure from the EU “must mark the point when we put aside the labels of ‘Leave’ and ‘Remain’ for good and we come together again as one people.”

“To do that we need to get on with Brexit now by getting behind this deal.”

LSU, Texas A&M play seven-overtime game for the ages as Aggies hold on for 74-72 victory

news image

It was Saturday night when LSU doused coach Ed Orgeron with Gatorade, and Sunday morning when the Tigers lost, seven overtimes and a combined 91 points later.

Texas A&M 74, LSU 72 — in football, not basketball, and you knew it would take LSU’s mediocre offense all of seven overtimes to get there. The game was so long … well, how long was it? Well, Texas A&M was in the Big 12 Conference when the game started. It was so long … it’s a good thing the Aggies aren’t paying Jimbo Fisher by the hour.

It was 31-24 with just seconds left when the Tigers dropped a few dozen gallons of sugar on Orgeron’s head, and LSU’s head coach wore the sticky liquid for the next hour-plus as a reminder of how close his team came to locking down a spot in a New Year’s Six bowl. But A&M quarterback Kellen Mond tossed a 19-yard touchdown strike as time expired to force overtime. And then …

An LSU field goal to make it 34-31. A&M ties it, 34-34. Second overtime. Mond’s touchdown run. LSU touchdown run. Third overtime. LSU quarterback Joe Burrow throws a touchdown and the Tigers notch the two-point conversion. A&M answers to make it 49-49. LSU fans ask each other: Excuse me, what happened here?

Matching field goals to knot the score at 52-52. Water break. The fifth overtime began with a trick play: Orgeron and LSU dialed up the halfback pass to make it 58-52 but miss on the conversion. Don’t worry — A&M obliged by scoring a touchdown but missing on the two-point try. It was 66-58, then 66-66. LSU opened the seventh and final overtime with a touchdown, making it 72-66. Mond would then throw another touchdown pass, his fourth in overtime play and sixth overall, to tie the game at 72-72. Mond would then find receiver Kendrick Rogers for the game-winning conversion. The final: 74-72.

It’s the highest-scoring game in Football Bowl Subdivision history at 146 points, shattering the previous record of 139 points set in Western Michigan’s 71-68 win against Buffalo a year ago, also in overtime. LSU’s 72 points are the most ever scored in a losing effort. The Tigers had scored a combined 79 points in their previous four SEC games.

It’s college football, and it’s the SEC, and it’s refereeing, and it’s seven overtimes, so you knew there was going to be controversy. LSU had issues with two calls in particular, both in the final seconds of the Aggies’ game-tying drive to end regulation.

On one, LSU believed it had intercepted Mond to seal the win, only to have referees review the play and call that Mond’s knee had been on the turf when he received a low snap, ending the play. And after Mond spiked the ball after converting a long fourth down, a review ruled that there was still one second on the clock. LSU players who had just given Orgeron a Gatorade shower had to return to the field for another play. It was a touchdown, A&M, and we were headed for overtime.

These nine NBA players are quietly balling this season

news image

You know the big names who are dominating this season.

Players like LeBron JamesKevin DurantStephen CurryRussell Westbrook and James Harden are all posting monster campaigns, just as they have done annually for a very long time.

But it’s the other guys we’re here to discuss – the lesser-known players who are posting big numbers in their own right, and helping lead various teams to surprising seasons thus far in 2018-19.

Below, HoopsHype breaks down nine players who are quietly playing great almost a quarter of the way into the year.

DOMANTAS SABONIS, INDIANA PACERS

With the way he’s playing, it’s almost like Indiana Pacers big man Domantas Sabonis came into the season with the goal to not miss anymore. And so far, he’s succeeding.

Sabonis, despite coming off the bench every game so far this year, is playing, by far, the best basketball of his career. The Gonzaga product is averaging 14.2 points, 9.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists per contest in just 24.5 minutes nightly, shooting an incredible 69.6 percent from the floor. Sabonis has only attempted five three-pointers on the season, but guess what? He’s nailed four of those, too.

Among players seeing over 20 minutes of action nightly, Sabonis’ field-goal percentage ranks first overall, just ahead of Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert. Additionally, Sabonis is producing 1.25 points per post-up possession, the second-best rate among men with at least 30 such opportunities.

Simply put, Sabonis’ production this season has been downright awesome, and if he were getting starters’ minutes, his numbers would get even scarier. Regardless, in his role as a reserve, Sabonis has been outstanding for Nate McMillan’s men.

MONTREZL HARRELL, LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS

Speaking of big men dominating off the bench, Los Angeles Clippers backup center Montrezl Harrell is, like Sabonis, absolutely killing it in his reserve role.

Thus far this season, Harrell is putting up 15.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.1 steals and 1.8 blocks per contest, while successfully converting 66.9 percent of his field-goal attempts on the year. Only three other players can match the former Louisville Cardinal’s total points (264), assists (26) and blocks (30) in 2018-19, and they’re all star-level talents that go by the names of Karl-Anthony Towns, Joel Embiid and Anthony Davis.

That’s decent company for the Clippers big man, proving how wildly productive he’s been this year.

As if that wasn’t enough, we should also note Harrell ranks second in points per possession (PPP) as the pick-and-roll roll man this year, per Synergy Sports. His 1.54 PPP on those looks only trails Gobert, a former All-NBA big man.

DE’AARON FOX, SACRAMENTO KINGS

The 2017 draft’s No. 5 overall pick, De’Aaron Fox is justifying his lofty draft status with his play in his sophomore year.

The Kentucky product is averaging 18.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 7.7 assists per game, shooting 48.7 percent from the floor and, even more impressively, 39.7 percent from three. Formerly considered a weakness of his, the fact that Fox can pull up into three-point attempts and confidently knock them down at an efficient rate has helped him turn the corner in his age-21 season, running the point at close to an elite level.

We’ll see if it’s sustainable, but, at the moment, Fox is one of just four players putting up a 18/4/7 stat-line on the year, sharing the distinction with Westbrook, Harden and Jrue Holiday.

Fox has been playing so well, in fact, that the Sacramento Kings presently boast a surprising 10-8 record, which has them tied for ninth in the loaded Western Conference.

It hasn’t just been a one-man show in Sacramento, though…

BUDDY HIELD, SACRAMENTO KINGS

…because Kings wing Buddy Hield is also having a quietly fantastic year.

The former Oklahoma Sooners star is putting up 18.7 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game, providing excellent spacing for this upstart Sacramento squad. Among players with at least 90 three-point attempts this year, the sharpshooting Hield’s 44.1 percent accuracy from deep ranks third league-wide, trailing just some guy named Curry, as well as Brooklyn Nets 2-guard Joe Harris.

With numbers that impressive, it shouldn’t come as a surprise Hield boasts a +7.8 swing rating (the difference between a team’s net rating with a player on the floor versus when he sits), which shows just how vital he is to the Kings’ early success in 2018-19.

Like Fox, we’ll have to wait and see how sustainable Hield’s play is, but for now, the duo look like vital building block for Sacramento’s suddenly bright future.

JUSUF NURKIC, PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS

After a relatively up-and-down year in 2017-18, Jusuf Nurkic has bounced back wonderfully thus far this season.

The Bosnian big man is averaging 15.3 points, 10.7 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.2 blocks per game, marks that can only be matched by six other players, most of whom are big-name stars. Furthermore, Nurkic has an absurd +11.9 swing rating, proving that his production this season has been anything but empty.

The Portland Trail Blazers re-signed Nurkic to a four-year, $48 million deal this past offseason, and by the look of it so far, it would appear Portland has locked up their center of the future at an extremely team-friendly price.

We’ll see how Nurkic continues to play, but at the moment, that contract is looking like a steal, especially by the modern NBA’s standards.

NIKOLA VUCEVIC, ORLANDO MAGIC

Nurkic isn’t the only European center putting up a subtly great season thus far in 2018-19, though. The Orlando Magic’s Nikola Vucevic also deserves to be talked about.

Vucevic’s numbers this year – 20.0 points, 11.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.1 steals, 1.1 blocks and 1.1 three-pointers nightly – have been straight-up monstrous. And his +11.6 swing rating is one of the best marks in the league, exemplifying his importance to the surprisingly 9-9 Magic this season.

The NBA of today may not be kind to traditional, semi-slow-footed big men like Vucevic, but his game has become so well-rounded that it doesn’t matter. Not only does he space the floor well (Vucevic is shooting 42.2 percent from three through 18 contests), he also dominates smaller lineups thanks to his rebounding prowess. Vucevic’s 1.59 PPP on put-backs is the best mark league-wide among guys with at least 20 such opportunities.

Needless to say, if Vucevic keeps this up, he could be looking at his first All-Star bid this season – he’s been that good.

D’ANGELO RUSSELL, BROOKLYN NETS

Early last year, it looked like Brooklyn Nets guard D’Angelo Russell had turned the corner. Then he hurt his knee and was never able to recover that form.

Now, it would appear that awesome version of Russell is back.

After 19 games, Russell is averaging 17.4 points, 5.4 assists and 2.5 three-pointers per outing, knocking down an impressive 38.4 percent of his looks from deep, many of which came of the pull-up or step-back variety. Russell is also putting up career-best marks across the board in various advanced metrics, including Box Plus/Minus, Player Efficiency Rating and Win Shares/48.

If he can maintain this productive (and relatively efficient) level of play, he could be headed to a nice payday this offseason, in what’s going to be his first taste of free agency.

PASCAL SIAKAM, TORONTO RAPTORS

The long-striding, pogo-stick of a big man Pascal Siakam was an important, impactful piece of what was the best bench in the league in 2017-18. And thus far this year, after a promotion to the starting five, he’s been even better.

The third-year forward is putting up 14.2 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game while sinking 61.9 percent of his field-goal attempts – a truly astounding mark for a player who predominantly spends most of his time on the wing.

Siakam’s got a really unique game, with a tight ball-handle, quick spin moves and newly developed pull-up shooting touch to go with his freakish length and athleticism. And it’s thanks to all of those distinctive traits that Siakam is able to do a bit of everything on the floor. As proof, we can point to the fact that Synergy rates him as “excellent” in four completely distinct play-types: transition scoring, isolation scoring, posting up and as the pick-and-roll ball-handler. In addition, his swing rating (a ridiculous +16.6) is one of the top marks in the NBA among rotational players.

Siakam is still two years away from hitting free agency, but if he continues on this trajectory, he’s going to get absolutely paid once he does hit the open market.

E’TWAUN MOORE, NEW ORLEANS PELICANS

It’s not exactly typical that a role player in his eighth year posts a career campaign, but that’s exactly what New Orleans Pelicans wing E’Twaun Moore is doing thus far this season.

The veteran 2-guard is putting up career-highs across the board, including points (16.9), three-pointers (1.8) and three-point percentage (48.5).

Among players with at least 60 three-point attempts this year, Moore ranks fourth in accuracy. And when shooting off-screens, Moore’s 1.37 PPP is the second-best mark in the NBA among qualified players.

With stars like Davis and Holiday taking most of the attention from opposing defenses, Moore has done an outstanding job in complementing the team’s best players by knocking down shots at an elite rate off the ball.

The Pelicans are going to be in the thick of a heated playoff race out West all season, and the difference between making it or going on vacation early will come down to role players like Moore making a legit nightly impact, just like he has been to this point in the year.
